California assembled and delivered Pace Car and it has remained in California its full 45 year life! Born on April 14, 1969 in Van Nuys, California In 1969 only 3675 Pace Cars were manufactured with the majority (85%) being made in Norwood with "N" in the VIN and minority (15%) 550 cars made in Los Angeles with "L" in the VIN. Los Angeles assembled cars did not have Z11 stamped on the Cowl Tag but the Exterior Color Code 50 and Interior Color Code 720 (Dover White on Orange Houndstooth - Pace Car colors only) on the cowl tag provides confirmation. All Pace Cars were manufactured between 02D and 05A ...with this particular car being made in 04B. Statistically only 15% of Pace Cars made were Big Block cars and it is estimated that only approximately 100 were 375HP cars...making those cars extremely rare. Mar 26 ...3:31 Posi A number of the other relatively minor engine compartment mechanical/electrical components were serviced/replaced over the years. This L78 Pace Car is a true unmolested, unrestored survivor. It still appears to wears most of its Original paint with some minor repairs. The Exterior Paint obviously has significant lacquer checking....see photos. There is minor paint bubbling on the bottom of the drivers side rear quarter and one area the size of a silver dollar with rust discoloration on the bottom of the lower passenger side rocker....see photos. The Orange Pin Stripe is still painted on as was done at the factory (except for front drivers fender which may have had minor damage/paintwork at one time).....in some areas the original stripe is almost worn off completely. The Pace Car Decals have likely replaced at some point as they are in better condition than we assume they could be after 45 years. The Exterior Trim is in good original condition .....the rear bumper may have been replaced or rechromed at some point as its fresher patina is not consistent with the other emblems, chrome, stainless trim on the car. It has what appears to be mostly its Original interior which is in remarkable even considering the low mileage of this car. It took a full bottle of simple green to clean and bring out the luster but there is no significant wear on the upholstery. The Door Panels have some vinyl bubbling around the armrest area but they are not separating or torn in any area. The Dash and Gauges are not cracked and are all unrestored and in good original condition. Clock does not work and the radio turns on but does not sense a signal so it could be the antenna cable. The Seat Springs are a bit soft when you sit down. Seat Belts are all original and date coded. It even appears to have what were the original floor mats. The Convertible Top is in respectable condition with only a couple minor tears/blemishes of a 1/2" each. It operates smoothly and mechanically is well adjusted and the frame and mechanism is in good condition. The Rear Window of the Soft Top is discolored and in poor condition but has no cracks. The Rear Window of the Convertible Soft-Top is dated 1984 so it was replaced about 30 years ago. Equipped with the very Rare Endura Front Bumper option. The Window Felts are all original. The Floor and Trunk pans appear to be very solid. The Hideaway Headlight Doors operate as they should....drivers side need a slight hand assist. It currently has 15" rims and brand new period correct reproduction Firestone Tires. The Exhaust has been replaced with a stainless steel system. The Trunk has a new mat and includes a spare and all the jack accessories. The Engine sounds very healthy and gives no evidence that it is tired ....we drove this cars for about 7 or 8 miles and it performed admirably. Major seals and gaskets appear to have been replaced. The Engine compartment hoses and other rubber components have for the most part been replaced. Most of the Cowl Induction Hood setup is in place but is currently not functioning. The Engine Compartment is nice and tidy with mostly correct components still in place. The Chassis is Original and we have included pictures for the listing. This extremely Rare Pace Car is certainly worthy of being in anyones Muscle Car Museum or Collection...... as Original cars of this caliber, history and quality are becoming very uncommon and harder to find. The 1969 Indy Pace Car is the most sought after Indianapolis Motor Speedway Pace Car ever manufactured. Fresh and fully restored Pace Cars are available but this is an opportunity to own an Original Survivor car and as the true enthusiasts and collectors state "they are only Original once!" .
