Vehicle Detail
Offering this nice solid 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Roadster. It was built right around July 1st, 1965. It is a soft top roadster with no hard top. I bought this car sight unseen out of a barn on the description it was a 'parts car' to use to help restore a 280 SL factory five speed car I own. Once I saw, I realized it was better than a parts car and would make a nice driver with a little work so I am not using it to restore the 5-speed car. The 230 SL is really all there..complete and ready to be a fun driver with a little bit of effort... It is in no way ready for touring and certainly not a show car but is complete so using for parts would be a crime. To make it really nice, the car will require a total restoration. However, it would make a nice average driver with minor mechanical and cosmetic rehab. The exterior is solid and rust free with an average paint job. The chrome and trim are original. Accessory fog lights have been added to the front bumper. The body panels are solid and rust free. The gaps and panel fit are about exactly as they were from the factory. The hood fit is very poor, lines up well when closed but needs to be closed with care and effort or it will chip the edges as the hinges and springs are out of alignment. You can see lots of chips around the edge from previous careless attempts. The hub caps are missing. The glass is all original and good with no cracks or damage. The picture with the car in the garage with dust on it is the 'as found' picture. I've cleaned it but done little else to the car.... It has a soft top only which appears new. There is no hard top to the car. The interior is very nice. The seats are MB Tex and were correctly restored at some point. They show about no wear. The carpeting is also very nice. The dash and instruments are original. There is a loose trim piece on the dash (you can see it if you look at the one slightly blurred picture). That was the only picture I had that shows it so I posted it. It has original wood and a clean dash. There is a crappy aftermarket radio in the car. The trim around the dash shows dirt and pitting. The door panels and seats are excellent. The sill plates are original. the door jambs are clean and solid. The engine bay appears original, however the engine, while a correct 230 motor, is not original to this car. It turns freely and runs but I have not started it. The engine has not been detailed. It has no leaks. It appears to have all the correct original components. The convertible top is new. The trunk and floors are solid and rust free. There are several parts in the trunk which appear to go to this type of car. They are included in the sale. There is a spare and jack as well. I did not find books or manuals. The underside is rust free. It is original. I've attached pictures and have plenty more for interested parties. The exhaust appears to be excellent. The frame is original with no damage, rust or repair anywhere. In summary, this is a good and very solid start for a total restoration that is complete and needing only the hubcaps as far as I can tell. To make it a reliable driver, it will need fuel, brakes and suspension to be thoroughly checked and repaired as needed. Please do not bid on this car thinking you can fluff it for an auction, it is a barn find in every sense of the words. Lastly, I am looking for a 230-280 SL parts car to help me restore my 280 SL I have and will consider the right parts as partial trade toward this one as there are certain parts I do need. I have many more pictures for interested parties. The car is located in a suburb of Pittsburgh and can be inspected throughout the duration of this auction. I can be reached at 860-883-3998 with any questions. Thanks and good luck. On Jul-31-14 at 12:41:24 PDT, seller added the following information: I've been asked by several if the spot welds along the fenders are good and not rusty. They are good. I tired to post the picture but am at the limit for ebay. I will guarantee that they are solid and original. The other question I have been asked is about rust around the headlights. They are also solid and have never been repaired. The is no rust of any sort and no rust repair apparent anywhere in those spots.
