Vehicle Detail
I'm offering my Altra A1 kit car for sale. It's time to try something else. I bought this kit from Altra Imports in Portland Ore. It was one of about 8 imported by the company before they decided not to import any more and closed their business. It must be disclosed that this is not an Ariel Atom. ya, right. The company insisted I not represent this as an Ariel Atom. They did not have the rights to use that name in the U.S. and so therefore it is NOT an Ariel Atom. All that being said I defy anyone to show me the difference between this car and an Ariel Atom 3. Inspect the welds, the geometry, the dimensions etc. and there is no difference. Except the price. I had this car shipped to me in Vermont as a "roller" from Portland Ore. and then began to look for a donor Civic S K20Z3 with LSD 6 speed transmission. I found one locally with the help of a co-worker who knew this engine. He insisted to me it had probably 20 to 24,000 miles and it came out of a 2011 Civic S. I have no evidence that this is correct but I have no reason to doubt it. During my search for the engine I was in contact almost weekly with the State of Vermont DMV who came to my home at least 3 times to inspect my build and help me to comply with the requirements of their statutes regarding "reconstructed and/ or special motor vehicles, which includes "kit cars". I had the certificate of origin, but I still needed a VIN which after complying they issued and stamped the VIN in the frame. After the VIN I still needed a title which they issued and I have in hand. Ebay wouldn't allow me to enter the real VIN. It didn't have enough digits and kicked it back. The VIN is VT 132108 The car is titled as a "passenger car" which is very important and has no restrictions as to registration or title transfer. AND after that I needed to comply with the State of Vermont inspection regulations and pass all aspects of the state inspection manual. It took 2 years. I was on first name basis with the DMV inspector and her lieutenant by this time as you can imagine. They informed me that the State of Vermont was lazy or ignorant and just simply adopted the national standards for kit car and homebuilt compliance. This means this car should have no problems complying in any state. I did all the work in that regard. The state even did OBD II compliance check. All passed their stringent requirements. During this time I located the engine and installed it along with the electrics, gauges etc. etc.. The car is equipped with an upgraded steering rack, Honda K-Pro installed in the computer...$950 half shafts by Insane Shafts. Auto meter gauges. Wilwood 4 piston brakes with 11 inch rotors on the front. 2 Piston wilwoods on rear with 11 inch rotors. 155/50r 15 Dunlop Direzza II tires on front. 215/40r 17 Dunop Direzza II rear. Sparko Isetto Gara wheels all around. All corners are equipped with Bilstein shocks and Hypercoil coilovers. Four point Schroth racing harnesses both sides. This car shares all dimensions, geometry etc. from a factory Ariel Atom 3. Bolt on any part you want from a factory Ariel Atom. I retired, moved to Florida and brought the car with me. It was a 10 minute job getting the car retitled and registered in Florida. After 2 years here I have never been hassled by the Po Po and I drive it around town all the time. I've put 2200 miles on it. I have never tracked the car but am very tempted. I had no problem getting insurance for the car. Grundy happily insures it for me as long as I keep it garaged while not in use. So here it is. I'm going to sell this car not because I don't love it, but like I mentioned it may be time to do something else.I'm not going to try to be ridiculous about the price, but if someone wants an Ariel Atom for a little more than half the price of a used 2013 car that won't give you registration nightmares or insurance nightmares then this might be the car for you. A car fax report will not return results from a state issued VIN. There are not enough digits and will not return a report. BTW My starting price is far south of what I've got into it. Thanks for looking. Please feel free to contact me regarding inspecting this car. Serious potential buyers of course are free to drive it too.I will respond to serious non frivolous questions from serious people.
