I buy older Mercedes-Benz as salvage selling the best parts on eBay and scrapping the rest. In my travels I came across this 450SL from an older couple in the area. This has great potential to be a fun weekend cruiser.
It has been off the road since 2011. It starts, runs, and drives. The engine does not blow smoke or any odd noises. I did not notice any oil or transmission leaks.
I have driven it only a very short distance. I did notice some play in the steering box and the brakes should be checked. The tires are dry rotted and need to be replaced. Radiator has a leak at the connection for the overflow tank. I would not recommend driving this car until it has been throroughly checked over.
The car has been repainted the orignial color. The interior is original and in great condition considering the age. The soft top has been replaced and seems to be in great condition. I was not able to latch it in place though. I believe it may have shrunken over the years being folded and with some effort can be put back into service.
There is some rust underneath the car including a spot in the trunk and driver side of the floorboard.
The lights and turn signals work. The windows go up and down but the switches need to be replaced. I did not test the aftermarket stereo.
The climate control system is not operable. I have not diagnosed the issue but suspect it is the main under hood climate control servo. Also there is a coolant leak at one of the connections for the servo.
I offer this 450SL for sale as a project. With some time and effort it has the potential to be a great car.
