This is an original, 409/409 Impala with two, 4-barrel Carter AFB's carburetors and 4-speed transmission. That’s right, the one that the Beach boys were singing about in '62. Coming from a mature, private collector, the car has been meticulously restored, maintained, garaged and covered. Simply put, the car is in SUPERIOR OVERALL CONDITION. As for vision and objectives during the restoration, this simple '409' is a living, breathing, serviceable machine that has exceeded the proud owner’s expectations in every way. This is an extremely fast, reliable muscle car that doesn’t look like a cobbled together pile of aftermarket bolt-ons. By viewing all the photos, it becomes clear that serious time and considerable money was invested to restore and create this masterpiece. Exterior: Check out the beautiful, Tuxedo Black paint. With the exception of a couple minor chips and scratches, the finish looks so deep, you could dive into it. Body gaps between hoods, doors, and fenders are of reference quality, the chrome sparkles like new. None of the rubber seals are cracked and there is NO corrosion or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights. The full-width aluminum-and-chrome panel houses the triple-unit taillight assembly. Note some minor surface scratches in these photos The chrome sparkles like new... Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at the detail. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marquee could be proudly displayed at a local car show or Concourse d'Elegance. Mounted to the Rally Wheels are Hoosier Pro Street 26x7.50x15 Radials in the Front… …and Hoosier Quick Time 27x10.50x15 Street Legal Slicks in the rear. The owner never raced this car; the slicks were only installed for that ‘60’s Drag Look. Engine & Mechanical: The car's engine compartment is simply stunning and factory-correct, down to the decals and markings. The 409/409 engine was completely gone through and is in perfect running condition. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no leaks. No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this Impala is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any ‘409’ can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! The 409 Cubic Inch, 8 cylinder power plant with ceramic exhaust inhales through two, 4-barrel Carter AFB's carburetors. It sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. The 4 speed, manual transmission is in perfect harmony with 4.10 Positraction Rear End by Unitrax. The engine starts and idles smoothly in any weather, revs and pulls like an F-16 Fighter Jet, shifting smoothly through the gears with no noises or smoke. Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 40 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 70 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Smooth, strong acceleration will pull you into the back of your seat and turn heads coming and going. Oh, and this car won’t be leaving any oil for you to slip on, nor will you see any smoke in your rearview mirror! Above is the manufacture plate. Interior: The upholstery is all new in factory correct red (trim code 874) and absolutely immaculate. Bare-bones functionality highlights this original interior. From the loop carpeting and combination vinyl/cloth seats to the door panels and headliner… …everything is factory correct, right down to the stock, AM radio and rear seat speaker grill. Fit and finish are flawless. Upon close inspection, you’d swear to be looking a 4 year-old, not a 48 year old interior. This one’s that clean! The Alpine RUE-4187 sound system is hidden under the driver's seat. Here's the remote. A closer look in the trunk reveals a spectacular, Alpine MRV-F450 V12 Power Amplifier driving a Bazooka Base Tube Sub Woofer for the base and two, Eclipse Co-Axle Speakers in the front kick panels for the mid and upper range. All this assures incredible audio performance; even at speeds exceeding double nickel. Let’s take a peak underneath: From the new, Unitrax rear-end and KYB shocks to the 3” Flowmaster exhaust; everything below proudly displays the extensive restoration and performance upgrades. Drivability: Paramount to the Muscle Car, driving experience is the element of unadulterated fun. Handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies pulling or fading. All in all, this ’62 Impala is a thoroughly convincing performer. In fact, this Impala’s steering makes a mockery of the rubberized, over-assisted control mechanisms that pass for most modern cars' guidance systems. It's smooth, discreet, very precise and controllable. Gung-ho throttle steer is available if you're in the mood, well-mannered road-holding if you're not. The chassis inspires with its unsophisticated charm; its transparency is convincing. Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true muscle car has ended. It has ended with the introduction of catalytic converters and engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows and power-assisted thinking, even in the US. It has ended with the 62 Chevy. This Impala, however, is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise! This fine, 409 is among the finest examples remaining from the pinnacle of the back-to-basics, muscle car era. Imagine owning this vintage Sport Coupe. In less than one week, you can be one of the very few to own and drive such a rare and beautiful collectible. Federal regulations now dictate that vehicles 10 years and older are exempt from miles certifications. We’ve been told by the previous owner that this is an original mile car. Please note however that presently, we do not have sufficient documentation to substantiate with absolute certainty that the 86,400 reading displayed on the car’s 5-digit odometer is accurate. Therefore, the miles cannot be deemed reliable at this time. This Impala’s present condition has been described as accurately as possible. Don’t miss out on the unique opportunity to acquire this beautiful, rare, 409 Impala that is appreciating daily. With NO RESERVE PRICE, it is sure to remain an outstanding investment for the winning bidder and a joy to drive for many years to come. Thank you, good luck and HAPPY BIDDING!On Jun-22-10 at 10:42:32 PDT, seller added the following information: This Impala may be a “CLONE 409” This Impala has a REAL 409 engine however it’s difficult to distinguish genuine factory 409 ‘s from those 8 cylinder models that may have been converted over years ago. The VIN specifies this car is a 1962 Impala 8 cylinder 2 door sport coupe built in Janesville, WI so we can guarantee it’s genuine V8 (as opposed to a 6-cylinder). Because we have received emails from a couple skeptics, we decided to do our own research. Pouring over various websites that offer help identifying a true 348 or 409 cars, we’ve found some that list various parts that 348 & 409 equipped cars would have. Here are a few inconsistencies: Electronic Tachometer: Factory 409 Impalas came with a mechanical tachometer and this one clearly has a reproduction, electronic tach. This may have been changed because the electronic tachs are far more accurate. Radiator Shroud: To improve the cooling system, the present owner changed the radiator shroud to a more efficient one and added a modern fan clutch. The old fan shroud was tossed. 3/8” Fuel Line: This Impala does NOT appear to have a specially routed, 3/8” fuel line consistent with a factory 409. Oil Pan: One eBay member suggested the oil pan is wrong however our research cannot confirm this. This Impala does have a REAL 409 engine with a factory 4-speed transmission. Other than what is noted above, it appears to be equipped with all the cool stuff that a factory 409 would normally come with from the factory. Please bid accordingly. Thanks!
