Vehicle Detail

This car was originally made in New Jersey, but ended up in San Marcos California in 1979, and by then it had extensive corrosion. In the 1980s it became a father-son project car, but the body work was incredibly poor quality and the son was more interested in using drugs. In the mid-90s this car was in the possession of a small, independent auto painter who ended up serving 2 months of community service for violating EPA regulations and was abandoned in an auto body facility in Escondido California. I took legal ownership of the car in the late 1990s and began the process of restoring the car the right way. That meant drilling out the spot welds in the cowl to split it apart and replace the outer pieces with the large vent holes. When the floor pans were welded in, I tested the strength of the welds by first making only four plug welds, and applying all of my weight, and I tried to break the welds by stomping on the panel next to the welds. When I was sure they would hold I continued to weld. The insides of the floor pans were butt welded to the tunnel in the center. The body was strengthened with torque boxes between the inner frame rails and outer rockers panels, and the roof was reinforced with 2 inch wide flat bar curved to match the roof and welded to the body. The taillight panel had too much corrosion and body filler, so those welds were grinded down, and a new replacement piece was plug welded in. Numerous patch panels were butt welded into the body, and great care was made to prevent warpage of the metal. The springs for the trunk were missing, and those were too hard for me to find, since they're different on the fastback models, so I modified the hinges to use a modified rod from a coupe and a gas strut from the glass hatch of a Chevy Blazer. The trunk rod seems to be missing right now, but it's very easy to modify a rod from a coupe to fit. There is a little bit of MIG welding and fabrication work left. You're not just bidding or buying on the body shown in the pictures: there are lot s of parts included that are not shown, which is nearly every body part including all fastback only interior parts. A hood is not included. I'd like to keep this car, but I can't afford to buy a truck and trailer, and store those some place, in addition to financing the rest of the restoration. Part of the reason I'm selling this is because I've moved from San Diego to Seattle, and part of it is my lack of finances. At this point, a lot of the labor intensive work is done, and it's going to require a lot of money to pay for what this car needs. I haven't lost interest in the car, I haven't given up, and I haven't realized I made some major error in the restoration and that it can't be restored or that I'd have to re-do a lot of the work. Whoever buys this will have my full support in terms of honesty about the condition of the car, what it needs, and what it will take to make it great again.
