Vehicle Detail
THE BAD: Rear hatch was recently damaged and needs to be replaced. Hatch is closed and locked but has no glass; the bodywork around the glass was bent slightly so new glass will not fit properly and needs replacing with a used unit (typically around $450 on ebay but needs to be found locally because of difficulties in shipping a rear hatch). The driver's side front fender also is damaged (see pic) but this does not affect the drive-ability at all. Tires will need replacing soon- they have good tread but one has a slow leak and another a slight bubble on the outer wall. Expect new brake pads soonish also. The car has a Viper remote start unit installed but doesn't always work because I believe the contact points on the gear shifter are probably dirty (car has to recognize that it's in neutral before it will start). There is a small (less than half inch) chip in the windshield that has been there for years and has never shown any signs of spreading. THE GOOD: One owner Protege 5 hatchback; engine, gearbox and driveline are strong- oil changed every ~5,000 miles up to about 60k and then synthetic oil only used since then. Serpentine belts just replaced. Interior is in very good shape with good leather seats, factory sunroof, roof rack, wired for Sirius satellite radio, Mazda "Austostick" transmission, power windows & locks. Clear title (NOT a salvage title). THE NET RESULT: Strong running car, dependable, easy and fun to drive but needs the rear hatch replaced. These are great cars- we've just bought two more- one to replace this and one to replace our Nissan. Can't beat these cars.
