Vehicle Detail
Very original RARE California Special GT/CS equipped with the highly-desirable first year upgrade 302ci/230hp 4V (4bbl) J code V8 engine with C4 SelectShift “Cruise-O-Matic” transmission. Not a Clone! This is the Real Deal. Unmolested and fully restored multi-trophy winner. Very Rare and under the radar car (until recently). One of only 3867 GT/CS Mustangs produced and exclusively in 1968 with less than <1200 estimated remaining today. Provenance as well as photographic documentation of 2003 correct-color repaint and restoration. What Exactly is a GT/CS Mustang?: Based on pressure applied on Ford from several high-volume sales CA dealers, the limited-production 1968-only GT/CS was developed utilizing Shelby styling cues and parts. The GT/CS cars were all coupes (no convertibles or fastbacks) built solely at the San Jose Plant and primarily for the rabid CA Mustang market and included an extensive media blitz declaring such (“California Made It Happen!” slogan). However, despite being well received on Feb 15, 1968 at the Century Plaza Hotel unveiling, sales were not strong leading to only 3867 of the planned 5000 cars produced. Furthermore, to move the cars other markets were added to include Kansas City, Dallas, Salt Lake, Phoenix, and Canada (still with “California Special” script). Only six cars have been confirmed to have been sold via DSO 72 (San Jose) to Hawaii. This car is one and is included in the California Special Registry (www.californiaspecial.com) Key Identifiers of GT/CS Mustangs: Fiberglass Trunk Lid and Rear Quarter Extensions. Same as 1968 Shelby and manufactured by same subcontractor A.O. Smith, Ionia, Michigan. Distinctive Horizontal Tail Lights. Same as 1965 Thunderbird/1968 Shelby. Unique Pop-Off Gas Cap. Similar to 1968 Mustang GT or Shelby with running horse inset (instead of GT or Cobra Emblem). Side Scoops. Similar to 67-68 Shelby with GT/CS decal. “California Special” script on rear quarters. Front fender “horse and bars” emblem on regular 1968 Mustangs deleted. Body Striping. Unique. GT style. Black, white, red, or blue depending on paint and interior combination. Blacked-Out Front Grill. No chrome surround or running horse emblem. Marchal or Lucas Fog Lights (This car has the Lucas variety). Quarter-Turn Competition Style Hood Locks. What Makes This Car Stand Out Above Others? ORIGINAL ENGINE: First and foremost. The original, iconic 302ci/230hp 4V engine with 3.00 ratio rearend is still located where it was born and running stronger than ever with only minor performance tweaks added during 2003 rebuild/restoration to include Edelbrock Aluminum Intake, Holley Carburetor, and Tri-Y Headers. Driveline and all primary component parts original and correct. Any and all parts replaced retained and with the car. ALL sheetmetal original to car. RARITY: Limited to only 3867 units over 5.5 month production run and only in 1968. One of only 6 cars known to have been originally shipped to Hawaii. This is the only car shipped to the now defunct Castner Ford Dealership in Wahiawa, HI. First year for the 4V 302ci/230hp V8 engine. Only 962 1968 GT/CS received this engine w/most receiving the 6-cylinder 200ci or predecessor 2V 289ci/195hp V8. DESIREABLE AND HIGH OPTION CAR: This car features: Built May 15, 1968 Correct color Wimbleton White (M/Ford 1619-A) w/Red Stripe and Red interior. Factory “Selectaire” AC car.
