Vehicle Detail

I'm out of room and its time to let a few things go. This is an original 1946 Chevrolet short bed pickup. This has to be one of nicest original survivors out there. The truck spent its entire life in Northern North Dakota until I purchased it about 6 years ago. There is no rust on this truck. Look anywhere you want on the fenders, body, bed, running boards, and so on and you will find absolutely no rust through anywhere. Very few dings on it. A few on the fenders but nearly none on the body. I believe the red body to be, for the most part, all original. The fenders have been repainted and you can see where they have had some body work done on the fenders in past years. I had planned on reworking the fenders only and spray them with a semi or low gloss finish to match the red on the body. But, it looks darn good just as it is. The seat had a rip in it and someone had patched it with some real sticky tape. It would stick to your pants and shirt and I had the seat cover replaced. Everything is original (seat springs, padding, etc), only the cover was replaced. Everything works on this old truck. Lights (still original 6 v with a generator) all work, all gauges work, speedometer works, heater works, even the vacuum wiper works including the adjustment knob to speed it up or slow it down. Its had turn signals added with the column signal indicator. The windshield still cranks in and out. The glass in the truck is original and its not the best. Its separated in places. But, I was never going to replace it. The door windows roll up and down but the drivers side will roll itself all the way down when you let go of the crank. Someone added a crank "catch" made out of a spring and a hook. I planned on pulling the door panel off and fixing it and tossing the spring. It can be put back in 100% original condition with about an hours work. The truck has the 4 cylinder engine in it and while I assume its original, I can't swear to it. Someone moved the battery from under the floorboard set up to under the hood for ease of accessing it. It could easily be moved back. I believe the wood in the bed floor to be the original. As you can see in the photo taken of the bed from the rear, the bed is straight, no big dings or rough treatment. For some reason someone removed the emergency brake lever. I have it and its in good condition. But, the two bolts that hold it on under the floorboard were removed. The brake lever goes with it and it too can be put back on and returned to original condition with an hour or so with an afternoon's labor. Lastly, someone has also made a rear bumper for it out of angle iron. You can see it in the photos. It looks OK and since it was probably a 50's addition, I was going to leave it. The tires on the truck were put on it in the 60's and they're still good. This truck never sat outside and therefore the tires didn't dryrot and deterioriate in the sun as fast as most tires do. I was never afraid to drive it with these tires since these are rather low speed vehicles (50 mph). Again, I doubt there are many trucks of this vintage out there in as good of original condition as this one. If you like these era trucks and don't want a shiny, bondo'ed one with a bunch of repo parts (and maybe fiberglass fenders), this is your chance. I have used this truck on several occasions at election time (I'm an elected Judge in Kentucky) and its a real eye catcher and crowd pleaser. I really don't wish to sell it but I have 3 buildings full of cars, trucks and antiques of all kinds. Some things have to go to make room. More photos will be added but I forgot and left the flash drive they are on in another location. These photos were on my phone that you see here. The reserve is reasonable for a truck in this condition. I will also be making a trip west to California in the next couple of months. I could possibly haul this truck west for the purchaser for a fee (not too bad a fee either). I'll be traveling to Modesto, CA. Please let me know any questions you may have. You can reach me on my cell by voice or text at: Two Seven Zero - Seven Six Five - Nine Five Four Zero A $500 deposit is required within 2 days of auction end. Balance due within 7 days or unless other arrangements are made. I've tried to describe this vehicle the best I can. You are welcome to come and view it in person, drive it, test it out, crawl under and around it, and so on. I'm located about 50 miles south of Louisville and about 5 miles east of I-65. Because this is not a new vehicle, I don't make any warranties on it and its sold as is. A number of years ago I sold an older vehicle and about a week after the gent purchased it he called and said a tire blew and wondered if I would be willing to pay for another tire......if you buy this truck, the tires and other things are yours.....and you're responsible to repair or replace them. Its a fun truck that I wouldn't be afraid to start across the US in. It would just take you a while to get there! On Aug-11-18 at 21:45:18 PDT, seller added the following information: CORRECTION - The truck has a 6 cyl engine, not 4 as I stated (I must have had a Model T on my mind thats sitting beside it). I assume the engine is original but can't swear that it is. If not, its a 6 cyl chevy engine like what came in the truck from the factory. On Aug-12-18 at 10:56:47 PDT, seller added the following information: ADDITIONAL INFO: Thanks for the interest in the '46. It will be at over 1000 page views today and already has 55 watchers. I have had several calls, texts and emails. To answer some of the recurring questions I thought I'd post here. Here are the questions that have been asked by many: Q - What condition are the fenders in?A - The front fenders are near perfect. Paint scratches are the major thing. There is a ding (dent) on the passenger side fender that is right at the point where the door opens and if the catch isn't on the door it would bump the fender. I'm sure this is what happened. I've never tried to pop it out but its easy to get to from inside the fender. Its hard to see in the photos I have posted. The rear fenders have had some body work done on them. Not major work and they don't appear to have ever been "crunched" or badly damaged. They are solid. No rust out or patching done on them. A good body man could have them in great shape with a days work. My plan was to have the rear fenders worked over and then have them and the front fenders repainted with a low gloss finish to match the low gloss on the red body (due to the paint's age). But, the fenders look quite good as they are. I'm just a bit of a perfectionist and would like them to be "perfect" without damaging the originality of the truck. Q - Does the engine smoke?A - I've never noticed any smoke from the engine. The engine doesn't have great oil pressure at an idle but it picks up well while driving. I think this is a bit of the nature of these old 6 cylinders. Q - Is the tailgate original?A - I'm sure it is. Q - What is the condition of the grille?A - Good for an original. You can see a few places where its had some dings that have been pulled out but its one of those types that at 20 ft it looks great. If you get up to 2 feet and give it a really close look you can see a few places........but this thing is over 70 years old! I hope I just make it there! Q - You mention someone has added the rear bumper and its a piece of angle iron, tell more about it.A - The rear "bumper" has been replaced with a piece of angle iron. Its about 3" by 3" and has a hole in the center to use as a hitch. It has a piece of flat iron that's been welded on it attaching it to the bed. Whoever did it did a neat job and its probably a 1950's vintage item. I was going to leave it as it doesn't seriously detract from the truck and looks "right". The way the truck is parked in the building its difficult to get behind it to take a photo. I was going to pull it out and take a photo but the battery was down. If you look in the first photo of the truck parked in front of the Lincoln Boyhood cabin you can see the angle iron on the rear. Q - Front bumper OK?A - Its good and straight. There is a few places on it that it possibly had some surface rust and someone has put some silver (aluminum?) paint on those places. Q - Do all gauges work, etc?A - As far as I know everything on the truck works. I know for sure the fuel, oil pressure, generator and temp gauges work. The speedometer works. The heater and heater fan works. The defroster works (I can't tell you if the hoses that connect to the defroster vents are in good condition or not......they tend to deteriorate but aren't too hard to replace). The windshield easily cranks in and out. The cowl vent opens and closes. The windshield wiper works and even the speed adjustment works on it. Lights all work as well. Its all original and is still a 6v system. Q - Does it still have the spare tire? A - Not sure. I've been under the truck a time or two but haven't noticed. It does still have the engine crank that could be used to crank the engine by hand. Its in the floorboard. On Aug-13-18 at 21:45:38 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks again for the interest in the '46. 1400 page views and 100 viewers. I have been asked to post a few more photos showing the rear fenders as I mentioned they had some body work done on them. I've posted both fenders (had to post photos on a single page) and the area where the work was done. It appears to be a place where someone pecked a dent out from inside the fender. I pecked on it with my knuckle and it sounds like solid steel. Its minor for a truck this age but I mentioned the spot and wanted to show as much as possible. I was also asked to post a photo of the rear wheel. The tire size is 6.70-15. A request was made to post a photo of the fuel filler and the area directly below it. You'll see that in the photos I placed on the single page (although the photo may be turned sideways). While on my phone taking photos I noticed that I had some from when I had the seat out having it covered. You'll notice the one that shows the fuel tank. Its dirty and dusty but the tank is bright and shiny. If cleaned up it would almost look new. I had also snapped a photo of the area directly behind the tank at the back of the cab. While its very dusty and dirty, as you can see in the photo there is absolutely no deterioration or rust in this area. I've seen these trucks that have holes eaten through them. This one doesn't even have surface rust!On Aug-13-18 at 21:53:43 PDT, seller added the following information: Another question came in. Does the horn work? Yes it does. Just push the button in the center of the steering wheel and it blows like it did when new.On Aug-15-18 at 14:52:56 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had a question asked about the Title. The truck is titled in Kentucky. The title is clear with no liens, loans, etc. The truck has been insured with Hagerty Ins. for the last few years. On Aug-16-18 at 05:42:24 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had a question asked about payment. As stated in the ad, a $500 deposit is due at auction close. On the balance, I would prefer cash (who wouldn't) but would consider other forms of payment such as cashier's check or even personal check with proper time for the check to clear before vehicle pickup/shipping. This can be discussed with the purchaser. So, if you buy the truck we will talk before final payment is made to determine the best method for both of us. I DO NOT want payment on the balance made with PayPal. Also, I have no way to accept credit cards. SHIPPING - Here are some locations I have to travel to pick up items and if you live along this route or could meet along this route I may be able to work out hauling of the truck for you. My fee would be very reasonable (much cheaper than a commercial hauler): From Central Kentucky to the St. Louis, Kansas City and then McPherson, KS area From Central Kentucky to Modesto, CA. I can take a Southern Route on I-40 or a Northern Route on I-70 west from Kansas City and then I-15 south to California I will also have a friend making a delivery to me from the central PA area. He could probably haul it from my place to PA or points in between. Maybe some other possibilities that I can discuss with the purchaser. But, the ones above are certain destinations I'll travel. On Aug-17-18 at 21:19:56 PDT, seller added the following information: I had to take some photos this evening for one of the bidders and noticed something I wanted to post here. I had listed the mileage as 65000. However, that is incorrect. That is the approx. mileage on a '40 Chevy pickup that's sitting in the same building. The mileage on the odometer of the '46 is around 27,000 - 28,000. Now, I have no idea if this is the actual mileage, if you should add 100k to it, or whatever. So, I'll need to say the mileage is actually unknown. If this is of concern to anyone who has bid on the truck, feel free to pull your bid. Thanks.
