Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my 1991 W250 Dodge Cummins Diesel 4x4. I bought this truck last summer. The previous owner lived in Hudson Colorado, which is where the truck spent it is entire life. The area uses no road salt and is in the high plains of eastern Colorado and as such only gets about 12 inches of precipitation a year so this truck has never had any rust and does not now. It is an early 1991 truck, so it is non-intercooled . This version is the simplest and most reliable – no overdrive issues, no throttle position sensor and no unreliable computers for charging etc. Still has an external voltage regulator and all it needs is fuel, air and 12 volts and it runs. The design and gear ratios of the early non I/C trucks permit great fuel economy (17-20 mpg) and good highway gears, so you can drive this truck on the interstate. Since I got it I put on 4 new courser 10 ply AT tires, a new battery and rebuilt the double cardan joint in the front drive shaft. I have put about 1.700 miles on it since last fall it is a great running and powerful truck. Below is a detailed description. Mechanical – Motor is all stock. Starts on the first revolution every time, even in bitter cold. I had to unexpectedly use it last winter after a blizzard to pull out our stuck plow truck. The temperature was 16 degrees below zero and it wasn’t plugged in (although the block heater does work). It started immediately. There are no driveline vibrations or strange sounds. Motor carries great oil pressure cold and hot. No clunks in drive line when putting in drive or reverse. 4x4 works fine. Transmission shifts smooth and correctly. Steering play is what I would consider average for one of these trucks (there is some). It does not pull left or right and the tires that I took off it when I put on new ones were evenly worn and not cupped. It does not smoke, even at idle when cold. I changed the oil about 1600 miles ago and it is still on the “full” mark and clean. It will leave a few small drips coming from the vicinity of the power steering pump/vacuum pump, but it is nothing excessive and I have not had to add oil or power steering fluid. There are a bunch of little hoses and it is cramped in that area, so I can’t see where the drip comes from. Rear main and front seals are fine. There are no leaks in the transmission, transfer case or differentials. The springs on this truck still have a good arch and it still has the proper stance – not too many do at this age – most sag in the back. Sits level side to side. Shocks are good. Front brakes have good pad left. I never pulled the drums to look at the rears but I do know this truck has more brake pedal travel than my other two first gens. It is not a hazard, but it would be something to look at and figure in. In the last 2 – 3 years the truck has had a new alternator, master cylinder and mechanical lift pump. It’s been very reliable. It has a 3” exhaust that sounds great, but not obnoxious. The undercarriage of the truck is clean in a way only a salt-free truck can be…it looks newer underneath than most 3 year old Midwestern trucks. Body As stated no rust. It looks great in pictures and good “in person”, but it was repainted a few years back and the paint job was average at best, in my opinion. No body work was done. The truck has good sheet metal with just some minor dings and it deserved a better paint job than it got. There is no peeling and the paint that’s on it now is hard and durable. When you see it in person you will see imperfection in the paint and I am reiterating this because it does look good in the pictures. You have to get within 3-5 feet of it to see it. I guess it depends how picky you are. I have gotten pickier as I get older and I can barely stand anything that's not new but you can't get a new one. Nevertheless.....the paint is just average. Anyone who knows about these trucks knows they had a problem with roof rust, especially around the rain gutter. This one is perfect – there is none. I also pulled the tail lights out to check inside the bed for rust under the fender flares – again there is none. It also had a camper shell on it most of its life, so the bed is in good condition. No hitch or 5th wheel was in it. Some of the fake chrome on the mirrors and especially on the body moldings is peeling or is rippled. The door insulation on the cab is in decent shape…the hard rubber strips that sit at the base of the side windows are brittle and cracking and the vent windows have some wind whistle and will let some water is in heavier rain which seems to have been the case on all of them I have owned. The windshield was replaced fairly recently and is as new. The rest of the glass is in good condition. The door hinges are in good condition and the doors open and close ok. Interior It is in very good condition. The carpet is excellent. Headliner is excellent. Door panels excellent. No cracks or sun damage to dash. I put the seat cover on it because the seat is in great shape and I wanted to keep it that way. The seat had only very minor wear on the cording on the driver’s side. It took me couple of hours to install this seat cover the right way. I almost took it off for the photos, but in case it doesn’t sell I didn’t want to reinstall it, so you will just have to take my word for it. It is a non-smoker truck and has no cigarette burns or odor. The only defect I can think of is some of the plastic trim up by the headliner is cracked...in particular near the base of the drivers side sunvisor. The visors are in good shape and stay up against the headliner. There is no sun fade because it was kept shedded or garaged as it still is. Electrical/HVAC Unmolested electrical system. No doodads, lights or kid stuff. Fuse box still sits in factory clip in the lower dash. All gauges work. All exterior lights high/low beams work. Dome light works, through the switch and when doors are opened. Hood light works. Power windows and locks work. Horn works. Cruise works, but it is choppy and annoying to use. Power mirrors do not work. I am the only one who drove it, so I didn’t care and I didn’t fix them. Turn signals and flashers work. Horn works. Radio and tape deck work. Speedometer and odometer and trip odometer work. Heater works. Blower works on all speeds. A/C does not blow cold. It has been converted to 134 A and I had it charged and it blew cold for about 2 weeks then got warm again. Cargo light works. Gas gauge is accurate. Wipers and washer work. The wait-to-start, water-in-fuel and RWAL lights all work properly. All in all it is a good truck. The reserve is reasonable. I have a free and clear title in my name. It has a clean carfax and autocheck. If you have questions I have a limited amount of phone time, but do call and ask. I do not have reliable way to get emails during the week, so it is best to call.
