Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a 2002 Honda Odyssey that has been loved by the same family since the day it was born (there was even a deposit down on it before it even arrived at the dealership!) Some accomplishments of this particular car are as follows: living in 3 states, completing a cross country road trip (last year to be exact), countless trips back and forth to college, and above all else, hitting a 22 mph over the limit speeding ticket. She’s seen a lot of good memories, and with a little TLC could have some good years left. The car was purchased by my parents back in August of 2002 at White Allen Honda of Dayton, Ohio. It made the move to Virginia with us back in 2006 and was lightly driven by my mother up until 2009 when I began driving the car. At the time I was finishing up high school, so it stayed registered to, insured by, and maintained by my parents up until it made the move to California with me last summer (history report should show a second owner, me, in CA, July 2015). The car has been dealer maintained most of its life, and seen a couple of independent mechanics more recently. I mentioned it being owned by us since it was new and I have a folder with every service record including the original window sticker. It’s spent the last year commuting up and down I-280 and the 101 between San Francisco and Silicon Valley and hasn’t let me down. Its been a good run but I think its finally time to say goodbye. She needs some work, and a new owner who’s willing to give her that. Most notably, the transmission needs work, see “Transmission” below. Third gear whines, and while it has done so for the last 5 or 6 years, its gotten worse within the last year. The car still runs and drives just fine (I was still commuting with it last week), but I believe that will need fixing before too long. Some other issues recently pointed out to me are that the engine mounts are worn and the front lower control arm assemblies have cracking and loose bushings. I’ve copied the notes from the last few services below. Please read them for details. Car Overview: Exterior:About what you’d expect from a 13 and a half year old family car. Its in pretty good shape overall with no spots where the clear coat has worn off. Its far from perfect though. The sides are scraped up a bit, mostly from mishaps with a tight driveway and side-entry garage. There’s a little spot on the very back of the driver’s side where somebody backed into the side of the car in a rest-stop parking lot. Miscellaneous scrapes and dings all around. Headlights are cloudy. The front bumper cover was replaced in the Spring of 2014 after a minor fender bender in a parking garage. I struck the back wheel of another vehicle at maybe 5 mph. The repair was done by a local shop. More recently I struck a raccoon on a dark backroad and it pulled the bumper slightly down on the driver’s side, creating a bit more of a gap beneath the headlight (see photos). The window on the driver’s side sliding door was replaced about a month ago. I found it shattered one morning and my insurance covered it. The windshield also recently had a small rock chip filled. There is a minor crack spreading out from the chip but the repair-person assured me that the new seal will prevent the crack from spreading further. Interior:Super clean for its age. I was an only child growing up and this car didn’t spend nearly as much time as other comparable vehicles did driving many children all over. There is of course normal wear and tear on high wear areas such as the driver’s seat, armrests, knobs and buttons, etc. It’s had extra floor mats over the factory ones for its whole life so the carpets are actually in great condition. Cupholders in the center tray table had little rubber inserts that dried up and fell out years ago, so they don’t really work so well but the one that pulls out from the dashboard, as well as the ones mounted to the sides of the back seats work just fine. The middle seats are removable and the back bench folds into the floor. The front windows work but the passenger side is slightly slower than the driver’s. Windows on the sliding doors are stationary. The very back windows used to pop open as vents, but the motors gave out a few years ago so they’re permanently closed now. Radio and CD player are both in working condition. There is also an after-market Alpine EX-10 iPod+Bluetooth system installed. It’s a little bit finicky but it works ok for streaming music over Bluetooth. The device also includes a 30-pin iPod connector in the glovebox. Wheels/Tires:Tires are a set of almost new Michelin Premier A/S. They were installed just under 10k miles ago in September 2015 at Costco. Rims themselves are in functional condition. There is nothing wrong with them except that aesthetically they’re a little scraped up and have some brake dust stains. Maintenance:As mentioned above, the car was very well cared for. I have a full set of service records, and the oil was always changed at about 3-5k mile intervals. Brakes pads and rotors are all due to for replacement, the steering wheel shakes under heavy braking and my mechanic said the rotors are corroded. Transmission:Also as mentioned above, the transmission whines in third gear. Its well documented that Odysseys of this era have a weak point in the transmission that fails. This one has yet to actually fail (knock on wood) but I feel that it may be imminent. The noise has been present for years but its only within the last year or so that it’s gotten significantly worse. My mechanic informed me that the transmission fluid is dirty and has a strong odor, but also felt that changing it could likely worsen the problem. Notable recent service notes: 2/18/16:- Recommend front lower control arm assembly both due to cracking loose bushing- All engine mounts are worn causing engine shifting and noises- Recommend front and rear brakes due to corroded pads and edges of the rotors- Recommend serpentine belts and tensioner due to excessive rust present- Transmission fluid has a strong odor. Transmission flush is NOT recommended. 10/20/15:- Replaced A/C relay, A/C compressor relief valve, and recharged system. - Vehicle is making a hissing noise from left front and inside cabin. When starting in the morning it is loud and when revved there was a puff of smoke or steam from under the hood and a loud grinding noise. - Tech found the A/C relay stuck on. Compressor relief valve opened from compressor overpressure. - (undocumented) Service advisor mentioned to me on pickup that they noticed extra grease/oil buildup in the engine compartment but were not sure of the source or cause. 9/16/15:- 4 new tires, Michelin Premier A/S 7/8/15:- Passed CA SMOG Inspection- Recommend timing belt, water pump, rollers, coolant, and drive belts- Recommend 4 new struts- Recommend brakes soon due to excessive corrosion. Pads at 5mm. 5/4/15:- A/C stopped working briefly during cross-country road trip- No problems found (see 10/20 above) 4/17/15:- Car checked for safety for a cross-country road trip- Power steering fluid dirty, otherwise car is good 7/14/11:- Transmission fluid changed at 99,072 mi 6/3/09:- Timing belt changed at 82,021 mi These notes list the known issues and notable services of the car. I give these in the interest of full disclosure on known problems, there could be more problems I am unaware of. The car also includes the original owner’s manual, 3 key sets with remotes (gray one is a valet key), and a folder with service records back to when it was new. The car is being sold in AS-IS condition. CA residents, the car has registration through July 2016 and passed smog in July 2015. (2/28- I am obtaining a current smog certificate this week for the sale and will update the listing once that has been completed.) Please message me before bidding or your bid will be cancelled. I welcome all questions, and local buyers are free to set an appointment with me to come see the car in person. I am keeping it parked at my office currently in Mountain View, CA. I will accept payment via cashier’s check (at a bank) or PayPal and will release the title only once I have received full payment. I also require a deposit of $250 within 24 hours of the auction closing. Buyer is responsible for arranging pickup or shipping. Thanks for your interest and happy bidding! On Mar-03-16 at 14:56:52 PST, seller added the following information: 3/3- CA smog check was completed yesterday. Certificate is valid for 90 days beginning 3/2/2016. Also one issue I forgot to mention above is that getting the hood to latch can be tricky. It typically takes a couple of tries, but I've not had an issue where I couldn't get it to latch.
