Vehicle Detail
This 1966 BMW R50/2 has a unique history. In the 60's, BMW motorcycles were imported to the Philippines by Hahn Manila. In order to save on tariff fees, the motorcycles were disassembled on the mainland, brought in as parts, then reassembled and sold. It was common for the frame and engine numbers to not match, and this bike typifies that. Frame: 638056, Engine 561186. The new owners also personalized their bikes with accessories that were not found elsewhere. Many of these covers and plates have "engine turning" designs on them. Please look at the photos and follow the link below to watch the detailed video of the bike. You will also hear it run. youtube.com/watch?v=zOppBub26oU This R50 was shipped to America by a U.S. Soldier in the early 1980's. As the story was told to me, he rode it home, then proceeded to "borrow" parts from it to use on another /2, and it was never registered or ridden. The fact that this bike still has the 1982 Philippines license plate on it would tend to validate to story. Key pieces such a footpeg, cables, and the throttle assembly were missing when I acquired this bike. I have since replaced them. To get it running, I replaced the missing parts, removed and cleaned the carbs, cleaned and flushed out the tank, and installed new fuel lines and filters. After cycling the kick starter several times to get some oil circulating, I pushed the key in, ticked the Bings, and it started on the third kick. Before taking it for a short ride, I replaced the driveshaft boot, front brake and clutch cables. It transported me back to 1977, when I bought my first R50! This bike will need to be thoroughly gone through before any extended riding. I feel it is an excellent starting point to keep as an unrestored runner(my preference) or a total resto. That is for the next owner to decide. I will include with the bike the following parts: A new battery, wheel hub covers that need restoring, an EverBest petcock, and some carb gaskets. It still needs the battery hooked up, and the left handlebar switch sourced and installed. This bike will be sold with a New Hampshire Registration and a Bill of Sale. These will get you a Title and Reg in any State. I WILL NOT arrange shipping, but I will make myself available to the shipper of your choosing. If you have less than 5 feedback, you MUST contact me prior to bidding, or your bid will be rejected and you will be blocked from bidding. Sorry. This bike is advertised locally and I reserve the right to cancel the auction at any time. Thanks, and Good Luck bidding.
