Vehicle Detail
Single-owner 2002 Forester S from a dedicated Subaru family. Black with a gray leather interior that has never had a cigarette smoked inside it. 178,231 miles, including 25,000 put on in the last 12 months. Automatic transmission. I would drive this car to Maine or California tomorrow, without hesitation. Has had its oil changed every 3,000 miles since new, without exception. Has had the recommended Subaru dealer service every 30,000 miles since new, without exception. The last major service was at the 150,000-mile mark. I had intended to keep this car indefinitely, as the second Forester in our family, but I just inherited a RAV4 with 28,000 miles. Still, I had to think: Keep the Subaru with 178K miles or the RAV4 with 28K miles? Folks, I went back and forth before deciding, reluctantly, to sell the Forester. The Forester is very clean and looks great from 20 feet. Get closer and you will see that it has a few apologies to make, as shown in the photos. There is surface rust around the rear window wiper and in several spots along the windshield frame. There is zero rust other than those small areas. There are small dents around the passenger-side mirror, a tiny crease along the driver-side rocker panel, a nice bruise (tattooed in white) on the rear bumper, and a few bends around the left A-pillar, courtesy of Eisenhower Expressway road debris. All these modest apologies are shown in photos. The rear driver-side fender behind the tire was dented years ago in a minor parking lot incident and was repaired, with no replacement of sheet metal. You wouldn’t know there had been a repair without me pointing it out. Since 2013 I have rebuilt the engine’s top-end when the head gasket failed ($2,750 at my local Subaru dealer), rebuilt the fuel pump and related computer sensor ($984 at my local Subaru dealer), replaced the catalytic converter, and installed a new battery. The brakes and tires are OK and should give you a few thousand miles before needing attention. The Forester passed the Illinois emissions test 7/21/2014. The air conditioner blows nice, cold air. The clock does not work. The compass on the self-dimming mirror works fine. A dashboard bulb on the right side is burned out and makes it hard to see the tachometer at night. The bulb on the left side of the dash works fine and illuminates the speedometer. The bulb to illuminate the gearshift is burned out. The 6 CD changer works fine as do the speakers. The rooftop rack has crossbars for attaching your camping gear. The gray leather has no rips or tears. The heated seats and power moon roof work perfectly. This is a good Subaru. It has quite a few miles, but that’s because it’s been a great, dependable car that was maintained as well in the end as it was at the beginning of its life. It should give you many miles of pleasure. I’m not getting rid of it because I’ve beat it next door to death; I’ve just had an almost new car fall into my lap. I’m listing this with no reserve and a nominal opening price. Buy it your way! The car is in the western suburbs. Send an email if you want to come by and see it. A deposit of $300.00 is due within 24 hours of auction end, full payment within 7 days unless mutually acceptable arrangements are made. I accept cash, certified bank check, or PayPal (for the deposit). On Jul-24-14 at 17:20:37 PDT, seller added the following information: I took the Forester to my Subaru dealer in February 2013 when the check engine light came on. I requested the factory recommended major 150,000 mile maintenance, hoping that would cure what caused the light to come on. After examining the car, I was told the head gasket had failed, so I had the dealer do the 150,000 maintenance and rebuild the top-end in the same $2,750.21 service. I've attached the 3 page bill. A $1,520 line item on page 2 states "tech replaced both cylinder headgaskets, valvecover gaskets, timing belts, and all other supporting hardware." I'm including the original manual, binder, and service records with the Forester.
