Vehicle Detail
1979 Porsche 928 Euro professionally done hybrid conversion to chevrolet 350 small block that is built hi performance. This thing moves and I've had other stock Porsche powered 928 cars and I'd say this is faster. Maybe not in the top end but 0-60 it has very very powerful acceleration. I do believe it is faster than my last 315/330? hp euro car. This car has NOT been abused either. I've layed into the throttle a few times to see just how quick it is and can tell you I've never floored it or raced it or anything like it. I'm in my 50's and have driven this very gently. This is my 4th 928. I had never seen one until a few years ago. Saw one at a local show and was in love. Very very cool car IMO. So I started hunting for one. I bought one after another and they had sooo many issues related to the motor and various other things that I was about to swear them off when I heard about the 928 chev conversions. This has been a blessing. Seriously, if you want to avoid 1.) mechanics who won't touch the 928 2.) super pricey parts 3.) super pricey repair 4.) Breaking down and finding no parts available 5.) Thrust bearing issues THEN get a conversion. You won't be sorry. My mechanic loves this car. He hated my previous 928s and finally just turned them away. And I might add he is a great mechanic. I learned my final 928 lesson when I bought a super swell 86 928 for top dollar and the rear thrust bearing/flexplate literally ATE the motor even after having regular maintenance on it. No more 928's for me unless they are chevrolet conversions, period. I am only selling this because I'm planning another project and need to raise cash for it. Also I have another 928 that I'm going to do the conversion on. The body: SUPER straight and dent free. No signs of any previous damage and SOLID. If you want a great 928 body this is it. Previous owner installed marker lights and did drill holes for those but they could be welded shut and closed again easily. Door locks work nice, all doors open nicely, latches NOT sloppy as typical with these cars. The motor: The motor is BUILT hi-performance. Has an Edelbrock 4 bbl carb and intake too. Headers also. Motor runs great, no smoke, no knock. It DOES need the fan situation looked at. Needs better cooling then again it's been very warm here lately too. I do believe if someone wired in the electric fan to run steady the problem would be solved. Powerful motor has no problem whatsoever moving this car WITHOUT the headaches of a stock 928. The transmission: Has a small leak but doesn't leak all fluid, only a bit at the top it seems. Shifts good but not as smooth as could be. I think it needs a little extra fluid and maybe a filter. Seems okay/good and does not slip but doesn't always slip into 3rd smoothly. It probably is just a little low on fluid as it did the same thing last year until I added maybe 1/2 a quart. Then it shifted great again. This year I've only had it out a few days and haven't checked the fluid yet but over the winter it leaked maybe a pint in total. The car has 996 wheels I added and they were pricey. The insides of the rims have lost some chrome but you can't easily see that without looking hard. I DO have a nice original front spoiler I bought for another 928 that I would be willing to part with for $300 extra. High bidder let me know if you want. Miles are over 100K but believe the odometer not working correctly. Also it is in kilometers as it's a euro. needs:Seems like the electric fan doesn't kick in as much as it should. I'd almost bet it's the connection in the fuse panel. Those always need a good cleaning. 928 cars are known for electrical issues and more often than not it's just dirty grounds or connections in the fuse box, pass side. Easy access. Anyway I'm driving the car daily now and have noticed it gets a bit hotter than it should. Hasn't overheated but seems warm on the gauge. I open the hood and the electric fan isn't running. Soon as it starts running the car cools. So I think the connection for the fan may be the suspect. I only drive it about 10 miles per day. UPDATE: I found the electric fan plug had come apart. I put the two connectors together and now the fan works. Looks like the cooling problem is solved. Also took a look at the fuel system and think I found something there also. The connectors on the electric fuel pump are a bit dirty and need a cleaning. I will try to do that before auction ends. UPDATE 2: Today I drove it about 40 minutes and the electric fan is now working great, car is staying much cooler and it ran out just great! Seems like the carb is working right now also since I messed with the electric fuel pump connectors. I think it wasn't always getting the correct fuel pressure because of the loose wire connector. After 40 minutes of driving I turned it off and hit the key again and it roared to life instantly. I looked at the fuse panel again and many of the fuses are really old and I think just putting in new fuses with cleaner connections would be a good thing. I found the fuel pump fuse was very old and swapped it with the correct 25 amp new fuse and now the pump is working perfect. Sometimes the carb loads up a little but I believe a little bit of adjusting should handle that. Runs clean doesn't smoke. This motor is sound. The car came with the recaro seats but I swapped them out for a later model seat and they both need recovering. The rest of the interior is pretty nice. Rear interior panels were recovered nicely. Capets, door panels etc all pretty nice. Dash has a couple of cracks but doesn't look bad. It has a cd stereo system and I think it's a pioneer? Works great but could use a better set of speakers IMO. They are good and all that but could be better. Exhaust is NEW. No tail pipe at the very end but the rest is clean and new. NOT loud and not too quiet. Just right. Front tires almost new. One rear has a very very slow leak. This is a turn key car that needs very very minor attention. Turns heads everywhere it goes too. Sold as-is.
