Vehicle Detail
I am listing this Lotus for a good friend. This car has been kept in a heated garage since restoration began. I have asked my friend, the owner and restorer of this car, to list what has been done to the car since he went out and picked it up and began the restoration process. Following is his description of the project. Please direct questions to this site and I will attempt to answer or will put you in touch with the owner to get a definitive answer! I can email larger pics if needed. So here goes straight from the owners mouth:The car is a 1964 Lotus Elan Series 1, number 3657, that I bought from it's original owner, who bought it new from Pulver & Cox in Manhattan in 1964. It was driven until the early Seventies, then put away in a barn. I got it out of the barn in New Jersey six years ago and spent three years restoring it. Current mileage shown on odometer is 20,057- which is probably 120,057. I replaced the entire frame with a new Lotus factory frame (painted steel) from England and had the engine and Weber carbs rebuilt by Barry Sale, a Lotus Twin-Cam expert, at PHP Racengines in Wauconda, Illinois. The engine has all new pistons, valves, guides, bearings, valve seats, water pump, etc. and is bored .040 over, with upgraded later stock cams and was dynoed at 125 bhp. Foreign Car Specialists of Madison, Wisconsin, installed new bearings and seals in the differential and close-ratio gearbox. The fiberglass body was soda-blasted, re-gel-coated and painted BRG by Marklein Auto Body of Dodgeville, Wisconsin. I installed new powdercoated lower A-arms at the rear, a CV-joint axle kit to replace the stock rubber donut system, as well as new anodized front lower A-arms. All hub and wheel bearings were replaced, and I installed new springs and Spax adjustable shocks all around. A local upholstery shop installed new seat covers and interior panels. Other new parts: Tires, aluminum fuel tank, brake and clutch master cylinders, brake lines, brake rotors & pads, gear-reduction starter motor (Japanese) suspension bushings, both vacuum pods for headlights, wiring harness, convertible top, seat belts and mounts, floor mats, steering shaft joints and rod ends, Lucas Sport coil, cap and plug wires, starter solenoid, voltage regulator, fuse block, windshield glass, exhaust header, stainless muffler and tailpipe from England, handbrake cable and pads, speedometer cable, electrical relays, air cleaner, chromed Lotus Elan 1600 logos on body, lug nuts, steering rack boots and motor mounts. Rebuilt or reconditioned parts: Rebuilt generator and distributor, cleaned out and re-soldered radiator, rechromed door handles and inner door trim, repainted stock wheels and found a set of stock used hubcaps in excellent condition. Current condition: Car is an excellent driver in beautiful condition, driven about 2,200 miles since restoration. There is some light scuffing on the door sills and the Smiths electric tach needs to be rebuilt, as the needle is currently swinging around aimlessly. On Oct-07-10 at 20:28:38 PDT, seller added the following information: If you have questions regarding this car, please call the owner between 9 am and 9pm central time and he will answer any questions you may have. 608-873-8387On Oct-10-10 at 07:40:29 PDT, seller added the following information: I had a question concerning the convertible top and realized I forgot to describe it. The top is in excellent condition (brand new)(black). The frame is the original and in excellent condition. All snaps and studs are new.
