Vehicle Detail

BARN FIND – 1978 FJ40, 2F 6 cyl, 4 speed, disk brakes – Clear VA Title. Back Story: Medical bills not covered by insurance are prompting this sale. I've owned 5 FJ40’s in the past. I looked for a long time for this one. I was really expecting to keep it, but I can’t. I found this FJ40 in NC last year. I purchased it from a man who buys old vehicles – some to sell whole and some for parts. It arrived just a few days before I picked it up. It was a very odd find – all indications pointed to 23 years of inactivity. The odometer shows 26,462 miles. The title shows them as original. Is that accurate? I have no idea, but 1978-1990 is only 12 years. It had Nevada tags and Las Vegas service paperwork – and although it does have rust it does not have the typical east coast massive put your foot through the floorboard and hand through the wheel wells rust outs! eBay will only let me post 24 pictures. See 83 full size images here. http://1drv.ms/1qnq4OQ Vehicle: 1978 FJ40 4 Speed Disc Brakes Removable top Removable tow bar Rancho 9000 shocks with dual front Shackle Reversal Shackle Lift Aux Fuel tank Custom hitch BFG Mud Tires – 31x10.50x15 Aluminum wheels correctly backspaced Solid rockers, floor boards, wheel wells, frame New: calipers, pads, brake master cyl, Accel Super Coil, plugs, points, turn signal lenses, door handle Great working locking hubs and 4x4 This FJ40 has some interesting upgrades. Shackle reversal, shackle lift, dual front rancho 9000 shocks, and a rear aux fuel tank. It is installed but not currently hooked up under the hood. It will need to be drained and the filler neck replaced. The FJ40 starts right up. Although not currently tagged it does run and drive. It has made a few trips around the neighborhood. I’m including a removable towbar. I've towed it about 10 miles with it and it works fine. When I brought it back from NC I flat towed it – which is my preferred method for moving vehicles. This is a very solid truck but unfortunately it needs a new home. The floorboards look great. Very solid. So do the rocker panels and above the wheel wells. I pulled the head to check for piston wear from starting it after so many years – I was pleasantly surprised and the engine did not need to be rehoned. While I was in there I replaced the valve seals and cleaned the carbon deposits off the head and valves. Topped it off with fresh plugs and an oil change. The interior is very nice. The seats with the exception of the dry rotted stitching in the bottoms of the front are in very good condition. The rear jump seats look like they have never been used. The dash does not have extra holes drilled in it nor has the radio hole been modified. Factory roll bar. All switches work, air blowers, horn, turn signals, all lights work too – including the vintage KC lights. Concerns: It has a Holly 2300 500 cfm carburetor. I’m not a huge fan but they are cheap to fix. Last winter I quickly put a kit in but it was never adjusted correctly so it runs a bit rich. Has a small air filter. I was looking for a 78 manifold to air filter but had not found one yet. It does have a header, but it has a hole in it. These are cheap, but I had yet to buy one. There are two types of rust – pitting from a bad paint job and the rear sill area. The rear sill needs to be cut out and replaced if you are doing a restoration. These parts are available from Real Steel. This is a very normal thing with these FJ40’s. There is also some pitting caused by a bad paint job. I believe a little sanding and some putty will go a long way here. I’ve tried to document the issues in the photos. Again the frame, pans, floorboards and rockers are solid. It will need a full door gasket set. These are toast. The transmission hump is cut – but for what reason I have no idea. It has the stock transmission and shifter. Extras: I’ve had 5 Fj40’s. This was going to be mine long term – so I’m including in the sale all my stockpile of goodies. Including rear quarter diamond plate with badges, rear sill diamond plate, fender flares, tailgate for when top is off, best top bikini top with window channels (needs minor repair on one strap), new oil pan gasket, new front brake pads, caliper rebuild kits, oem coil, slightly bent bumperetts, low mileage rancho 9000 shocks – and best of all a Toyota solid axle mini truck steering gear box with hoses and pitman arm for a power steering conversion. Over all this is an awesome truck and it needs someone to love it. Conditions: Winner take all. $500 PayPal deposit in 24 hours of auction close. Balance is due in CASH on pickup and within 10 days of auction end. Sold as is where is with no warranty stated or implied. I’m happy to show the vehicle to anyone wanting to preview it before bidding. Located in Lynchburg, VA.
