Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1974 Mercedes Benz 450SL. My father bought it in 1997 for $14500 and drove it regularly until he passed away. The car ran great and he drove it everywhere but after he passed away the car just sat for the past few years. I drained the tank, cleaned the filter, the pump and purged the fuel lines. The car starts and idles well. But stumbles when you go to rev it. Im sure some sensors or vacuum lines need to be cleaned or replaced. Car does not overheat. I let it sit and idle for 30 minutes to help run gas and sea foam through the system and the temp gauge never broke much past 175. All gauges do work. Brakes work but are very soft and spongy. Transmission goes into drive. It goes into reverse, but you have to give it a little gas to engage it. Power steering and power brakes work great. Steering is very tight with just a little play in the wheel. Power windows work. AC compressor engages when turned on. But im sure it would need a recharge at the very least. The hard top is in near perfect shape other than the fading paint. I dont recall the soft top ever being used and was told it was brand new when we bought it. But the vinyl window is now oxidized and there is a small tear in the top where one of the top frame members rub a hole in it. Interior is in fair shape except the seats are badly torn. The trunk has a rust hole in it where water easily collects. Small rust bubbles on the passenger side sill. Everywhere else seems to be fine. There is a scratch/dent in the hood and on top of the passenger side fender. See picture for details. It was repainted in the early-mid 2000s. The job itself was good quality with no overspray, excessive orange peel or flaws. But the paint must not of been that good of quality because it doesnt have any luster to it anymore and is very sun faded. The car when it wasnt driven was parked under a carport so why it would be this badly sun faded is unknown. Car also had some front end components replaced by a local shop that specializes in German cars. I dont know what exactly was all replaced but you can see the Bilstein shocks look brand new on the front end. The front tires are also new. This is a no reserve auction with a low starting price. This would make a great project for someone whos always wanted one of these cars but couldnt afford a pristine one. High bidder must arrange transportation to have the car picked up. I may have someone available to deliver it to surrounding states on a flat bed trailer. But you would have to message me for a quote from him.
