Vehicle Detail
This is my 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 SIX PACK in factory Plum Crazy (FC7). It’s a true factory V-code car built in October-1969 (early production) with a correct date coded engine and transmission. It is NOT numbers matching. I don’t know the early history other than it was originally ordered as a “dealer demo” (V13) from Bellefountaine Motors in Chesterfield Missouri. It was optioned to look nice and go fast in a straight line as ordered with the Track Pack (A36). No power steering or power brakes. No A/C either because it was not available with the HEMI or 440 SIX PACK engine option(s). I have a reproduction of the original window sticker and a clear Georgia title showing the (I believe) correct mileage of 55604 when I purchased the car a few years ago. The current mileage is 57173. To add to the cars prominence, it has been featured in a Challenger/‘CUDA restoration guide book by Jim Schild and a signed copy will be included in this sale. In 1996, the car was purchased and restored buy a man in Chicago who did a complete rotisserie restoration. The paint finish on this car is a lot nicer than when it was brand new. My father was a Chrysler executive for almost 30 years and the factory paint quality was never this good. Unfortunately, I don’t have any documentation from the restoration but it shows he spent a lot of money to do this car right. All of the “factory” decals are in the right place. The glass is perfect. All the stainless or aluminum trim was refinished. Bumpers are nicely re-chromed. Even after 14 years, it all still looks fresh and the paint is just gorgeous. The plum crazy paint almost has a pearlescent quality. Everybody loves a “freshly” restored car but paint flaws and underlying issues can sometimes take a while to surface. The interior is almost perfect but purists will notice the incorrect center console that has an ashtray vs. the correct seat belt holder (1970 model only). The front door panels and rear panels were sent out to Just Dashes and are perfect. The best part of the interior is the original dash. One of the reasons I believe the low mileage to be true is because the dash is in such fantastic original condition. Challenger dashes are not known to hold up very well over time especially when exposed to the elements. The condition of the original VIN plate is also very nice. The last 6 digits of the serial number can clearly be seen on the upper radiator core support and the left front cowl. After owning the car for a few years, the Chicago owner ran it through a collector car auction in Missouri where it was purchased by a local Dodge dealer to use as a display car. The new Challenger was coming out and it was a good marketing idea to have it in the showroom to promote the upcoming car. The car was used for display for a few years only to be taken out for the occasional car show or parade. After I bought the car in 2011, I wanted all the mechanicals up to date. I started by having the car aligned. This car is straight (because the tech said it was) and all the adjustments were just as easy to make as a new car. By the way, the under carriage is just as nice as the top. I replaced the complete ignition system, spark plugs, air filter, oil & filter (few times), one leaky carburetor, fuel lines, transmission (using a correct 1969 date code 440 SIX PACK case), upper & lower radiator hoses, valve cover gaskets, both rear resonators (OEM style), Flow Master mufflers (2 chamber) and lots of miscellaneous electric switches. For an extra measure of protection, I also use a ZINC additive for the oil and ETHANOL additive for every tank of fuel. Everything that needed to be replaced was with the exception of the electric clock (did these clocks ever work?). It also came with an updated Sony CD stereo which I decided to keep instead of putting the factory music master radio back in the dash. Luckily the motor was in excellent shape with the exception of needing a good tune up. I don’t drive the car a lot but it doesn’t smoke (even after sitting) or burn any oil. I had the brake lines flushed as well as the radiator when the hoses were replaced. It was seeping coolant from a brand new Mopar replacement inlet neck but then I found a special fabricated replacement that’s guaranteed never to weep (trick piece made in Canada). The car runs, drives strait and stays cool (even during summer traffic in Atlanta) and will burn gas like it’s married to an OPEC sheik. It has the correct Goodyear Polyglass F60X15 tires mounted on factory rallye wheels. It even retains the original style left hand - right hand lug nuts (mother Mopar correct) and handles like a typical 1970 vintage car should on bias ply tires. The heavy duty drum brakes are worthy of learning Bible scripture before applying them to stop (just kidding, they work as designed). By far the best part of owning this car is how it looks and be prepared to have complete strangers gather around it and start asking questions (seriously). It’s a virtual “rock star” on the road. There was a recent article by a Pebble Beach Concours Judge who selected what he thought to be the most 10 beautiful cars of all time and the 1970 Dodge Challenger was included in this very unique group. (Yahoo search /news/the-10-most-beautiful-cars-of-all-time.) Whenever I go to car shows, the Mopar elite always check the serial number plate for the infamous 5th digit – V – for the 440 SIX PACK engine option. This car has the same K- frame as the HEMI cars and also has the correct factory installed torque boxes for structural support. I’m always so surprised by how many of these cars are advertised with a “matching numbers” drive train because of how they were abused by the original owners. Nobody bought a HEMI or SIX PACK car with the intention of drivability, gas mileage or future collectability. They were bought to race on the strip and/or on the street. While the car was in the shop on a lift having the transmission and exhaust components replaced, I spent a few hours completely detailing the under carriage. There is absolutely ZERO rust or corrosion anywhere…period. All of the body panels line up really well. One item to note is this is NOT a factory (N96) shaker hood car. It was added during the restoration but it’s got a real factory steel shaker hood (big $$$). It shows on the reproduction window label but not on the fender tag. Unfortunately, I DO NOT have the factory build sheet. As far as I know, Galen V. Govier has never inspected or documented this car. This car has a real SIX PACK engine and transmission, not just a regular 440 that’s been modified with a 6BBL intake & carbs. This is an auction to purchase not to inspect and re-negotiate. The car is available for inspection prior to the end of the auction and I will strongly encourage you to come and look at and drive the car yourself (or at least have a reputable inspection company come out on your behalf). This car is expensive so please make sure you have your finances in order and permission from your significant other prior to purchase. My price is a lot less than the NADA guides Average Retail price by quite a margin and this car is a lot nicer than average. I will require a $1000 non-refundable deposit to be paid within 24 hours and the full balance is due within 7 days of the end of the auction. Payment by legitimate bank cashier’s check or wire transfer is preferable. I will not release the car or the title before the funds have cleared my account. I really would prefer to sell to domestic buyers but will not discriminate. I will do my best to have the car ready for a shipper close to or at my home. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time for any reason. Why am I selling? My daughter is going off to college this fall and her education is more important to me than my hobby. Thanks for looking at my pride and joy. Best of luck with winning the auction and I’m sure the winner will be very happy with this car.
