Vehicle Detail
Honda CL 450 scramblers first showed up as "off road" kits for the CB 450 in 1967. 1968 saw the official release in blue, silver and red. The CL450 K1 put out around 43hp at 9650 RPM, it had a 5 speed gearbox and could, if well tuned, hit the low 90 mile per hour range. As the CB models kept evolving for the road, the two models moved further and further away from each other. The CL450 kept the drum front brake, the high braced handlebars and the aggressive look with the fantastic looking pipes. There were plenty of the scramblers made, it is, however, rare to find a 450 K1 in candy red….especially in this condition. The condition of this bike is pretty exceptional for what appears to be largely a "survivor" bike. The tins were repainted a few years ago simply because a light fell on them and scratched the tank. The paint is still glossy and in really great shape. The inside of the tank is rust free, the gearbox and engine are tight, the brakes work great and all of the electrics seem to function as expected. When you look at the photos you will notice the seat is original and untouched. The cover is in great shape but the foam padding is mostly broken down, but the owner preferred the original seat over having it redone. The tires are in great shape, but are hardened from age. One could likely ride them a long way, but I would definitely recommend replacing them soon. We are selling this bike for a client who is selling this and a few more bikes simply to facilitate a new custom bike we are building for him. We received the bike a few weeks ago, rebuilt the carbs (as it had been sitting for a while) and soaked them in the ultrasonice, installed a new battery and quickly realized it ran better even than our vintage CB450 race bike. This is a very strong little bike. Without even a glimpse of hesitation one can turn the key and either hit the starter button or kick it over and have it fire first kick almost every single time. Once it fires the sound is intoxicating. As a 450cc twin, this is not a hot rod, but instead a gentleman's bike with a hearty growl rumbling from the exhaust that again, sounds TOTALLY solid. Solid is undoubtedly the way this bike is best described. The details are a in the photos. The paintwork is nice and shines well, but it is not a show-quality Concours finish job. Instead, I'd say this bike presents and shows perfectly at your neighborhood bike show or rally and it rides better than anyone would expect. Everything works from the squeek-free suspension to the well-sorted brakes and clutch to the fully functional electrical system. The vin number is CL450-1002143. The engine case and gearbox are again SOLID and show no signs of major repair or bodge jobs. This is a truly rare piece that would make a fine addition to any collection. The details are all there in the photos. If you have any questions please email me. This bike has a clean Texas title and will be ready for delivery immediately after the auction ends..
