Vehicle Detail
1972 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible This is a fine example of what a 1972 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 convertible looked like when it came from the factory 39 years ago. If you always wanted one back in high school here is your opportunity to treat yourself to a sweet Christmas present. I feel confident when I say that Santa would much rather fly back to the North Pole in a red 442 than in some sleigh with reindeer and a red nose. Santa says here is the Oldsmobile that you have been saving up for to fill with the gas card you're going to receive at Christmas! According to the Olds Faqs website 1971 was the last year that the 442 came as a separate model, and there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. The 442 was an option, so whether it was ordered as a 442, or from a local dealer, or a private owner installed all the 442 options they are all Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 442's from 1972 have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door. This very nice example was made to look like the Oldsmobile 442 W-30 model with a big block 455, which would have an X in the vin number if it were a true W-30 car. If you check the vin number listed above you can clearly see that there is no X. This is the original numbers matching Rocket engine. I checked the numbers myself. Prior to 1972 the vin numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine if a car was ordered from the factory with the 442 option. In 1972 you can only verify engine size and matching numbers in the vin number, but I assure you the numbers do match. The last several numbers of the vin number appear on the block. Personally numbers never really mattered to me, but it truly does look like most of the other components on this car do match. The most important numbers to match are on the block, so those are the only numbers I know how to check. I never learned how to check any other items. I suggest if numbers do matter to you on the other parts, that you make an appointment to come and visually inspect the car for yourself. The mileage is correct at 105807, and the engine was completely re-built less than 2,000 miles ago. Therefore, you should have many many years of fun with the top down cruising. This car was recently painted red with the white stripes to make it appear as the awesome W-30 model you see in the pictures. It has the W-25 forced ram-air induction dual snorkel hood. The primary and secondary hood locking mechanisms are in place and functional. The chrome twist downs are lined up just right for easy opening. I tried to show how nice the hood and fenders line up in the pictures. This car also has the D35 dual sports-styled outside mirrors with the drivers side being remote controlled. It has the D55 sports console, N34 custom sport steering wheel, JL2 power front disc brakes, and the W35 rear deck lid whale tail spoiler. There are four nice raised white lettered hard to find period correct B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A tires with P235 70R/14's in the front, and P245 60/14's in the rear on N66 Super Stock II wheels. All 5 wheels are painted to match the color of the car with bolt on centers, and beauty trim rings. There is a full size matching Super Stock II spare tire in a nicely detailed trunk with the original jack. The rubber gasket was replaced around the inside of the trunk. The chrome is in nice condition all around the car with the cut-out rear bumper. The dual exhaust is music to your ears with the factory trumpet chrome exhaust tips. The engine compartment was beautifully detailed with all the little things that are usually missing on these cars after all these years. I tried to replace all the proper decals to make this Oldsmobile appear factory correct. There is a brand new white convertible top with new back glass, and a new well liner. This top goes up and down very fast, and it fits like a glove. The sound system has been upgraded to an AM/FM cassette player in the dash, but the dash was never cut up and appears in very nice condition. I am enclosing the original AM radio in the auction for those of you who are concerned with keeping that factory appearance. The interior is in good driver quality condition as you can see from the pictures, but the next owner may want to recover the bucket seats to make them perfect. I keep some aftermarket covers on the bucket seats not shown in the pictures, because they are more comfortable. The carpet was replaced prior to my ownership and shows very well. The passenger sun visor still has the original vanity mirror in very nice condition. Typically these clocks never work, but this one still works fine and seems to hold precise time. Thus allowing you to know when 4:42 time arrives exactly. Whether AM or PM that has always been the best time of the day for me. Normally the ash tray door always falls down, but this one still flips up and stays in place. The turn signals all work, and all four emergency flashers. All four headlights and bright lights work well. The heat cranks in this car, but only works on high. This car has air conditioning and is still hooked up on the original R-12 system, but I have never attempted to charge. The oil was just changed, and the car was tuned up within the past month with a new air cleaner, distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, and wires. Installed were Made in the U.S.A. Taylor Spiro Pro hi-performance 8mm silicone wires for maximum spark. All three fan, alternator, and air conditioning belts were replaced at that time. A new fuel pump was installed this past fall, and the battery was replaced with a new one in June of 2010. I purchased this car with a very solid body back in 1999 from an awesome Chicago Police officer. I could tell that he took very good care of it. This sweet car was the main reason he won over his wife when they first started dating. I heard she didn't talk to him for several weeks after he sold it to me. I occasionally stay in touch with him since he still lives only blocks away from my sister. I continue to keep this car garage kept, and it currently sits in my garage awaiting its new owner. It is possible for you to obtain a new wife with these new wheels. Everywhere you drive people can't help but be attracted to you like a magnet. You must be able to handle being the center of attention. This car has many classic memories left to make! It came with the original 1972 owners manual, consumer information, and the emission control systems manual that will be included. These cars are getting harder and harder to come across, so here is your opportunity to pick up a sweet car at a nominal price. I attended the Barrett-Jackson auction in West Palm Beach Florida back in April of 2009 with one of my close friends. He sold his 1971 black with white striped 442 W-30 convertible replica for $86,000. Two hours prior to his car rolling on the auction block was an authentic 442 W-30 painted the same color combination as this car. That car sold for $173,250, and I show one of the 24 pictures of the Greenlight collectible Die-cast car that was modeled after that sale. Why spend over $100,000 at a Barrett-Jackson auction when you can have the same look for far less than a quarter of that price? What you see is what you get! No one ever has to know that you don't have a W-30. If you've ever driven one of these cars you know exactly how truly wonderful they drive. I personally feel that there is no finer muscle car on the planet than a 1972 442 Convertible! It took a great deal of time, money, and effort to make this car into a W-30. My taxes have arrived, so this car will sell. Don't delay bid now and bid often! This auction ends on Sunday evening at 7pm, so make sure to get all your bids in before the Sunday Night Football game. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. If you feel that I may not have covered anything please feel free to ask. I will get back to you promptly. This car has incredible investment potential. You can think of it as a bank account that will continue to rise! This is a no reserve auction, so kindly only bid what you can afford!! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!
