Vehicle Detail

1984 VW Rabbit Convertible, Ravenna Green, 4cyl, 1.8 liters. 180K miles. Great car for a student, great car for going to the beach. It gets 34 mpg and I’ve read that Rabbits of this era can get up to 40 with some tweaking. With oil prices expected to rise exponentially, this car is worth its weight in gold. And it is so much fun to drive. Great turning radius and ground clearance. Plus, it turns heads. People pull up at stoplights and ask me about the car. If you’re looking for a car to go undercover with, this is not it. This car was junk when I bought it, but its frame was straight, and its engine was in great condition. At over 160K miles, when we opened the engine up the cylinders were in perfect condition, no wear at all. They looked BRAND NEW – (my mechanic boyfriend was VERY impressed), thanks to that great German engineering and the previous owner using high quality oil filters (one of which I’m including with the car, along with miscellaneous other spare parts). I love this car. I’ll just put that out there. I am very sad to be selling it. So much fun to drive. Plus, when you take the top down, you can transport almost as much gear as you can with a truck. Truly, I’m addicted to this car. However, at the moment I’m trying to streamline my spending. Having a regular car payment, while probably more expensive in the long run, is easier for me to deal with than having the surprise repair costs related to the Rabbit that I've had the last couple of years. That said, the joke is definitely on me, because if you check out the list below, there’s not much more that needs to be replaced. I’ve had so much work done on it that a good percentage of the car is brand new! What’s been replaced in the last three years (and I have all the receipts): Transmission Exhaust systems Front axle, front struts Air conditioning Rear wheel bearings, left tie rod end, rear shock absorbers Drivers door handle Fuel pump Water pump Thermostat Timing belt tensioner, V Belts, Valve cover gasket Engine seals Upholstery Convertible top New tires (past six months) Brakes (2008) And miscellaneous other small parts that would make this list twice as long, but like I said, I have the receipts. What hasn’t been done: Needs new catyllitic converter (I was told it needs this before its next smog test, 1.5 years from now) Needs heater and s&l box with vacuum puller, vacuum reservoir (i.e. the heat doesn’t work) Dashboard panel is broken Has no radio (speakers work okay, though). Window seals could use replacing A few cosmetic details: the end caps for the bumpers are missing, the stick shift knob cap is missing, there are some small chips in the paint, not visible from six feet away. The worst chip by far is the one on the front hood, detailed in the close-up picture next to the keys for scale. The crack is about an inch long. All the other chips are closer to 1/16 of an inch. I am available Saturday, May 15th from 2 to 4 in the afternoon if you want to check it out in person, but I will only make the sale via the auction process. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to come and see the car.
