Vehicle Detail

Offered for sale is an absolutely gorgeous, 1964 Classic Mercedes 220 (W111) Sedan finished in a luxuriant, deep Burgundy, paired with its original color of tan MB Tex interior, totally redone (at great cost) and new (see pics) and showing only 68,928 miles on the odometer, believed to be original and correct. Comes with original books and various receipts from over the years. The car’s interior is equally clean and entirely original - including the dash wood that runs across the bottom of the windshield, which has been recently oiled as required from time to time to renew its lustre. The seats show and feel like a new car should, the carpets are in fantastic original condition. A testament to our zealous refurbishing and maintenance, everything works – including, but not limited to the original Becker EUROPA radio, heat/defrost controls, all gauges and even the original Air Conditioning unit blows cold. The car is ALWAYS covered. There are NO cracks in the dash areas where you would usually expect the sun to be especially harsh. Not with this car. (The winning bidder will also receive its 5 layer custom reflective and locking car cover.) The car’s undercarriage is entirely original, nearly entirely rust-free and solid, as are the wheel wells, jack points, trunk and trunk wells. The engine compartment is clean and well-sorted, housing the powerful straight 6 cylinder engine. In the interest of full disclosure, the only items of note would be some bumper chrome on the underside (non-visible) part of the bumper feels like it is peeling and I accidentally poked a fingertip sized hole in the top next to the sunroof while cranking it closed (see pictures). The power steering box makes noise when turning tight corners but this is normal in these old vehicles. Otherwise, I would confidently rate this vehicle an 8 out of 10.Starting easily when warm, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the gears, the engine has excellent, even compression. The car’s road manners are also fantastic, driving and braking straight, handling cleanly. Whether tooling through town on a weekend cruise or bombing down the highway at 80+ MPH, the car is an absolute joy to drive – modern enough to be comfortably enjoyed as a daily driver (although we feel the car’s too nice for that fate), but also visceral enough to provide that great vintage ride quality. Whether its next owner will be a weekend enthusiast or a serious collector, this gorgeous sedan is undoubtedly going to provide another 50 years of “pride of ownership” for it’s next owner. Considering their rarity and the astronomical prices that their cabriolet siblings are fetching, these "Heckflosse" models have long been undervalued in most classic car enthusiasts’ minds. That’s not always going to be the case, so it is many investors opinions that they represent excellent investment upside. Finding clean and turn key classics such as this is hard enough as it is, but finding a cosmetically and mechanically excellent, very original and stalwart example such as this is truly a rare occurrence. Please bid accordingly. We want this car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and answer any questions, so please feel free to email us or call Gregg at 704-905-8269. We’ve always had an appreciation for classic cars and over the years have sold an eclectic mix of high value investment grade vehicles. We only invest in cars that we’d personally be interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. BUT PLEASE DO SO BEFORE BIDDING OR BUYING, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before bidding. A 10% ($2,000 minimum) non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Only the deposit may be paid through PayPal. The balance must be paid by Cashiers Check or wire. The vehicle and title will be held until all funds are verified and cleared. Foreign buyers must pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end under the terms shown above. Buyer is responsible for shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your interest. It is NOT in "MINT condition", "factory new" (other than the seats and door panels - which ARE new), or the like. It has cosmetic issues that, if they WERE perfect, the floor price would be MUCH closer to the links shown above than the MUCH, MUCH lower floor price I am asking. The reason I mention this is, because in providing some new, additional pictures to a bidder, I noticed things like the headliner - some seams are coming apart, there are more "nicks" in it than I originally observed, etc.. I mentioned that some of the chrome on the underneath of the bumper seemed to be chipping off but today I noticed a quarter-sized spot of rust on the front bumper. All the gauges work but I noticed the gas gauge needle "jiggles" (I always keep it full anyways with 92 octane just to be safe). The rubber seals around the doors, windows, sunroof are fine and keep out water but I noticed today that a piece of black "slip on" vinyl or rubber around the drivers door is not there. I never noticed it before but now that I am selling it, I am looking at the WHOLE with more of a sharp eye. While these things are not very noticeable to the average person, they MIGHT be to a potential investor/collector so I wanted to be upfront. Bottom line, I would STILL rate the car 8 out of 10 for similar cars of this age. It looks great! The paint is beautiful. The interior of the seats and doors ARE new and are comfy! The engine is strong and purrs like a kitten, shifts great and gets up to speed quickly (I especially love the "barber pole" speedometer - as you go faster, it slowly goes around from red to orange to yellow AND orange, to yellow after 40). All the roll up windows work. Doors lock. Sunroof opens and closes with one hand. The radio works. The heater and AC works. The headlights and turn signals work. The MBZ star is on the hood. The wood looks beautiful. What more can you ask for? If you are into classic vehicles, you know this is a quality example of a 50 year old vehicle and I think I have been pretty good in detailing its issues but if you have any concerns, please feel free to come by and inspect it or have it inspected by an outside firm. I will be glad to accommodate it. Thanks! The jack points are solid as a rock. Rocker panels show slight rust underneath but not on rocker panels themselves. No rust holes or soft metal at all. The bumpers are held on to the frame with two, almost "W" shaped brackets (without the middle part of the W). These all look like orignal equipment. Hope that answers your question? - gregorytlondon From: martinpaulsexton To: gregorytlondon Subject: Re: Other: martinpaulsexton sent a message about Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series 220 Heckflosse (fintail) #121291194221 Sent Date: Mar-12-14 11:30:54 PDT Dear gregorytlondon, thanks. its not hard to see these parts. especially if they are rusted. not unusual to be able to easily push a finger through ends of rocker assembly. other spots in trunk not important, to me anyway. other spots that are important are on top of the headlight assembly bucket. mud and dirt gather there with consequent rust. and where frame rails taper to 0 towards front of car behind the front wheels. ms - martinpaulsexton Dear martinpaulsexton, I checked whole undercarriage when you asked about the other stuff. Very mild surface rust but nothing to y about as no spots are soft or have holes at all. under carriage an SOLD COMPLETELY AS IS.
