As the '70s dawned, convertible sales had already fallen sharply from their peak in 1965. That must surely have been on the minds of Buick execs as they approved plans for the redesigned full-size cars that appeared in 1971. Nevertheless, Buick continued full-size convertibles in the new generation, slotted in as the top droptop was the new Centurion, replacing the venerable performance-oriented Wildcat nameplate that was evidently deemed a liability in an era when "performance" was becoming a dirty word. This large piece of Detroit iron comes to us from the same consigner that brought us the Buick Wildcat. Obviously, a Buick fan, they made the transition from muscle car, to "economy" car...sort of! A fun convertible from the early 1970's, this Centurion has the larger 455ci V8. Exterior A repaint over original steel car, that was not restored in any way prior to painting. Peruse the photos carefully and you will get a very good idea as to the exact condition of the exterior surfaces on top and underneath. Plenty of room in the trunk, and plenty of car to smoothly cruise down the highway. Chrome and Brightwork is in fair condition showing pitting and patina, and some surface rust. The convertible top is in good condition and is raised and lowered electrically. A top covering "boot" is not seen. Standard Buick wheel covers are present, as well as the new larger 5MPH crash bumpers. Interior Like a spacious living room, there is ample space for the whole family and two dogs to boot within the interior confines. Reams of bone vinyl with tan belting adorn the split bench front seats as well as the bench rear seat. Tan vinyl completes the door panels along with creme plastic, and a faux woodgrain Centurion badge that spans the width of the door. A darker brown semi padded dash is in good condition with no cracks or tears. The faux woodgrain shows up again on the instrument panel which houses the gauges and warning lights and is fronted by the steering wheel. Drivetrain A 455ci V8 topped with a 4-barrel carburetor sits in the unrestored original engine bay. This power plant is coupled to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Double A arm suspension in front, and Coil Spring suspension adorns the rear. This 1973 land yacht shows in borderline fair condition. Surface rust, underside rust, and overall use patina shows throughout. Drivers side floorboard has been repaired, and underside shows surface rust typical for a car of this era. A good running engine, and smooth shifting transmission certainly are added attributes, and it can be said that this can be driven right off the lot.
