Vehicle Detail

HISTORICAL NOTES The last few years of Packard were not good ones. By 1957 all production had been moved to the Studebaker plant in South Bend and there was no budget for design. Designers had to be creative in trying to turn a Studebaker into a Packard. The result was odd to say the least. The budget was so low that cars weren’t even named. This one is just Packard Station Wagon. These Packards are very rare with only 2,622 models manufactured but the wagon was the rarest model with only 159 produced and only 20 remaining examples. The soon-to-be history Packard brand was already in the hands of the soon-to-be history Studebaker brand by the time the 1957 and 1958 "Packardbakers" were produced. Based on the Studebaker President, the Packard name was retained in the hopes of building a luxury Packard line in the future. Money was tight, so most of the styling is done rather cheaply and in a way that made them merely nice Studebakers. Given their lack of popularity, the models are quite rare. Among the most rare is the station wagon. In 1958, just 159 of the wagons were produced making the remaining ones some of the most collectible Packards/Studebakers NOTES FROM PREVIOUS OWNER Lo & Behold - another rare 1958 Packard station wagon - can you believe it? Here's the barn find version - stored for 35 years - we've got it running smoothly. This is a very rare car (#118 of 159 made) needing restoration. The car is in running order with the original drive train including power steering, power brakes, original interior & paint. We did new tires, brake lines, gas lines, gas tank cleaned, put on NOS tailpipes and mufflers. The car is registered and on the road. The interior is intact but needs cleaning with attention to the windlace and door panels. It needs rugs. The Packard station wagon came from the factory with a roof rack and twin antennas which this car has. The radio does not play but the Wonder Bar feature does work. Body does have rust but we have most panels needed to repair including an NOS left front fender. All curved glass good. It runs great. Paint is Canyon Copper w/Parchment White, matching interior. CURRENT STATUS OF THE VEHICLE I purchased the vehicle a little over a year ago. I drove it some, and found it to be road worthy and reliable. My intent was to “pair it up” with my fully restored 1958 Packard Hawk. About five months ago the body work was begun. At this time, I have decided that because I have three projects ahead of it, and my initial enthusiasm has waned, I am putting it up for sale. Obviously, it is a rare vehicle. I have posted pictures of the vehicle when I received it and in its current condition. I have also posted the records of the work that was done on the vehicle by the previous owner. Please go to www.picturetrail.com/wishlee123, and click on the Packard Wagon album. It does drive, and the interior is certainly in a condition in which it can be serviceable (kept original). It is, however, a project, and will require work. I do feel that because of its “rarity” that it is worth the effort and investment. Of course I have a good deal of money “invested” in the car, and my loss is certainly your gain. It is sold as is. I can assist a buyer with making transportation arrangements. On May-18-10 at 16:12:07 PDT, seller added the following information: I APPRECIATE ALL OF THE INTEREST IN THE PACKARD AND QUESTIONS. I KNOW THE DIFFICULTY IN MAKING AN EDUCATED BUYING DECISION FOR A CAR LIKE THIS ONE. I HAVE POSTED AN ADDITIONAL 56 PICTURES AT www.picturetrail.com/wishlee123 PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THEM TO HELP CLARIFY THE CURRENT CONDITION OF THE CAR.
