Vehicle Detail
This SPECIAL ORDER 455 HO GTO is reported to be a largely original car that is well-documented and well-equipped. It was originally sold to Alan Dhooge of Long Grove, Iowa. The order was placed on February 18, 1972 through Warren L. Langwith, Inc. of Davenport, Iowa. The same dealership delivered the car to Mr. Dhooge on May 10th; Roger Lovejoy was the salesman of record according to the accompanying paperwork, and a 1955 Chevrolet two-door sedan was traded towards it. The MSRP for a 1972 Base Pontiac GTO Hardtop Coupe was $2953.60 including the destination charge of $103.00. With the many options that were ordered on the car adding an additional $1395.00,it carried a final price of $4,538.06. The additions were almost have the cost of a base GTO in 1972. With many desirable features, this is a GTO deserving of serious consideration. It is one of only 310 built in 1972 with this body, engine and transmission combination. The hardtop coupe body, 4BBL 455 HO V8, and 4SPD HD Manual transmission w/Hurst Shifter are the best of the best available for 1972. A true street legal quarter mile muscle car of the era. The factory Julep Green was a SPECIAL PAINT ORDER and is also documented, and makes the car all the more uncommon if not the only one in existence. Julep Green was not a standard option for the 1972 Pontiac GTO, it was only available for the Ventura II, Firebird, Espirit, and Formula. Mr. Dhooge "thought the color was so pretty" he paid the extra $113.00 for the special order color. In combination with the body, engine, transmission, color, and options the likelihood of there being an identical car is slim to none. Making this GTO a true rarity. Among the ordered equipment on the Pontiac are Acc. Mr. Dhooge drove the GTO from 1972-1978 on a regular basis. On January 26, 1979 he stored the original license plates. From that day till October 2003, Mr. Dhooge only started and drove the vehicle a short distance to keep it in running condition. On October 10, 2003, Mr Dhooge sold the vehicle to Mr Schleich of Nebraska with a mileage of 78,608. The GTO was then purchased by John M O'Quinn. Mr. O'Quinn was a very successful Texas lawyer who had an extensive car collection with a full time staff. The following is from Wikipedia: O'Quinn attended an exhibition of Duesenbergs as a child at the Sam Houston Coliseum, to see what his father called "the greatest car ever built." In 2003, O'Quinn saw a 1932 Duesenberg Durham Tourister for sale at a Houston auction, at which he bought 14 cars that day including the Duesenberg for $405,000.[4] O'Quinn maintained an extensive collection of cars. The collection had a total value of over $100 million and included at least 618 cars,[8] including: seven Duesenbergs; the 1911 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost featured in the film Titanic; John F Kennedy's 1962 Lincoln Continental Bubble Top limo, and a 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic.[4] In September 2006, he bought: a 2005 Lamborghini Gallardo covered with 33 celebrity autographs ($500,000); the Batmobile used in the filming of Batman Forever ($335,000), a 1941 Packard limousine used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt ($290,000), a 1938 Talbot-Lago ($3,350,000); and a 1938 Town Car used by Pope Pius XII ($250,000).[4] The centerpiece of the collection is a plain grey 1975 Ford Escort GL, once owned by Polish priest Karol Wojtyla – before he went on to become Pope John Paul II. Bought at the Kruse auction at SEMA, the car was sold by the Pope at auction for charity to Chicago restaurateur Jim Rich in 1995, who paid $102,000 for the car.[9] O'Quinn paid $690,000 for the car October 2005.[4] In late 2006 O'Quinn discovered that several cars were missing from his collection, including a Ferrari 575M and a 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350. O'Quinn tried to get in touch with Zev Isgur, a 32-year-old ex-con whom he'd befriended and entrusted with the management of his collection of classic cars. Isgur was later convicted of embezzlement.[4] On October 10, 2011 a car from O'Quinn's collection which is said to be the world’s oldest running motor car, a historic 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout, sold at auction for $4.62 million in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This GTO has lived a well documented life and has not been shown at any shows that I know of except one local show I participated in. As far as I can determine the GTO has had one repaint in 2006, however the GTO does appear to have undergone a restoration at some point. My guess is at the same time as the repaint as the vehicle is in great condition. The GTO is all number matching and still retains it original interior and headliner. I have replaced the exhaust tips, trunk and door weatherstripping, door vin tag with GM certified vin tag, and other minor decals. Receipts are available and do come with the vehicle. I have had the original alternator rebuilt. I have also replaced the battery with a new era correct Delco battery, with correct location and production codes on the battery, from Restoration Battery. I have also changed the oil with Valvoline VR1 oil and a factory correct white oil filter, with no AC Delco label and factory correct engine overspray on the oil filter. I have also found factory correct floor mats, according to the PHS code, for the GTO. The GTO is in great condition, but please remember the last restoration was in 2006 as far as I can tell. There is a small oil spot on the driver side front seat, minor discoloration on the rear corners of the headliner, the rear driver's side passenger panel needs to be re-glued, the driver's side rear window has micro abrasions on it from the roller (not very noticeable), on the bottom of the driver's side front quarter panel the paint has a couple of small bubbles (but not noticeable and so small I had a very difficult time just trying to get a picture), there is a small 1 cm chip in the paint on the edge of the hood. I am disclosing everything I know of the vehicle so it may seem like there are many issues but they are very minor and none of these need to be addressed nor are any of them very noticeable at all. Please look at the pictures. This car can be a concourse quality vehicle with a little attention and expertise. This GTO is a great car to take to a car show, as the color will set you apart and the restoration on the vehicle looks like it was done yesterday. Be the star of your local car show any weekend.
