Presenting this stunning, 1964 Triumph TR4 In Outstanding Condition With NO RESERVE PRICE!!! Featuring: · Original California Black Plate Car · Lovingly Restored both Mechanically and Cosmetically · New Convertible Top & Frame · Wire Wheels W/Chrome Knock-Offs · New Suspension · Lots of Spare Parts · Original Triumph TR4 Owner’s Handbook · Much More! Look at the detailed photos of this car (please allow time for all 95 photos to load) and you’ll feel as though you were transported back in time to the 1960’s, viewing a brand new, Triumph TR4 on the showroom floor. Go ahead…scroll down and see for yourself… With continued care, owning this car will make you feel that way every time you see and drive it. Code named "Zest" during development, the TR4 evolved from the TR3 with a more powerful 2138cc engine, synchromesh transmission and rack & pinion steering. Its wider, Michelotti styled body with roll-up windows has a more rugged, "hairy-chested" image than its tamer predecessor. Over forty years since the last TR4 left Standard Triumph in Coventry, England, finding a wonderfully restored example is a rare occurrence, indeed. This TR4 has certainly led a charmed life. Owned by a mature gentleman in Sunny, Southern California, he was a 30+ year member of SCTOA (Southern CA Triumph Owners Assoc.) and (evidently) well versed in the repairing and restoration of these fine automobiles. Possibly unaware that his retirement project would consume much of the remaining years of his life and become the final expression of his passion for these cars; he was fortunately able to see and enjoy its completion before passing away last year. Although the car represented a wonderful memento from her late husband (and a lovely showpiece in her garage), his surviving wife never learned to drive a “stick” and soon realized it would be best to find a new owner for this fine “4”. Upon contacting the president the local Triumph club, (SCTOA) she was referred to us for the purpose of listing the car here on eBay Motors for the first time with No Reserve. Please note: · We are not making warranties as to the car’s fitness or originality. · We’ve simply photographed and described it to the best of our ability. · Pre-bid inspections are encouraged. Post bid inspections ARE NOT! · Please respect eBay’s rules for the auction’s stability! Let's have a closer look now. Exterior: Nicely refinished in Wedgewood Blue (Triumph color code 5814) with new top, sparkling chrome and wire wheels, the Roadster for auction here is the epitome of Britishness: it oozes character. After almost a half century on the road, the immaculate body, undercarriage and trim speak volumes about the loving restoration this TR received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. The optional wire wheels painted in matte silver with chrome spinners are wonderfully preserved with newer, factory correct tires. They look spectacular and lend the car that incomparable British charisma. Wire wheels are certainly the most appreciated option today on almost any period sports car. There are no major blems, just a few minor cosmetic issues: A magnet may detect a little body filler here and there. And a few small, chips, scuffs & scratches may be seen with a magnifying glass. Most importantly, body, frame, sills and floorboards are SOLID and there is absolutely NO evidence of major collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. Let’s take a look underneath: Equally pleasant to observe is the TR's rust-free undercarriage. All the sheet metal and frame are dry and healthy, without any signs of cancer or rot anywhere. If you know just how rust-prone these completely unprotected TRs are, you will highly appreciate this marvelous specimen! Lots of work has been completed down here. That transmission looks (and shifts) like brand new. Frame rails are straight, no rust on those factory original pans… …suspension looks rebuilt, bushings and brake lines replaced, etc. etc… No rust can be found here in the sills or fenders. In fact, with a little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? There is no substitute for originality, and this “4” proves the point. Completely reupholstered, the black bucket seats and door panels with white piping all look great; as does the cut pile carpeting, (no rust below!) wood dash and full instrumentation. A true British Roadster must have a wooden dashboard, and the TR4 is no exception. Looking at the fascinating array of beautifully preserved JAEGER gauges with perfect silk screening of the instrument dials, one is transported back in time. The tactile pleasures are markedly increased by the knowledge that everything actually works… An upgraded stereo system with power amp in the trunk guarantees pleasurable audio, even when traveling topless at speeds well above the double nickel. The carpeted trunk is surprisingly large and very clean. Some very useful spare parts are shown. Matching wheel with original tire and original jacking equipment resides in a separate compartment below a carpeted wooden partition. A typical TR4 weak spot would be the trunk floor. Out of sight and deeply recessed, it is usually the first place where corrosion develops. Things are different here! Not the tiniest rust bubble is to be found; the paint inside is still 100% factory original. A picture says more than a thousand words: this--all original--trunk is clean! Finally, a brand new convertible top and frame were recently installed. It fits tight as a drum with no leaks or wind noises. In short, everything looks and operates as if the car was delivered yesterday, not 47 years ago. Engine & Mechanical: This TR’s engine compartment is all original, factory-correct, down to the decals and markings. Originality abounds. This appears to be a numbers matching Triumph, featuring its factory-installed engine and all the original ancillaries. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic and the car always runs cool. The TR4 is powered by a rock-solid, 2138cc pushrod engine that has earned its reputation of being unbreakable. The 4-cylinder power plant inhales through dual SU carburetors. It sounds crisp and runs smoothly with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. It may come as a revelation to many, but all you ever need to keep this strong 4-banger going is a screw-driver, a hammer, a set of pliers, and maybe a little wire. For anybody who's paying his own bills, it surely provides peace of mind to know there are no black boxes, injectors, electronics, and fancy stuff like that. The TR4 is a minimalist car designed to deliver maximum fun! Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems: Over the recent years, hoses, belts and switches have been replaced, brakes, brake lines, master and slave cylinders, front & rear bushings, tie rod ends, clutch, pilot bearing, clutch master & slave cylinders and starter have been changed, carburetor was tuned, plugs renewed and battery replaced. Yes, any TR4 can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! As evidenced by the photos and our driving impressions, it appears no wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this TR4 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Speaking of cosmetics, let us stress how immaculate the body is, how perfect the bumpers, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 4-year-old, not a 47-year-old car. This one is that clean! Drivability: Invigorating is the word that best describes this TR4 experience. This Roadster begs to be driven! Set the choke, turn the key and the motor comes to life almost instantly. A healthy exhaust note alerts the senses. Select first gear, release the clutch, and off you go. Though nearly 50 years old, this TR4 still maneuvers comfortably in today's bustling traffic. The wind-in-the-hair fun quotient is tremendous, to say the least! Dogs bark, kids point, and girls swoon wherever you go, and a brisk drive in the Roadster is not only a feast for all senses, but also instant relaxation for the mind. You feel what you drive. It's almost as if you are a part of the machine. In any climate, the powerful 4-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 55 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 70 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Throwing this TR through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The fully synchronized, 4-speed transmission shifts very smooth and precise. The fresh disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Aided by newer suspension and radial tires, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Triumph is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! In fact, this TR’s steering makes a mockery of the rubberized, over-assisted control mechanisms that pass for most modern cars' guidance systems. The chassis inspires with its unsophisticated charm; its transparency is convincing. Everything works on this TR, from the lights and switches to the heater fan. Despite its age, the car definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Pound for pound, the TR4 is one of the finest, most fun post-war British sports cars. Being a highly collectible Classic with fantastic appreciation potential, this one can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To make things even better, reasonably priced spares and affordable, classic car insurance are readily available. Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the Triumph. This Triumph TR4 however is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise!
