Vehicle Detail
1980 Porsche 928 project car with small block chevy motor installed. The car will run and drive but needs some attention to make it roadworthy. Comes from a no title state (Vermont I believe) so being sold with bill of sale and registration copy for title purposes. Super solid straight southern car with no rust. New seat covers front and rear. New dash pod cover. Needs door panels. Headliner is currently not installed but goes back in fairly easily. The car was converted by a machine shop mechanic and he also installed the chev transmission so you have no motor/trans worries about expensive repairs. Believe me keeping a stock 928 running can be very expensive. The conversion eliminates pretty much all expensive repairs. Trans is auto and shifter needs a little adjusting as it has a very tight throw. Wheels and tires nice. Decent exhaust and brakes. I took the car down a country road for a few miles and it was good but the shifter needs adjustment as it doesn't want to slide into 3rd gear very easy. Tons of low end torque too. I have 2 of these conversions and have been thrilled with them after owning stock 928 cars with super-expensive repairs and that's IF you can find a mechanic who will actually work on them and knows what he's doing. I will never buy another stock 928 again after experiencing the more powerful and easily repaired conversion 928. NO way. Only selling because I cannot enjoy both cars and need the room. No sign of any accident damage anywhere. I believe it's a 82 year car but will have to doublecheck. selling as is. I can get you a shipping quote to anywhere in the lower 48 USA. On Sep-28-14 at 12:13:22 PDT, seller added the following information: Hey everyone...just wanted to add a few things. I will be adding the VIN and more pics today. Also I've received a few negative comments from "purists" who don't appreciate the car because of the swap. For those guys and any others who feel that way I would say save your breath and typing skills for someone else. I have been down BOTH roads...stock 928 and conversion 928 and much much prefer owning a car that is reliable and without all the god-awful expensive repairs that 928s are known for. The last stock 928 I bought came with 2 inches thick folder of repair bills. The poor guy paid out 3K for a transmission alone. I tallied up 7K in repairs he'd paid for and thought I was getting a steal until after owning it for 2 months the (common to 928) torque thrust bearing destroyed the motor even AFTER I myself pulled the inspection cover and released any tension it had. I've had many of these cars and seen similar things. They are expensive to maintain and anybody who wants to argue that needs to take a trip over to the rennslist 928 forum. They will drain your wallet quicker than a lawyer with divorce papers. The cars handle fantastic, look killer and will throw you back in the seat if you so desire. BUT they have to be properly maintained by someone who knows the cars well and labor and parts costs are simply out-of-this-world unless you do a conversion. My everyday mechanic told me working on the conversion is a breeze. Plenty of room to work and no more injection or computer...etc etc...all SIMPLE. He's driven my stock 928s and driven my other 928 conversion and told me the conversion is way quicker. As a matter of fact he also said after driving a stock 928 he couldn't believe how sluggish they were off the line. Not so with a conversion. My other conversion has so much low end torque it's frightening compared to the stock 928. It might not top out like a stock 928 but who needs to drive 150+ MPH anyway? So to potential buyers...be forewarned the Porsche purists will scoff at the car and some may even be rude but if you ever come up against those same guys in their stock 928s at the stoplight YOU will have the last laugh. When I drove this car I was amazed at the low end. You could pull a tree stump with it. If you ever need to visit the mechanic your repair bill will be about 1/4 of what they will pay to be back up and running. Average stock 928 motor rebuild? 10K. Trans? 3K. Also the car CAN be easily returned to stock if you so desire. This is a very inexpensive way to get into a conversion 928 if that's what you are after. It needs some paint work and the motor could probably be tuned up better but you won't find a cheaper converted 928. I looked for a long time for a conversion and bought 2 within a few months of each other. I prefer my other car because it doesn't need anything. I drove it 4 hours straight not too long ago and it is a dream. Best of both worlds. Also it is much quicker than the 315 hp euro car I sold last year. I simply don't have time to work on the car or to drive both. On Sep-30-14 at 17:13:58 PDT, seller added the following information: A couple of extra things to add: I do not have the rear hatch key. The cylinder doesn't latch so you will need to watch ebay for a lock cylinder and key. The hatch lifts right up no problem as is. One side window gasket needs to be better tucked in. Rear quarter windows were upgraded and seals need some final tucking in. Rear interior panels were redone in leather...nice job too. Battery is believed to be about 1 yr old. Tires are in great shape, little wear. Rims real nice too. Rear hatch trim (interior) is off and will need to be reinstalled. Trunk is super solid like the rest of the car. Exhaust is all there and looks good. I have some of the door panel parts. The car has only been started once this summer and will probably need a good going over including checking everything out before trying to drive it. Brakes worked well when I drove it. Headlights work, covers are not installed or painted but they go with car. Suspension feels good and tight. I cannot remember if they added the power steering pump or not but I drove it and it felt good. May be manual steering. Someone who has time and desire to do the finish work could make a killer 928 out of this car.
