(Expensive) The engine & transmission:The original 2.8 engine was replaced at 122,786 miles. I purchased in 1992 a 1989 3.1 Fiero engine, still mounted to the assembly line pallet that was surplus when the car was discontinued from American Dismantlers in Detroit, MI. This firm purchased all remaining Fiero parts, engines, transmissions, etc after the cars were discontinued. They had only four engines left at that time. The displacement of the engine was verified by the part number on crank-shaft & pistons. Other changes were a different throttle body (I haven’t used), solenoid operated EGR system (see later notes), different style Throttle Position Switch), fuel rail with no place for a cold start injector (1989, the cold start injector was discontinued and the lower intake had a soft plug in the hole). The newer type oil pressure sender unit was on engine. Before installing this new engine, I sent it to Mike Myers Racing Engines, Marrero, LA to be blue printed. The heads were ported, polished, & intake & exhaust ground out to gasket size. Slithered-Bronze valve guides installed. S/S valves. Crane push rods, valve springs, & tappets. Crane Gold series cast aluminum 1.5 roller rocker arms. High temp valve stem keepers and seals. All the valve train was blue printed. A matching Crane cam along with new bearings & seals. The engine balanced. It has the internal balanced crankshaft. A Darrell Morse over-bore throttle body was installed. S/S fuel lines to braided lines & a fuel pressure gage. Rodney Dickman S/S vacuum lines installed & powder coated metallic blue. A new air filter, & the air filter container powder-coated red & cap silver. New seals were placed in top of container & bottom. Water trap was removed as well as throttle body water lines. The throttle position switch replaced as well as the idle air control valve. A new EGR solenoid added, fuel vapor filter canister, & brake servo filter. Oil pump was blue printed. Oil pan chromed. A/C bracket chromed. Water pump & alternator pulleys chromed. Rodney Dickman Idler Pulley Kit installed & respective belts. Rodney Dickman alternator bracket reinforcement plate added to alternator bracket. Alternator bracket was Jet Hot coated. Engine support bracket was chromed. Top intake manifold was Jet Hot coated as well as the middle & lower manifolds. Upper manifold has Fiero cast into it.
