Vehicle Detail
I've decided it's time to let go of one of my favorite dream cars. This is my 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury. It is a 2-door hardtop. I will attempt to do my best in describing its condition. The engine and drivetrain: This Fury has the a bigblock 383. Im unsure of the exact year of the engine. I do know it is a steel crank 383. Its been years since i bought it. I believe its a 65 or 66 engine. I would have to look for the markings on the block and get back to anyone who is interested. I purchased the engine from a friend who owns a local tire shop.He informed me that he had a friend who had a rebuilt 383 in a Challenger that he had just totalled! He went on to say he had the engine completely rebuilt here in town by Westberg Advanced Engines. A local business speacializing in doing several types of engine work from stock rebuilds, high performance builds and engine dyno testing. It's a very strong running, healthy 383! The engine has less than 3000 miles on it! It has factory bigblock valve covers which need to be cleaned up or replace with aftermarket ones for a better engine dress up. I installed a single plane torker 383 intake manifold on it. On top of the intake sits an old carter AFB 4barrel carburetor which needs to be gone through. It will start and run the engine with a prime due to the accelerator pump not working. It came with the aftermarket electronic ignition set up as you can see in the photos. I threw on a Accel coil i had lying around i picked up from a friend although i was never fond of the color and design of them. Hey it works, so i used it to get it running. Its a tight engine with no leaks whatsoever! Behind the engine is a bigblock Torqueflite 727. It is the early cable shift style transmission. I had it rebuilt by a friend of mine who ran a transmission repair shop. He is a mopar guy i met through another friend who did nothing but transmission work. So i had him completely rebuild it with a trans-go stage 2 shift kit. I also had him modify the valve body making it into a manual valve body. It is a solid shifting transmission with no leaks whatsoever! The torque converter is a factory stall converter. The rear end has the 8 3/4 housing with 323 gears in it. I rebuilt the front suspension myself replacing the upper and lower ball joints and bushings along with new inner and outer tie rod ends. The strut rod bushings, pitman and idler arm is also new. I also replaced all the brake hardware with new parts along with shoes on the front and rear and had all the drums turned. Now when i got this car it had manual brakes on it. I pulled a power brake booster and pedal assembly from a friends 65 Fury and put it on this car. I had new exhaust put on it from the exhaust manifold flanges. It's the stock 2-1/4" pipe with flowmaster 50 series mufflers. As you can see in the photos the exhaust tips have rusted and will need replaced. It sounds and runs very strong! The Interior: The first thing i can say about this interior is that it's all there! But has seen better days! It needs a complete upholstery job done on it. As you can see in the pics the headliner has come apart and is now hanging down. I included some close up shots of the roofs surface condition from the inside and as you can see in the pics it shows some rust about the entire surface. The dash has gotten more cracks across its surface from sitting too long. The metal surface underneath the dash isnt bad as i thought it would be! Its surface will need to be re-coated but didn't show any heavy surface rust (as pictured). All the guages are still intact and working! It still sports its original steering wheel! I included some close ups of it to show some of the pitting on the horn rings surface. The kick panels were decorated in that lovely hippy pattern when i got the car so i left them that way.The center console is still complete and intact also! But needs to be re-upholstered as the rest of the interior does. The very rear section of it is not pretty as it has severe damage. The same goes for the carpet on the console's sides. The door panels are damaged at the bottoms. The inside door handles are all there but mismatched cause they're from another car. The rear panels at each side of the rear seats don't have any major damage. One of the window crank handles is missing since i got the car. The front and rear seats are all there but needs some attention too. The front seats are complete with their original chrome moldings! The rear seat is showing its age too by looking at the photos. I crawled into the back for close up pics of the chrome molding surrounding the headliners As you can see it has sustained some heavy rust about the surfaces. The carpet is shot and had been when i drove the car around for several months years ago. I lifted the carpet to get a pic of the floor board underneath that driver side since it was torn up and as you can see the floor board is rusted bad in that area exposing the exhaust pipe. I am unsure of the condition of the passenger side and rear floor boards. I glanced under the car to see if i could spot some rust damage to the floor boards but didn't see any from the bottom side of the car. The body condition: Ok, starting with the front grille of the car. It is exceptionally straight! I found it in wrecking yard years ago and put it on the car. It has no structural damage at all! Not even minor damage as far as i can see! The passenger side headlight bezel has some damage at the outer side pulling it away from the fender and the at the left side of the lower headlight opening shows a small dent. But i think it can be straightened by someone with experience at your local auto metal refinishing shop. The driver side headlight bezel is in better shape only showing minor damage near the upper area which has a slight bend in it (as picture). I pulled this bumper from a parts car i picked up some time ago. Its overall condition is good! It has a slight inward bend near the center which i tried really hard to get a picture of. Its in the photos provided but hardly noticeable. The upper flat surface towards the right side of the bumper has a small dent about an inch wide and of course the lower lip has some bends obviously from a bumper jack someone used on it prior to me finding it. Other than that the corners where it surrounds the fenders are in great shape. These minor things can also be fixed by someone with experience in bumper straightening and re-finishing. The chrome finish looks great! With a good polish job i don't see why it would need re-chromed for street use. The flat piece underneath the upper side of the bumper below the grille is in great shape with no damage at all! The turn signal lenses in the bumper are intact and still in good condition with no major damage. The front driver fenders condition is great with no major dents or dings! The prism molding is also is great shape with no damage. If you look close at the pic of the red, white, blue stripes there is an inward impression at the center of them as if they were struck by something. They were this way when i got the car. The inner fender wells are sound too! Most of the outer body of this car was surprisingly straight when i found years ago! The driver side door isn't bad either as it is in good condition with no major structural damage. I included some close up pics of the very lower section of the door. As you can see it doesn't show major rust like some cars this age! I've seen this area completely rusted through! The door jambs are in good shape as well with no major cancer in the process of consuming it (as pictured). The molding is also in nice condition as with the rest of the outer side molding! The driver side quarter panel doesn't have any major dents but does have some rust taking place on it. I included some close up pics of the damage which is just above the rear tire and at the lower rear quarter where lots of cars this age tend to start rusting first. The trunk lids outer condition is straight but upon close inspection the inside has suffered rust damage. It is the entire area underneath the lids outer lip which i got pics of you to see. However, the trunks chrome molding is in great shape with no major damage showing! The driver side tail light lens is not damaged with holes but the chrome finish surrounding them is pitted as with the passenger side tail light lenses which one has a hole that the bees decided to make a home of over the years. The rear bumper doesn't have any major damage but it does have a slight dent in it almost above the passenger tail pipe. I did get a photo of it which you can see. There is some rust near the mounting bolts on each side. The bumper guards look to be in good condition. As far as the the chrome finish i wish i could say it is as nice as the front bumper but its not. Now the passenger side quarter panel is straight with no major dents but it has suffered some rust damage as the driver side at the lower quarter area behind the rear wheel and some minor rust is seen above the wheel well. The chrome piece is straight on the this area of the car too! The passenger side door is straight as well as its chrome trim. The door jambs are in good condition with no major damage. I spotted a small area of rust at the bottom front just in front of the garnish molding (as pictured). The front fender and its chrome is in good condition as well! There is still an antenna. I had to push it into its opening to get the tarp over the car so its tucked away in the fender. The cars upper roof surface doesn't have any damage but at the upper corner of the back window on the driver side shows some pitting along with a small hole. I included some close up pics of the weather stripping on both sides which show their age on the front corners. And some close ups of the rain gutters. The cars glass is all there with no cracks however, the windshield has suffered a surface gouge on the passenger side. It was in that condition when i bought the car. I hope i was thorough in giving a complete description of this car. I've included 196 photos to try to put this car in your hands! As you can see this is what can be done to the 65-66 Fury! I dreamed of doing what Tom did to my car but time is moving too fast so it must go! As you can see from this pic the 65-66 Fury has alot of potential! Thanks for looking :)
