Vehicle Detail

1972 Suzuki GT550J GT 550 J EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD CONDITION I owned a blue GT550 just like this that I bought brand new when I was in high school. All the good memories came flooding back when I rode this one for the first time a couple of days ago. This bike rides and sounds just like I remember my original '72 model. When I bought this bike in 2007, I thought my wife and I could re-live some of those good times we had when we were dating in high school. But we divorced in 2009, and as a result I've lost my enthusiasm for owning this bike. So here it is for sale. This is an exceptionally nice 1972 Suzuki GT550 (first year model) that I bought from a collector in Denton, TX in 2007. It has been stored in my dry West Texas warehouse until now. The man I bought it from had stored it in his own indoor warehouse for years prior to my purchase. I don't know any history on this bike, but the condition speaks for itself. I believe it was probably totally restored to original condition and then put into storage. There are several reasons I believe this: First, everything on the bike is close to perfect. The tank and sidecover emblems appear to be NOS. The only thing that keeps the paint from being flawless is one tank scratch. The tires look almost new. The rubber boot between the airbox and carburetors (which is rock-hard on most of these old bikes) is pliable and flexible, and seems new. All of the chrome is in great shape. The engine cases and ram air shrouds have been tastefully polished (not overly). The engine sounds so fresh that I believe it must have been gone through, and that conjecture is supported by some gasket sealer visible here and there on some engine gasket edges. Of course, all of this is only conjecture, because I do not have any history on the bike at all. So what you see is what you get. And what you get is an exceptionally nice looking and nice running first year model GT550. To get it ready to sell, I changed the transmission fluid, topped off the oil injection tank with Honda 2-cycle injection oil, put a battery in it, and some premix in the tank, and it fired right up. It was immediately apparent that the carbs needed cleaning, so without running it any more, I took the carbs off and cleaned the jets. That's all it took to have it running right. After riding it around long enough to be certain that the oil pump was working properly, I drained the premix and put regular gasoline in it. I then test rode the bike for approximately 22 miles, ranging in speeds from 40 mph to 70 mph. I mostly kept the RPMs from 3,000 to 4,500 RPM. I didn't ride it hard, just rode it long enough to be sure everything worked properly. That's all I've done to it, and it probably needs some fine-tuning and TLC to make it perfect. Here are the things that need attention that I know of: The carb jets are clean, and the bike runs right, but I really wasn't able to get the carb bodies as nice as I would like. If I had access to a sonic carb cleaner, I would get them looking new. You might want to do that. The battery is new, and works fine, but it is not the correct one. The neutral light doesn't work. May just be a bulb, or it could be the sending unit. I haven't checked either one. The speedometer and odometer both work, but the trip meter appears to work only sporadically. The tach works fine. Cosmetically, it is about as good as a bike this age could be. There is very little corrosion anywhere on the bike. The seat pan looks great, and the pipes are excellent. The right one is great, and the left one has some staining in a few places, but no dents. (see photos) One minor observation: The left pipe seems to be louder than the right one. All the baffles are in place. The rims, fenders, and other chrome are good, with no pitting or corrosion. There is some pitting on the fork caps. The exhaust flanges have minor surface rust. The inside of the fuel tank is very clean, with only minimal specks of rust inside. (see photos) The paint is one tank scratch away from being flawless. See photos. The tank and sidecover emblems appear to be NOS. The turn signals and taillight work, and appear original. I have clear title in hand, and the original Suzuki GT550J owners manual, still in its original clear snap pouch. I have described this bike exactly as it is, to the best of my ability and knowledge. It is a 42 year-old motorcycle, so it is sold as-is. All of my statements are my observations of its apparent condition, and are not to be construed as a guarantee or warranty of any kind. Winning bidder gets the bike. Bid to win. The winning bidder is to pay a $300 non-refundable deposit via PayPal within one day of the end of the auction. The balance is due by wire transfer or other acceptable method of payment within 3 business days of the end of the auction. The bike cannot be picked up until funds have cleared all banking channels. The purchaser is responsible for any and all shipping arrangements and costs, as well as any taxes, duties, or other related costs. Please message me with any questions. Payment via Wire Transfer is preferred. Cash or Cashiers Check accepted. NOTE-Because Cashiers Checks can be forged, I must cash your Cashiers Check PRIOR to releasing the motorcycle. So, please make sure your Cashiers Check is from a bank with a branch in Lubbock TX, and remember I must present it at the bank during normal banking hours in order to cash it. If you are picking up outside of normal banking hours, you will have to get the Cashiers Check to me in advance so I can cash it beforehand. Same applies for personal checks. Upon winning the auction, please pay a non-refundable $300 deposit through PayPal immediately. The balance is due prior to pick-up. Buyer is responsible for making all shipping arrangements. Pick-up is expected within 2 weeks of auction-end.
