Vehicle Detail

This is a rare Left Hand Drive 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ42. Read on below to get all the details, and see the pictures, and video clips of this rare truck:Canadian Land Cruisers: This is an original North American spec unit with rare Left Hand Drive configuration and factory Toyota diesel engine manufactured for the Canadian market. Most diesel Land Cruisers are Right hand Drive, as they come from overseas locations. Canadians were the only North American country offered a choice of Gas or Diesel powered units, and the more expensive diesels were soon found to be the vehicle of choice for there superior off-road capabilities, due to the low RPM torque the diesel provides. The increased fuel economy, range and longevity were additional bonuses. Many of the old Land Cruisers that are still on the road in Canada are the diesel models, as they simply outlasted their gasoline counterparts. These trucks were quite expensive when new, costing about twice as much as a Jeep CJ, so not many were sold. Of the survivors, many of the best units have already gone south to the the USA for semi-retirement in milder weather. This truck was found and is still located in Vancouver, where the weather is very mild compared with the rest of the country, and being at sea level only experiences a few days of snow per year. Perhaps this explains why this unit so much better than most.Rust!: Although Canada got Diesel Land Cruisers, and they are of course are the standard Left hand Drive configuration, most of them have been very well used. Due to cooler climate, and salt used on Canadian roads, many of them suffer from considerable rust. The rust can get so bad, that many of them have severely rusted frames, and heavily repaired bodies. The frames often rust right through, and often go completely near the rear spring perches, and the bodies usually rust almost everywhere, and tend to go out around rear body tub area, rear sill, door bottoms, front fenders, and front bib. Finding a decent Diesel Land Cruiser in Canada is not very easy any more. Most of the 40 series trucks have been rebuild several times, often replacing the entire rear body tub with Aluminum etc. Very few original unmolested truck exist that are not totally rusted out. I have located two decent original 40 series trucks in Canada in the last 5 years. This is the second one. Rusty trucks are not worth buying at any price, no matter what kind of bargain they may seem. This unit is not exactly rust free, but it is really excellent compared to almost any other you might ever hope to find. By Canadian standards, it is excellent.Body and Frame: This truck has an original all steel body in excellent condition. There is almost no signs of steel work or patching. The only patch I can find is a 2" strip on the underside of the rear floor near the rear sill. The floors, door bottoms, and wheel wells are all excellent with no signs of serious rust. They are very solid, and sound. There are no aluminum replacement parts anywhere on the truck. It is all steel. The frame is very solid, even towards the rear near the spring perches where problems often arise. The solid frame and body on this unit make it an outstanding unit overall. This truck has never had a major restoration that I can tell. It looks more like a well looked after survivor with lots of preventative maintenance, and only some minor restoration work over the years. It has an order repaint on it with some bubbles, and light surface rust showing in seams, and typical places.Engine & Drivetrain: This truck is equipped with the desirable 3B engine, which is a 3.4 litre, 4 cylinder diesel engine. This is one of the most common Toyota diesel ever built, and is proven as quite a bullet-proof engine. Although not as well known in the USA, these motors, and and parts for them can be found, as they are also used in Toyota Lift Trucks (forklifts) and to drive many large refrigeration units. Many Land Cruisers equipped with this engine, have gone over 500,000 Km's (310,000 Miles) before rebuild. The transmission is a 4 speed manual. The transfer case offers 4WD selection, and low range gearing options. This engine runs well and still makes decent power, but fresh injectors, and new glow plugs would probably make quite a difference. Like almost all older diesel cruisers, it smokes pretty good on start up, and once it settles down it burns considerably cleaner pushing little smoke. Replacing the glow plugs, and injectors would help considerably with this. These parts are available from Toyota Canada, or from Spector Off-Road in California.Interior: The original seat upholstery is torn up but the foam is still OK. Aftermarket seat covers are in place. The rear jump seats are good, and original. Headliner is sagging in places and looking a bit soiled. The rest of the steel is correct and unmolested with the exception of 1 aftermarket toggle swich added to the dash, and the radio opening enlarged somewhet to accomodate a larger stereo.Overall Condition: As mentioned, these trucks are very hard to find in this condition. It is quite original and basically unmolested with almost no modifications. The electrical system is sound with all lights and indicators functioning correctly. The fan, wipers, hazards, fuel gauge, and headlights are all working. The starter and alternator are working well, and the twin batteries are holding charge. The tires are 235/75R15 Toyos and have no damage and 95% tread left, and the spare has never hit the road. This truck runs decently. I have been using it as a daily driver for the last few weeks. It can make a top speed of about 120 kph/75 mph on the highway, but is happier a bit slower. The transmission shifts correctly, and the clutch is good, and does not slip. The transfer and locking hubs case are working correctly and 4WD and low range engage and disengage properly without noise, or any problems. Steering is OK. Typical of any older truck, this truck floats slightly on the highway. Alignment would help with this. The brakes are decent and stop the truck well. The emergency brake is not working. The odometer is stuck at 340,000 Km's (211,000 miles).About me: I have owned over 60 Toyotas, and located and owned over 40 rarer diesel Land Cruisers over the last 30 years and have hobby level experience with Japanese 4x4 going back to 1979, with my first truck, a 1969 Nissan Patrol. I Have imported dozens of Right Land Drive cruisers from overseas into North America, and exported a number of Land Cruisers into the USA. If you are looking for a Left hand Drive 40 series in decent un-restored shape, I would be very hard pressed to find you anything better than this. If you are looking for something else, drop me a note at trading@telus.net and if I can locate it for you I will, but please keep in mind that it is a very slow process locating decent worthwhile vehicles that I consider worth obtaining and exporting..Pricing and reserve: The last Canadian BJ42 I located which is also happened to be a red 1982 , now resides in the mountains of Northern California with a very happy owner. It sold for around 20,000.00USD. The market on all collectible vehicles has softened considerably, so my reserve is set at a very reasonable level of less than half of that to ensure a sale.Importing a Canadian market Land Cruiser into the USA: I was born in California, and now live in Canada, and have helped a number of Americans legally import foreign units into the USA. This truck would be an easy import with North American compliance plate. It is over 25 years old so is exempt from regulation, and should be fairly easy to title legally in all states. California is the only tricky state with all their complex state regulations. I have sent a couple of diesel Land Cruisers down there, with mixed results. One is on the road legally, and the other fellow had trouble with DMV, and will have to title it in another state before he can get a California tile for it, so Californians have a tougher time of it. Any other state has been no problem, from my experience. If you are from California, please keep this in mind before bidding. To bring it into the USA you can use a Customs Broker at a cost of a few hundred dollars, but to be honest, I can provide the 2 forms needed, and help you fill them out, saving you this cost. You will have to pay a few percent duty on the sale price, and you can cross the border, and bring it to your home state for titling etc. Transport: This truck is quite drivable and roadworthy, and may make it a long distance, but I think it may be wiser to trailer it, or ship it to any longer destinations. It was in storage for a few years before I put it on the road recently. It drives decently, but it may be wiser to keep it closer to home to shake the dust off it, and go over it, before driving at across the continent. Payment: A lot of people dream about old Land Cruisers. I am one of them! But, if you don't have the funds in place to buy one right now, feel free to get in touch with me about your needs, and your future dream truck, but please do not bid on the auction. I don't want to have to run it twice, and it is not fair to the serious bidders, if there are any insincere bids. A $500.00 non refundable immediate deposit must be made within 30 minutes of the auction ending. I will invoice you directly for this deposit. The balance must be paid in full within 36 hours of the auction end, and can be made by direct bank wire transfer, or credit card through Paypal. VIN: The Vehicle Identification Number for this vehicle is: JT3BJ42C4C0004260 On Oct-05-10 at 22:41:21 PDT, seller added the following information: VIDEO CLIPS: I have added a couple of video clips so you can see and hear the truck running, and see it driving on the highway. Toyota 3.4 liter 4 cylinder 3B diesel engine: These trucks are built for the trail and not highway driving. 75MPH is a little quick for this truck. It is happiest a little slower, but here it is:
