Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my 1987 BMW 325is. This is a very sharp classic e30 BMW. It is nearly original all around and has not been abused, modded, wrecked, or redone. For being 27 years old, the zinnoberrot red paint is still very nice with only some minor blemishes here and there. I get compliments and stares all the time. There is very little rust on the car, and the underside is still clean and mostly rust free. Mechanically it starts, stops, runs, and drives okay. I still use it as my commuter car. I‘ve had this car for a couple of years and drive it late spring to late fall each year. I park it through the winters to keep the road salt and cinders off of it. It is a decent car overall, but has some issues that need addressed to make it great again. Ideally I would keep it since these are getting harder to find and are appreciating in value, but family priorities have me changing my plans. Here are details about the car, both good and not so good: The odometer reads 205k, and I have no documentation or information to confirm whether that is original mileage or whether the engine has ever been overhauled. Unfortunately it developed a light knock/loud tick that seems to me to be something in the front cylinder head area…not sure what it is and have not spent any money to have it looked at. I did lift the valve cover and did not see anything obvious, but that is as far as I went. The sound is deeper than a valve tick but not as deep and hard as a lower end knock. It has been this way since I got it and has gotten a little louder over time. It does not smoke, it starts fine, it runs smooth, and it still exhibits decent power. It does have a minor oil leak underneath…leaves a small drip in my driveway, but nothing severe. The timing belt was replaced about 5k miles ago in 2012, so it should be good for a while. At that time, a new stainless steel tailpipe/muffler was installed as well, and it is still nice. The tires are very good all around. I installed new euro style headlight assemblies, grills, front bumper center strip (license plate bracket filler), leather shifter knob (Bav Auto lighted version), wheel centers, roundel emblems, and power antenna, all of which complement the overall appearance of the car. The original “cow catcher” lower valence is intact including the fog lights assemblies with nice lenses. It has some scuffs and chips on the bottom, but still presents well. All body panels have the original matching VIN decals. There are some dents, dings, chips, minor rust spots, etc. around the car, but look closely at the pictures and you can see how good it is for its age. All gauges work at the moment, and the OBC does not display any fault lights. The interior is clean, but the leather seat covering is a bit stiff, the piping seam on the left upper bolster on the driver’s seat is torn open, and the dash has the usual cracks. Both power windows work but the driver’s window attachment bracket is broken, so it goes down fine but sometimes needs TLC to close. The power moonroof works as do the power locks. There is an aftermarket CD player installed, which works fine through the OEM amp/speakers. The A/C system is complete but the receiver dryer is shot. I’m not sure about the condition of the rest of the system, but the compressor did engage and built pressure when I tested it last year. The limited slip rear is quiet as are the transmission and wheel bearings. It still runs smooth and is a pleasure to drive. It would probably benefit from new shocks and bushings as well as a front end alignment. All things considered, this is a great nearly-original e30 deserving of some restoration. It is an ideal candidate for a rebuilt engine or an upgrade/swap…I just don’t have the time right now, so I am offering it for sale. I have set my reserve at what I would feel comfortable selling it for, and I do not wish to disclose that reserve at this time. Those of you who are seriously interested know what these are worth and will bid accordingly. I am selling the car as-is where-is without any stated or implied warranty. Although I have described and called out good points and not so good points, I may have missed something or not addressed something specific you need or want to know, so please ask any questions ahead of bidding. A $500 deposit is due via PayPal within 48 hours. I can hold the car for up to 30 days as long as full payment is received within 2 weeks of auction close.
