Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my low mile 1989 W250 4X4 diesel. This truck spent its entire life in Oregon until last summer. The previous owner was 80 years old and this was her Dad’s truck and she inherited it some time ago. It was driven here from Oregon and pulled a car trailer with a 1986 Chevy on it. As an eastern Oregon truck it is 100% rust free. Since it has been here I have spent about $2,500 on it to bring it up to date. I am selling it because I bought a 1995 12 valve that I had been trying to buy since last year. I hate selling anything but something must go. I do believe the miles to be correct…the truck was driven sparingly over the last 15 years and the previous owner had given up driving and allowed a caretaker on her property to occasionally use it. The speedometer and odometer function correctly – 1989 is the only year that speedometers were all mechanical –no electronic or VSS system. Anyway – the truck and description speak for themselves. It is a nice truck by any standard especially for being 25 years old. But it certainly shows many signs of use. The following is a detailed description: Mechanical Even though this truck was driven here some 2,500+ miles it needed work when it got here. I installed (4) new courser MXT 10 ply tires and I changed the wheels to a modern, wider wheel. Factory wheels are 6”and too narrow for modern 265/75/16 tires. These are 7 ½ inch. I also had installed new pads, shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and brake booster. The axle seals were replaced and wheel bearings and races were packed or replaced. Front rubber brake lines were also replaced (they were cracking). The repair shop that did this did not turn the front rotors (how stupid), so there is still some pulsation when you stop, but it stops fine. I also replaced the battery even though it always started – the battery in it was older and they always fail when you least expect it. I also replaced all the battery cable ends. I had the rear U bolts replaced and added 2” blocks so it sits like a 92/93 which had taller rear blocks and sat with a nicer stance. Early first gen Dodges always sit too low in back. Springs are all good, no cracks and it sits level side to side. The shocks are in good working condition. The tie rod ends, drag link and steering arm arms are all in good shape and I also had the truck aligned. I have owned about 15 of these 1st gen Dodges so I am used to some steering play but this truck has very little…LESS than what I would consider average. This truck starts in an instant all the time – warm or cold and even if it has sat for an extended period of time. The grid heaters function properly. The wait –to-start light, RWAL light and water in fuel light all come on at the appropriate time and go off at the appropriate time. I haven’t needed it but the block heater works. The motor runs strong – no misses or smoke even cold. It carries plenty of oil pressure and all gauges work and indicate normal functions. The thermostat works and the truck runs at normal temps. I added a volt meter because 1989 only had ammeters. The transmission shifts correctly and the 4X4 works as designed with no noises or growls. There is no drive train slop going from reverse/drive/park. This truck has a 727 transmission ,a tough, reliable and inexpensive unit. With the Gear Vendors overdrive it will get around 21-22 MPG. I called Gear Vendors and they supplied me with the parts to service it and a new owner’s manual – it works perfect and doesn’t slam into overdrive like some. These G.V. unit sell new for over $3,000 new and you will rarely see a used one for much under $1,800-$2,000. They are highly sought after and very reliable...rated for up to 1000 HP. Parts, service and technical support are readily available from Gear Vendors. I did service the Gear Vendors overdrive when I got the truck...its easy and cheap. I have serviced the truck... checked all fluids, changed the oil, oil filter, etc. It did not use any oil on its journey back here and has no blowby at the draft tube underneath or at the fill cap. This is the simplest of all the Cummins trucks – If it has fuel, air and 12 volts it runs. No TPS, no PCM, no ECM and it still runs an external voltage regulator unlike the 91-5-93’s. All U joints in the drive shafts and axles are good. Does not leak or use coolant. No leaks in engine transmission, T-case or differentials. Will leave a drip sometimes in the vicinity of the vacuum/power steering pump, but not doing so currently. Lock-out hubs are the Selectro Heavy Duty’s available only until 1989 (still available today). Goes in and out of 4X4 correctly. “PRNDL” indicator on gearshift works correctly. Exhaust is in excellent shape – it is a straight pipe, but it’s not loud or obnoxious – sounding like a Cummins should. The truck drives smoothly, no vibrations or pulls (other than brake pulsation previously mentioned) and the driveline is tight and quiet for a 25 year old truck. Body/Frame No rust ever. No rust underneath. Frame, axles and driveline components are all clean. Some time ago it had a cheap “Earl Scheib” type paint job that is still in good shape, but wasn’t a quality job to begin with. No body work was done. There are numerous dings, small dents, touch-up spots and paint imperfections on every panel and most notably on the drivers side bedside. You can’t see them in pictures, but you will definitely see them in person. I am stating this - because almost anything can look great in a picture. It doesn’t’ look as nice “in person”, but it is way better than most and I’m not looking for collector car money for it either – I’ve seen some with these miles bring $20,000 – This isn’t that truck. The doors are still correctly aligned and open and shut and latch correctly. The door hinges and pins are good. The interior of the bed/bed floor is straight, but was drilled for an old-style hitch – no holes in frame. The tailgate is functional, but the spot welds have cracked over the years and it has several spots that are touched up. It still opens/closes okay and stays shut. Bright work, bumpers and trim in good shape. There are some scratches on the chrome of the passenger side mirror and also some scratches, pits in windshield especially the far right ¼ of windshield (passenger side). The rest of glass is okay. If you know old Dodges, you know they rust out along the drip rail on the roof, especially by the windshield – There is NO rust there on this truck . I always check this because its a common problem and very difficult and expensive to fix. I pulled both the tail lights out to inspect the interior of the bed sides…this is where rust always starts and it is corrosion free…nothing even starting. Every nut and bolt and fastener on this truck turns with a wrench or socket…instead of a torch and sawzall like trucks around here. Interior Headliner is intact and in place. Carpet in good shape. Door panels in good shape, but some discoloration on armrests. Dash had some screws in it from an old CB, so I covered it. Also the control unit for the Gear Vendors is mounted on the dash...you can see it in the pictures. The seat sits high and firm, but had some light wear and a 2-3” rip in it on the rear passenger side, so I correctly installed a good fitting seat cover on it. Sun visors are intact and they stay up against the cab roof. The instrument panel is in good condition. 1989 had no head rests on the seat, so they don’t knock your cowboy hat off. The weather stripping, aside from some paint overspray on the outside, is in good condition and not cracking or crumbling. The window belt moldings and door glass run channels are in good condition. Seat belts operate and retract as well as they ever did on these 1st Gens. There is some soiling on the seat belts and some several of the plastic trim pieces that hold up the headliner have cracks in them. Electrical/HVAC A/C is already converted to a 134 A and blows cold and heat blows hot. Blower works on all speeds and air comes out the correct vents. Horn works, dome light works from dash switch and doors. Dash light works, instrument cluster lights work. Work light under hood works. Radio works. Power windows work and operate quickly even in cold. High and low beams, brake, tail and turn signal lights work. License plate light works. Power lock works on passenger door only – driver’s door key only. No cruise control on this truck. Back up lights in reverse don’t work. Unmolested electrical system.... fuse block still in dash under the steering wheel with no telltale burn marks that come with “over-accessorizing”. All Fusible links under hood are original and intact. Summary It has been dependable….I trust it. It has a full tank of fuel in it like every truck and tractor I own. The paint isn’t all that nice, but it is way better than most. (if they have any left). Mechanicals are very good and no rust anywhere. Free and clear Indiana title in my name. U.S. buyers only. Miles are exempt on title like most if not all 20 plus year old trucks. Reserve is reasonable. Not for sale elsewhere. If you live close or want to see it you can. Please bid only if you intend to pay and have the funds to do so. Winning bidder please contact me within 24 hours of auctions end. Full payment in 7 days in cash in person,, wire transfer, bank check okay but truck and title stay until check clears. I will send or fax a copy of the title to the winning bidder. I have receipts for the work I had done. No trades. If you have questions call me at 574-780-8639. Pete. Thanks
