Up for auction and selling NO RESERVE is this 1970 Volvo P1800 E. Development of Volvo's long-running P1800 sports coupe began in 1957 with development headed by Helmer Petterson, who was responsible for the groundbreaking PV444 during the 1940s. Petterson's son Pelle, who was then with Italy's Frua, penned the distinctive P1800 body design. Frua produced three prototypes for Volvo and then the P1800 debuted in coupe-only form for 1960. The UK's Jensen assembled the P1800 bodies at its West Bromwich facilities from kits provided by the Pressed Steel Company. The basic mechanical components for the P1800 were largely sourced from Volvo's 120-series cars. Nonetheless, they were quite sophisticated. In addition to the OHV inline four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox, the P1800 utilized an independent front suspension with upper and lower A-arms, coil springs, and anti-roll bar, with the live rear axle well-located by trailing arms, coil springs, and a Panhard rod. Soon after introduction, the P1800 gained fame beginning in 1962 as the car driven by Roger Moore's character Simon Templar in TV's The Saint. A corresponding uptrend in P1800 sales resulted. While British viewers were collectively stunned by the producers' choice of the sporty Volvo for the show, British manufacturer Jaguar had in fact been approached, but declined, this outstanding and highly successful product-placement opportunity for its E-Type. As a result, a succession of white P1800s, all bearing "ST1" registration plates, was prominently featured throughout the entire run of The Saint. In characteristic Volvo fashion, the P1800 was carefully developed, refined, and relentlessly improved throughout its run. Variants included the 1800S featuring a modest power boost and the sportier fuel-injected 1800E of 1969 through 1972 which delivered the performance to match the Volvo's enduring good looks. P1800 production ended with the 'ES' two-door sports wagon of 1971-1973 featuring a useful frameless glass hatch at the rear of the vehicle. Despite Volvo's longstanding emphasis for practicality, safety, and vault-like solidity, the P1800 provided a distinctive sports-car experience and it quickly gathered an enthusiastic following that continues stronger than ever today. Additional Specifications 1970 Volvo P1800 E VIN 18445132160 California Titled Retro California Blue Plate comes with the car Family owned since new Very Original Volvo which has been maintained and lovingly restored as needed over the past 40 years by the same family. The Exterior Paint is very nice with a great shine and finish. It is by no means fresh....appears to be 10-12 years old and has a few blemishes in places but really respectable. The Body fit is very nice....gaps are even and the doors open and close like new....no evidence of any previous damage of consequence. The Door jambs, underside of hood and Trunk area....still have the original factory paint and original decals.....truly remarkable and the Exterior is a very close match to the Original factory Color. The Exterior Chrome, Trim, Brightwork and Stainless is in super condition and was restored to its former luster when the vehicle was painted. The Wheels have a period correct appearance and are in wonderful shape....no scrapes ....and it sits on very fresh rubber. The Glass is all in very nice condition....and get this....still retains its Original issue Volvo Windshield....wow....perfect not a chip. The Interior is a combination of original and replacement materials. The Seats are all in great condition. The Door Panels .....have some wear but nothing significant. The Headliner is Original and perfect ....no tears. The front Carpet appears to have been replaced at one point in its history....the rear area appears original. The Dash has a crack on the lower portion....but the main upper dash looks great! The Gauges all operate as the should....including the Clock....WOW! The Engine Compartment still has many of the Original Labels and Volvo decals which is remarkable after almost 45 years. It appears to have the Original Engine.....photo of the casting number is included. It is very clean and tidy showing how fastidious the owner was and also pride of ownership and maintenance.
