Vehicle Detail

1978 Pontiac Trans Am 400 CID/AUTO/V8 WS6/W72 combination! 260HP W72 performance package motor along with the highly desired WS6 handling option. This is a real last of the breed PONTIAC MOTOR, NOT a 403 Oldsmobile engine. The motor has a higher compression ratio than the standard trans am motor this year plus an 80PSI oil pump, baffled anti slosh oil pan, more aggressive cam and factory chrome valve covers (which this has). The WS6 handling package includes faster ratio steering and thicker front and rear sway bars as well as heavier front springs and rear leaf pack. Cameo White paint code 11. Interior Lt. Blue Lombardy Cloth 24B “The WS6/W72 combination quickly established the 1978 Trans Am as the "King of the Hill", long before there was such a thing a Corvette ZR-1. Magazines loved the car and the Spring 1978 issue of Road Test magazine squared off a Z28, a Corvette, and a Trans Am in a street fight. The T/A was clearly chosen as the easiest car to drive fast.” I purchased the car on Oct 30, 2009 in Ohio, jumped in it and drove 1000 miles back to south Georgia without issue. I have driven it about 6000 miles in 4 years. It has an honest 47,999.5 miles on it as I list this car tonight.. My goal has been a fully restored/refurbished 1978 Trans Am that I can drive and enjoy. The car is a blast to drive now and gets 13.7mpg on Shell premium gas. I have used Marine grade (for Ethanol) Stabil fuel stabilizer each and every time the car gets gas. It has not sat for more than about 4 continuous months since I have owned it without driving and burning a tank of gas. I have kept the Interstate battery on trickle charge since it was bout about 4 years ago. The car appears to have received a Ziebart rust proofing process back in the day. This essentially covers 99% of the frame/undercarriage in an oil based tar coating that preserves the original steel underneath. I sandblasted some of this off when I had to find and install a WS-6 rear sway bar strut for the car. I also sand blasted the rear sway bar, painted all of the parts in rust preventative black paint then installed the neoprene bushings. I sourced some original GM key blanks and had a friend at a GM dealership work with me to actually cut the keys by code so you get some perfect NEW GM keys with the car. I have about 5 blank trunk/door and 5 ignition keys. They are called “J” & “K” keys and come with the sale. I removed the old Pioneer super tuner cassette radio and old speakers seen in the pictures and threw away. All were no good. This car was ordered with almost all of the options available in 1978 except the bird sticker on hood (which I added). Includes cruise control, intermittent wipers, rear defrost, remote trunk release, etc. Trunk release only thing working right now. Needs different wiper motor to regain intermittent wipers. I have the original build sheet and about 95% of the original car AND the dash clock works! I pulled the dash out and replaced all of the bulbs and lubricated the clock with some light oil and it works great. I even have the original rear speaker grills and the original unmolested shaker hood. Car has all of the original body tags, door tags with all of the correct info. I have the AC belt off the compressor because the AC system needs to be gone through. Compressor turns freely still. Story I got goes - original owner gave this to his son and after that it sat. Son sold to a family friend who fixed it up and sold it to me. He replaced a rusted intake manifold (with correct Pontiac intake) and repainted the body. Then I bought it in Oct of ’09. The paint is decent but not restoration quality. Car has VERY little rust. The floor pans each have one pencil sized hole and the rear quarters have had a few inches wide typical F body rust. (at least the driver’s side). I had the rear quarter fixed about 6 months ago along with some other touch up work. The stickers still look great but I ‘nicked” them a couple of times with my pressure washer. The bird has a few missing edges J I had the rims beautifully and professionally reconditioned ($1200) on a CNC milling machine, then powder coat painted and then powder coat clear. No aluminum to polish, ever. These rims look better than they day they left the Van Nuys, CA plant plant on January 26, 1978. The stickers are GM authorized repro’s and the sail badges are NOS GM and look great. You are getting 110% of a car because I have purchased many original spare parts to compare to or use instead of the cars original parts (IF needed) as I went through the restoration. I rebuilt the original Rochester Q-jet carb and the ar runs and drives GREAT! The trans is flawless and has the factory gated racing floor shifter. Comes with all of the dash/AC vent duct pieces. One or 2 need some minor plastic or fiberglass repair. The interior needs to be restored. Otherwise this would be on sale for $15K or more! This can be a $25,000 valued original car with less than 50K miles if you spend a little time and money. I unfortunately have run out of both for this project. Thing I have done to the car (that I can remember!) -Rebuilt original Rochester carburetor -Refurbished factory rims + 4 new Firehawk Indy 500 tires (235/60/15) $1700. Tires and wheels were “drivability balanced” meaning each wheel was assigned a location on car. -Replaced all lug nuts (starting to rust so would replace or clean) -replaced all 4 shocks with Monroe Heavy Duty -Replaced rear Differential fluid with synthetic plus GM limited slip additive -Changed trans fluid and filter -Replaced steering wheel with one in much better shape. Original has chunk of “foam” missing from where your right hand sits. It needs to be restored and is included. -Changed rubber seal on trunk, doors. -Refinished shaker hood and installed new rubber seal and drain hose -Installed Dynaflow mufflers 3.5 years ago. Car has original manifolds still -Just changed oil and filter (September) -Flushed power steering system with new Redline synthetic PS fluid -Replaced belts -Replaced 95% of vacuum lines -Replaced original sway bar bushings with neoprene kit. Front and rear. -Replaced front springs with Moog HD springs -Change upper and lower control arm bushings -Replaced front brake rotors, calipers, wheel bearings & installed Wagner Thermo-quiet front pads. Rear brakes were cleaned and adjusted - still 90% life left. Spare GM original parts unless otherwise stated – from nose to tail.
