Vehicle Detail

2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 1.9L Wagon, manual transmission with 183k miles Oceanic Green Pearl Metallic Paint. Tan Cloth Interior This TDI wagon has been my daily driver since 2011 and it has been thoroughly maintained throughout my ownership. I love this TDI, but we bought an electric car and this is the car we chose to sell. The car is in very solid shape and runs great. I would rate the car’s mechanical, exterior and interior all easily at 7/10, much better than average for vehicle of its age. Almost completely stock, the only thing I can think of is the upgraded silicone vacuum lines. I’ve gotten the same excellent mpg throughout the 7 years I’ve been driving the wagon. I believe this indicates that the engine is in great shape and there’s almost no motor oil loss between changes. My average fuel economy has been right at 40 mpg combined city/highway. My best tank was 52mpg and my worst was 37mpg. I typically drive 600 miles on a tank with a little over one gallon remaining when I fill up. These issues do not affect drivability or reliability. I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere in its current condition. With these in mind you should be able to buy with confidence, knowing that there will be no surprises. The purchase of this vehicle includes a complete new-in-box LUK dual mass clutch & flywheel kit. The current clutch may need to be replaced to reduce vibration. The car vibrates (shudders) when starting to move in reverse, once in motion there is no vibration. I have replaced several suspension components and engine/tranny mounts to reduce this vibration, but have not been able to completely eliminate it. My last guess at the source would be that the vibration is coming from the clutch (based on research and having replaced every other suspected component). As the car is now, the vibration is minor and the clutch does not slip. I have been driving it for probably over three years like this. I cannot remember when it started. Check engine light comes on due to a glow plug fault. The car starts perfectly in any temperature and all four glow plugs check out fine. My research indicates this is most likely due to differences in resistance within the glow plug wiring harness. The ECU is not built to detect a bad glow plug; it just compares the voltage between all four plugs and triggers a fault if the voltages are far enough apart. Again, this is just an annoyance (having the engine light on), the glow plugs are fine and the car always starts quickly and smoothly. There is some rust on the bottom of the driver and passenger quarters and rockers just behind the front wheel arches. This is a common issue and VW offered to replacement quarter panels in Jetta’s after the warrantee period, however the previous owner did not have them replaced and when I purchased the car VW was not offering free replacement. The front tires are worn unevenly. The tires passed inspection and still have tread, but I would recommend replacing them and getting an alignment within the next 5-10k miles. The uneven wear was caused by misalignment when the lower control arm bushings were replaced. I have since manually aligned the front end, but would get a professional alignment when the tires need to be replaced.
