Vehicle Detail
1972 Pontiac Trans Am 455 HO certified by PHS, Pontiac Historical Society was originally delivered to Union Park Pontiac in Wilmington, DE on 10/25/71. I have owned this car since 1996 and financed the restoration using OEM, NOS and reproduction parts. The car is correct. I have all the documentation on the car since I purchased it in 1996 and I am reluctantly selling this rare classic due to space limitations. I will describe every aspect of the car in detail. I welcome your questions and the car is available for inspection in the Pine Grove, PA area by appointment. I purchased the car in 1996 from a body shop in Hershey, PA that had the car sitting there for 8 years. The car was mostly complete and it ran, but the engine was not original. The car came with the correct block, heads and the rest of the components in a box. Over the next 12 years I repaired, replaced or located the missing parts to make the car correct. The car looks, runs and drives as it should. Engine: The block is a 455 HO, 4-bolt main with the correct casting numbers. However, there is no code or serial number stamped on the front of the block. Based on the casting number the block was either a service replacement, or was sourced from another 1972 455 HO. It never bothered me so I used this block and had it rebuilt to factory specifications. The heads are the correct 7F6 casting and were completely rebuilt. The intake is the correct 2-piece aluminum intake with the cast iron crossover. The carburetor is numbers matching, but has a crack in the interior bowl. I replaced the carburetor with an aftermarket Rochester OE spec from SEI with an electric choke. The original carburetor will go with the car as well. The distributor is the special order, transistorized ignition unit and is numbers matching. The entire engine assembly was checked, machined and rebuilt with new, factory spec components. The engine runs strong and shows about 500 miles since the rebuild. Transmission: I found a receipt in the car confirming that the previous owner had the TH-400 transmission replaced at AAMCO with a remanufactured assembly. I had the transmission completely rebuilt including a new torque convertor. The transmission has a unique electronic speed sensor that works with the transistorized ignition. No issues. Rear Differential: The rear differential is original to the car. I had the center, limited slip carrier and gear set replaced during the restoration. In addition, all new bearings, seals and hardware were installed. No issues. Underbody & Suspension: During the restoration all suspension components were replaced as was the steering box, brake lines, brake booster, brake calipers and brake hardware, springs, fuel tank and sending unit. Due to the complex vapor recovery system, the existing fuel and vapor lines were cleaned and reinstalled. The exhaust was replaced with a Garner OE system. No issues, the car runs, drives and handles great. Body: The car had the usual rust in the rear quarters, but the frame rails were in great shape. The car was stripped and new metal installed. The car was restored on a rotisserie and the undercarriage looks as good as the body. The car is finished in base coat/clear coat and new 3M decals were installed. The body lines are good, and the car fits better than new. The paint is very good to great, but not perfect. The car shows great. No issues! Interior: The original blue interior was replaced with Year One components. The am/fm radio was restored but does not work at this time. I think there is an issue with the antenna connection, but the factory 8-track plays fine. The original Pontiac Dealer 8-track tape is still in the car! There is a seat belt missing from the left side and the shoulder straps are gone. I intended to search for these items, and never got to that point. Overall the interior is sound, tight and correct. The am/fm and the seat belts are the only issues. Wheels: The car was delivered with Rally II wheels, but the car had the correct honeycomb wheels on it when I purchased it so I kept them. They have been restored and fitted with new BF Goodrich Radial TA’s. I have not added up the money spent on this restoration to date, but I’m sure it’s well over my reserve price. I would like to sell this car so the reserve reflects a reasonable value considering the rarity of this car which is 1 of 828 automatics and 1 of approximately 400 white automatic cars. This auction is for serious buyers only. If you have no feedback, please do not bid. Please do not ask for my reserve. If you want the car, bid accordingly. I will need a deposit within 3 days of the auction close and arrangements need to be made to conclude the deal within 10 days. I may be able to assist with transport depending on your situation. Please email me with any questions. I just revised my buy-it-now price that reflects thousands off of this car's current value. Thank you!
