Vehicle Detail
Wonderful example of a 1967 300SEL in great condition. Anecdotally the car was one of only 37 made in 1967 and was custom manufactured for a gentleman in West Hollywood, CA. The vehicle was sold at some point to a person in Idaho who had the car re-painted from cream white to blue. In 1983 the car was purchased by Tom Daniels, Owner of Tom Daniels Motorsports in Portland, OR. He spent four years restoring the car to include replacing the engine with a 1972 280SE engine and converting it to be a 4-speed manual transmission. He bored the engine out to be a 3 liter motor, and re-set the odometer to zero at that time. The rear differential was replaced with one from a 1972 300SEL 4.5. The upholstery was replaced with velour made to look like MB velour from the day. The car was repainted in 1987 to be a brighter white than original -- specifically Mercedes Benz Alpine White. Other Maintenance highlights include the drive shaft being rebuilt in 1996, Transmission overhaul in 2004, All three air suspension control valves, brake master cylinder and right front caliper and fan clutch were all replaced in 2010. Tom sold the car to a family in 1996 who rarely drove the car and actually kept it stored in Tom's climate controlled facility. They moved to Wisconsin in 2005 but left the car in Oregon. I saw pictures on their bulletin board and finally convinced them to sell it to me in 2010. I had the car appraised for insurance replacement value by Brooklyn Motoren Werke in Brooklyn WI --- a renown expert in classic Mercedes restoration. It was given a replacement value of $15,000 in September of 2010. Then, in 2011 I had another classic Mercedes specialist, Black Forest Inc. in Glendale, WI, do a complete review of the vehicle and bring all the hoses and belts and operating parts back into MB spec. I have enjoyed the vehicle for four years. I also have a list of "toys" I wish to own in life and it is time to move on to the next. This is the last series of hand-built Mercedes, and arguably the most beautiful sedan they ever made. I anticipate someone else with a passion for these motorcars will enjoy this car as much as I have.
