Vehicle Detail

1967 Mercedes 250SL Automatic + Extras! This is a European version Mercedes 250SL (full glass headlights and turning lights) brought from Rome. It is equipped with an automatic transmission. I am the third owner of this car. For the last several years it has been stored (prepped for storage by the local import dealer) and covered. Prior to storage the car ran beautifully and was used regularly in good weather. It has 97,530 km (About 59,000 miles) and comes with the hard top and extras that include an original marketing brochure, a service manual, two car covers, a Mercedes shifter knob, and an original parts manual which I am told is worth several hundred dollar by it self. (I have included pictures of these items) I am not a car expert but have had a mechanic from the local Mercedes dealership look at the car. His assessment was that mechanically, the car is very good – the fluids obviously will need replacement from storage but that everything looked intact. From a body perspective he said the car was average to a little better but nice. He said it was a nice “driver” and could be restored. I have taken many pictures and have tried to describe the car as accurately as possible. I will also be happy to try and answer questions. The car has always been garage stored and covered. It has been maintained (prior to storage) by a local import car shop that works almost exclusively on Mercedes – including many older SL’s and vintage Mercedes in the area. (The owner is a former Mercedes dealership service manager – he is German.) Serial #: 113.043 – 12-002922 +250SL+ Color: Silver Exterior, Navy Blue Interior Body: As mentioned above, the local dealer said the body was about average. There is some “bubbling” of the paint over each of the rear tires (see the pictures) and some likely rust at the bottom of the rear panel behind the one of the wheels. The doors, hood, trunk, and front fenders all look to be in very good condition (no rust). There are some paint chips and few areas where the paint has “spidered” or is dull from age. I am told the floor panels and the trunk floor often rust – I have taken pictures of a front floor panel (see below) – they seem solid but have some surface pitting, the floor of the trunk has some surface discoloration that seems to be mostly from being under the trunk mat – it too, however, seems solid and most of the discoloring brushes off. All the doors, hood, trunk and convertible top work (there is only one set of the convertible top mechanisms that clamp down the top). The separate hardtop (see pictures) is in average to good condition with a light crème colored headliner. Interior: The interior is average to a little better – the seats are nice as is the wood trim. The carpet shows wear as would be expected for the age of the car. One of the silver plates that cover the convertible top mechanism is not attached but the part is with the car. The dash is nice as are the dials and steering wheel. The door panels have been replaced – as best I can tell with the appropriate parts and materials. I have not tried to start the car recently – the tires were good when originally stored – they could now use some air and do not appear to have any rot/cracks but again have been stored – moved only slightly for several years. I would rather someone check the car and fluids before trying to run it. In terms of the extras: The car comes with 2 covers – one expensive that locks – one light weight. It comes with a Mercedes service manual (blue cover – about 3 inches thick), an original marketing brochure for the 250SL (white cover about 8 -10 pages) and an original parts manual with hundreds of diagrams and every conceivable part number with very good illustrations as to how they all operate. (The Mercedes guy wanted to buy this from me – said it was valuable and relatively rare but agreed it made sense to keep it with the car). This car has been well cared for although stored recently and in areas shows its age. It is time for someone to own it who appreciates it more than I do and will use it. The car is sold “as is” (again I have described it as best I know how and will answer questions if I can). Please also note that the car is available for sale locally and if purchased, I will end the auction. Feel free to email with any questions and if appropriate or necessary we can exchange telephone numbers for a conversation. The buyer is responsible for arranging and paying for all pick up/shipping/insurance expenses. The car is located about 20 miles north of Chicago, also about 20 minutes north of O’Hare airport (zip code 60015). The car must be picked up by December 6th . (Or special arrangements made) Buyer to pay $1000 deposit immediately following the close of auction with the remaining funds to be paid within 7 days or prior to picking up the car. On Nov-15-10 at 17:26:49 PST, seller added the following information: To answer questions that have been asked: Does the car have air conditioning? - No Does the convertible top work? - Yes, it folds/functions fine - there is normal rubbing/wear on the Navy Blue top Are the manuals original? My guess is the service manual (blue and white) is "aftermarket" but the Parts Manual (Orange) and the 250 SL brochure (White) are 100% original and in excellent condition. I have been asked by many people to sell these separately - while I appreciate the generous offers, I have listed them with the car and will sell them that way. I hope they add some value for the buyer. What are the undercarriage and wheel wells like? Again, I am not a "car guy" and condition is relative. There is some corrosion, the mercedes "expert" that looked at the car said the condition was average and typical for these cars. The wheel wells do not show corrosion and appear solid. Are the headlights intact - any corrosion around headlights? Yes - they appear intact (no cracks or anything) and no, there is no corrosion apparent around the headlights On Nov-17-10 at 16:37:22 PST, seller added the following information: Answers to an additional questions asked: What is the status of the title? I have clean/clear title. There are no liens on the vehicle. I will sign over title upon payment. (It will by the buyers responsibility (and expense) to file all necessary paperwork and to register the car in their particular location) What is recommended for the car "post storage" to get it running? Again, I am not a car guy, but I would recommend to have the fluids replaced, it may or may not need a new battery, the brakes and tires should be checked, etc. I have always leaned toward safety and for more thorough work to make sure the car is not damaged. The car was running well before being stored for several years, I am not aware of any issues from a mechanical standpoint but because the car is not running and my specific expertise is very limited, the car is being sold "As Is". On Nov-17-10 at 20:04:57 PST, seller added the following information: I received a question about shipping? The car is located about 20 minutes north of O'Hare airport in Chicago. Is has been stored for several years and will need attention prior to running/driving and a buyer should plan accordingly in maknig arrangements. It is up to the buyer to make appropriate shipping arrangements for the car to be picked up. The car must be removed prior to December 6th (sooner would be better). I can be reasonably flexible in terms of meeting a carrier anytime after the auction ends.
