Vehicle Detail

This 1973 Porsche 914s 2.0 is a (1) previous family owner, a true survivor with 33,960 service documented miles history. It's a good story read on... This 914 was bought at Carousel Porsche in Hopkins, MN. in early 1973. One of the pictures shows the actual odometer statement of 21 miles when purchased. The original owner really enjoyed this car over the next three years until 1976. The pics below show all of the original service receipts showing the milage up to around 28K or so. These receipts were mostly all from the original dealer. The original owner was very particular. The previous owner married and had kids, and drove the car to his cabin in northern Minnesota where it lived for the next 31 years indoors in a heated garage. The car was driven occasionally over the years in the summer, and in 2007, the Porsche passed from father to son. The son took the 914 from the cabin to The Phoenix Auto shop in St. Louis Park, MN where he had the entire engine rebuilt and converted the FI to Dual Weber Carbs. The engine was bored to 100mm and a new Skat Cam was installed. The car runs perfect. The receipt shows 32,000 miles at this time. I spoke to the shop owners son who worked on the car and he stated out of all the 914's he has worked on this by far was the cleanest and lowest milage they had seen. I was concerned about verification of the milage because for these age cars there is no car fax of sorts. I really grilled the shop about the milage just wondered why a car with 32K miles at the time would need to be rebuilt? The shop owner stated this was due to the seals inside the engine possible going bad from sitting. I noticed the tires not being factory original and asked about those with the low milage. Sitting so long causes tires go bad obviously. They also cleaned out the gas tank and lines. So with the service records showing the mileage increments, and the excellent condition of the interior, chassis, floor, and gauges being very bright and white, I felt I had no reason to doubt this survivor. I went to that shop and got the original receipts showing all the work (see pic). The son had big dreams of driving the car but when the economy tanked, he ended up working more and the car was taken back up to the cabin, but was frequently driven to keep it fresh to the current 33,960 milage. Car has a great history as you can see. Now for the details.... It’s in very original condition, with original engine and 901 trans, original wheels, and factory accessories. This is the 73 2.0L folks. Originally 91 HP, the shop stated it is around 125-130HP now. With the Targa top either on or off, driving a 914 makes you feel like a kid in a candy store...excited and full of energy. The experience is pure fun - both for driver and passenger. Many equate it to driving a grown up go-kart; taking the twists and turns with attitude and coming back for more. Upon seeing the 914’s sporty, yet Spartan layout, you’ll notice everything is crisp and in good standing. The factory cluster of gauges down below in the center console add a race car-inspired cache. Electrical system seems fine, and things seem proper: headlights, signals, dash gauges, and even the clock! The temp guage has been touchy though and may need to be cleaned as it works sometimes. Interior is original and untouched. Sure, there is a little wear and tear in some areas of the carpeting and driver’s seat, but after 35 years of use, I’d say it’s held up pretty well. Doors close easily, no slamming required, and all the locks work by using one, single key. There are two sets of original keys. The body is straight with some of the usual parking lot dings and was repainted years ago by the original owner in the factory applied color-scheme . As you can tell by the photos, the paint is shiny and with a nice reflection and luster. On the passenger’s side, there are a couple minor creases and a small chip in the paint that’s a few inches long. Up front on the passenger door there is a scratch. Since it’s not perfect, this 914 presents itself as a true "Survivor" that hasn’t been restored, just well-maintained. Not raced, not auto-crossed. Shocks are great and brakes stop very well. Front trunk is clean and contains a matching original spare rim with newer tire to complete the set. Pop-up headlights work. Rear trunk is clean, too, and offers a storage area for the Targa top, which is in great shape. Bottom trunk wells for both are solid overall, with only minor blemishes here and there. The hellhole under the battery is a little dirty, and some minor surface rust but no holes or rust through. See pics. This 2.0 liter engine is rebuilt new. The 4-cylinder motor is reliable, parts are readily available, and upkeep is minimal. In fact, this motor has very little miles on it since rebuild. The car runs great and has been reliable through the years. It’s quite economical, too, makes for great summer driving without the guilt. But boy those Weber Carbs are fun when they really open up at 3500rpm. Even though the original radio works, I would rather just listen to the Webers.... Updated 8/5/2010 4:18pm - I have gotten quite a few inquiries on two things. (1) why am I selling it? (2) What does it need. I will cover that below. (1) This was one of those purchases where I had always wanted one since I was a teenager. I sold my 71 Chevelle and wanted something fun to drive. But I am a big guy. 6'1" and 285. This car doesn't fit me well for the long term. Its a blast to drive though. I had originally thought, ya I will join the PCA, and go rally race it...When I originally looked at it, I had no idea it was a (1) family owner, and the low milage. After getting it and seeing the great condition it is in and being a survivor car with the low documented milage I knew I didn't feel right modifying the car. I would feel guilty doing so, but thats just me. Yes the engine was souped up when rebuilt, but thank God for that, because it screams. (2) Needs: Windshield wiper motor. I have found quite a few originals for $25-35 on Ebay with linkage. This was disclosed to me from the original owners. I already covered the temp gauge above. Other then that, nothing that I have seen mechanically. And yes I have lawyer friends......unfortunately If you have zero feedback or less than 5 feedbacks, contact me first before bidding. Please understand if you bid and win the auction you are contractually obligated to pay. If you do not I have the right to pursue legal action and you will be responsible for all legal fee's.
