Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL Affordable Luxury Here is an opportunity to own a rare luxury car without breaking the bank. The Mercedes- Benz 450 SEL was first introduced to the United States in 1977. The sticker price on this gem was $40,000 when the top of the line Cadillac could be had for less than half of that. As for the rarity of this car, there were only 437 imported in 1977, and for the entire run of the 450 SEL in the US (1977 – 1980), fewer than 2000 arrived. The vehicle we are selling is a well-maintained item with 160,583 miles. While there are no maintenance records with the car, its appearance indicates it has received excellent care. A car cover is included in the trunk and it was obviously used as the original paint is in very good condition. Horizontal surfaces of the hood, roof, and trunk show some weathering, but the paint on all other areas remains bright and shiny. The interior is also very good; the leather is excellent, with the exception of a small wear spot on the driver’s seat (see photo). In the back seat, the padding is thin or deteriorated, although it is still serviceable. Please note, the coloration of the seats is much more uniform than the pictures indicate due to use of flash for some pictures. There are no cracks in the vinyl dash or wood on the dash and console. All the wheels and tires match and there is an alloy wheel with a nearly new spare. The chrome bumpers and badges show very little aging and the glass is perfect, with all lenses intact, except for one fog lamp (see photo). The car drives well. The engine is smooth and strong; the automatic transmission shifts effortlessly and smoothly and the brakes are firm and sure. This car rides and handles exceptionally well for its age. The owner’s manual and other original documentation are with the car. Overall, this is an outstanding example of a top line luxury car from the past. It would serve as a unique daily driver or a rare addition to a collection. While the pictures offered and this description attempt to accurately portray the car, personal inspections are recommended and welcomed. This car is part of The Saratoga Automobile Museum’s donated car collection. The proceeds from the sale of our donated vehicles support the educational programs run by the Museum. By bidding and winning this item, you are not only getting a rare car, but you are helping educate young folks about the automobile and its place in the history of our country.
