Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1988 Volvo 240 DL Station wagon. I’ve really liked these “bricks” for some time and finally worked out a deal to get one. Only problem is now my company wants me to relocate and I won’t be able to take all the vehicles I own to my new apartment so the brick has to go. Clear VA title in my name Station wagon (Estate) 2.3L B230 gas engine Fuel injected 5 speed transmission 4 wheel disc brakes New drive belts New distributor cap and rotor New air filter and replaced cover of air box New windshield wipers front and back Recently cleaned the engine with Sea Foam in intake and gas tank Tires are in great condition and have a lot of tread left AC not working – comp doesn’t kick on. I think it just needs refrigerant but don’t know for sure. Trailer hitch and wiring Sale will include: 5 Virgo turbo rims and 4 tires (getting hard to find these) New parking brake center console (one in car is broken) New spark plugs and extra drive belts Interior door trim pieces (see pic) Original 1988 owners and maintenance manuals Bentley service manual Fuses and various bulbs Engine runs great and has 217,XXX miles on it. I put XXX because I drive it almost every day and will add a couple more miles until it’s sold. Starts with turn of key and no pumping of gas pedal. There is some oil and crud on the engine here and there. Haven’t had time to fully clean it. I haven’t noticed any new stains on my driveway since I’ve owned this car. I frequently check fluids and other maint. items on all my vehicles and haven’t noticed any oil usage on it. From info I’ve been able to gather I think the engine was rebuilt approx. 60K miles ago. I’m not positive. If you know anything about the engine in these cars you’ll know it’s barely broken in at 60K miles. Trans shifts and functions smooth, clutch functions just fine. As far as the timing belt, I think from guestimating in looking at the paperwork and talking with a previous owner, it was last changed approx. the same time as the engine rebuild. The maint. interval for timing belts on these cars is every 50K miles. For anyone that doesn’t know, these engines are called non-interference engines. Simply means that if the timing belt ever breaks it doesn’t destroy the engine. The engine just shuts off. The turbo rims are straight but dirty with brake dust in the tight spaces and on the back side. There are a couple with scratches on the lip but doesn’t look very serious. I had planned on just having them blasted and powder coated. To me these are the best looking rims Volvo ever put on these cars. Virginia residents: If you want to register it in VA you may or may not have to do some work to get it to pass VA inspection. The inspection is not standard at all stations. I had it inspected and they failed the car. If I took it that same day to another station they may have passed it. Many times it just depends on where you take it to be inspected. I had it inspected at a Volvo repair facility. I’m guessing they just wanted to make some $$ off me. I had planned to do all of the work on the car but now have to sell it because of moving. These items are pretty easy in my book. Here are the items that they say it needs. Brake pedal is spongy – could just need bleeding. I haven’t had time to look at it. Brake pads needed front and back – disc brake pads are simple to change. They said the rotors were within limits. Left rear brake caliper is frozen – tech at shop advised me that this was a normal occurrence and they’ve had good luck with just unfreezing them. Since they don’t diagnose during an inspection, he couldn’t tell me for sure. Personally I’d just replace it, Broken trans mount – I questioned them about this because I can’t tell it from driving it. Back up lights stay on – tech said most likely the switch on the transmission. Left headlamp is loose – I did some research and haven't found this one as a requirement to pass inspection. Rust in the floor pan – Not rusted out but a couple spots. The under side looks pretty solid overall. My van was swiss cheese with rust in comparison and passed inspection every time. It’s all in who does the inspection. This car is pretty solid in my opinion. License plate lights not working – haven’t gotten to this one yet. I think the bulbs are just burned out. I’ve replaced a couple of tail light and turn signal bulbs already. These items are pretty easy to correct in my opinion, I just can’t do them now because I won’t have anywhere to park the car when I move. I’ve only had the car a month and don’t know if there may be any other problems with the car. I think it’s in pretty good condition for being 22 years old. Biggest plus in my book for this car is how good it runs. I had planned on pretty much restoring it to new condition. Runs and drives great as previously stated. If you plan on driving it home just remember the brake pedal is spongy. It won’t stop on a dime and it’ll take a minute or two to get used to. Works fine for me because I drive like granny anyway. It has a VA inspection sticker that’s valid until May 24th. I have paperwork on service that’s been done in the past. I don’t think it’s all the paperwork but it’s better than nothing. I’m not happy that I have to sell it because even with the little bit of work it needs it’s a very solid car in great condition for being 22 years old. I know I won’t get out of it what I’ve put into it but there are a lot of brick fans out there who would probably like to have this one. I'm asking $995 but will accept offers. Now for the other info. I’ve done my best to describe everything that I know. No warranty is expressed or implied. Sale is As Is. No returns or refunds. Please ask as many questions as you need to. The sale of this car will be final. I will accept payment by paypal or cash in person. Local pickup only. I can’t ship it or drive it for you. Thanks and happy bidding. I noticed that the title history shows an odometer issue. I believe an owner in the past replaced the odometer at some point and that may be the reason for the title history issue.
