Vehicle Detail
This very handsome looking 1997 AUDI A6 QUATTRO WAGON has been our family vehicle for the last seven years. It has a clear title and from the Auto Check revealed that we are in fact the third owner. It has been a very safe and reliable car with excellent handling particularly in bad weather conditions (snow), no doubt due to the legendary and virtually infallible quattro permanent all-wheel drive. This is a sophisticated vehicle at $ 45,000 org. sticker price, and it hence sports all of the following extras: roof rack rails; ABS; heated front seats with memory lock; leather interior; front and rear fog lights; V6 2.8 fuel injected engine with 178 hp; alarm system; BOSE stereo; memory seats; large automatic sunroof, etc. The car still drives well. The motor runs strong and has always been serviced regularly with full-synthetic motor oil. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. It is quite fuel-efficient at 24mpg/highway/regular unleaded compared to an SUV of comparable size, and it has very recently passed a New York State inspection (April 2010). There is no surface rust, the paint is still shiny and there are only some rather minor scratches and chips that one would expect to find on a 13-year-old vehicle. The pictures do show paint chipping off the rear hatch spoiler, but this is made of plastic and not part of the body. It could be touched up easily. There are no rips or tears in the leather seats. It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels with Nokian (Finnish) all-weather tires. The front two tires were replaced with a matching pair four months ago. I estimate that the rear tires may have about 50 % tread life remaining. It has massive amounts of space, more than any of the newer Audi A6 wagons, and also the third, rear-facing, child seating. Many parts of this car have been replaced over the last years. The latest and most notable replacement was the fuel tank. This was done a year ago to the tune of over $ 2,000 because in this particular model of car the fuel tank is (still) made of steel and extremely difficult to replace -- the rear differential has to be disassembled. Other items that have been replaced in the recent years include: New sensors (incl. front oxygen sensor, coolant temp sensor); front struts; all new brakes (incl. all brake cables, rotors and calipers, twice in the last six years), new battery, wheel bearings, outer CV boot, new fuel lines, and many other parts. All Audi wagons have timing belts which need to be replaced every 90,000 miles or so and this tends to be a fairly expensive repair ($ 800 -1,200). This car has had its timing belt replaced at 89,000 miles, so it should be good to go for another 30,000 or so. In the interest of a smooth transaction, I would also like to disclose all of the follwing problems known to me: gearshift handle sticks (this does not restrict its functionality, but requires some levering in cold wheather. I was told this could be fixed easily with some grease); automatic sunroof currently does not function. The motor appears to be fine, but the fuse needs to be replaced for the mechanism to work. It can be opened/closed manually). The alarm system remote currently does not work. The car can be locked/unlocked centrally and alarmed from the rear hatch lock. Front brake rotors may need to be resurfaced. We have not been using this car much as of lately and the rotors may have warped due to weather conditions (depressing brake pedal causes pulsation). A/C compressor comes on, but AC is not blowing cold. System may need to be recharged, but in our neck of the woods we almost never use it. We do, however, use the heated seats extensively. Last but not least, I would like to make it clear that I am neither a dealer nor a car mechanic and have tried to describe this car to the best of my abilities. Clearly, this car has been driven extensively over many years and no doubt will need some maintenance if you intend on it remaining safe and reliable. There are no warranties or guarantees associated with this purchase. Vehicle may be picked up locally or shipped at the buyer’s expense and arrangement. Thank you for considering this auction.
