WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THIS PARTICULAR 2007 GEM CAR Reason No. 1: Just $5,200...or make me an offer I can't refuse Everyone selling a GEM car obviously touts the features of their particular car. However, if you are new to the market, there are a few things you really need to know. First, why is the year 2007 so important? Because all of the growing pains of the GEM car in its evolution from 2001 -- 2006 have been responded to, a 2007 model year or newer has implemented all of these very necessary improvements. There have not been significant design changes to GEM cars since 2007. 1) Do you want big arm muscles and chipped teeth? Prior to 2005 model year the steering on a GEM car was aerobic, to say the least, particularly at low speed. After just a few maneuvers: Mama Mia, my arms are worn out. Also, see a bump, feel a bump was apparently the design goal for 2001 -- 2005 GEMs. Thankfully, the newer models have a "real" coil-over-shock automobile-style suspension. 2) The Delta Q quick-charging system, the braking system, digital displays, improved Rack-and-Pinion steering, high-low beam headlights, among other features, are all included in model years 2007 and newer. Did I mention that my GEM car is a 2007? But why this particular 2007 GEM car? This one, you must admit, is cute as a bug. It has the added bonus of the 34" x 48' cargo bed, but with an important bonus: The very useful stake-bed fencing and gate that provides a safe and handy way to carry your personal items (or work items). The car also has the heavy-duty front bumper. Secondly, batteries. Beware of sellers who indicate their batteries are "fair" or "pretty good," etc. This might be code words for "they're good enough to do a very short test drive." Check the age of the batteries. Also, verify that the batteries are the correct size for your particular GEM car. It matters. You don't typically need to do much work on a GEM car, but you will need to periodically replace batteries. And there are cheap batteries (referred to as "flooded," i.e., require maintenance), followed by "sealed batteries," which are better than flooded, but won't last long in a GEM car. What you want are gel sealed batteries (about $280 new: $1,700 for six). These are pricey, but they will typically last about five or six years. You won't have to fiddle with them; they won't leak; they'll give you great range, and they last a very long time. The gel sealed batteries in my GEM car are less than one year old. Last, but not least, my GEM car is the eS model, which means that you can register it for use on public streets. What's the point of having something this cool if you can't drive it around town and show off? Buy-It-Now Price: $5,200. If you've done your homework, you will realize this is a very, very good deal. A comparably-equipped new GEM car would be about $12,000. Keep in mind my GEM car only has 3,300 miles (i.e., an average of about just 50 miles per month!) Please note: My son has owned many GEM cars over the years, and he likes to stress that you should not purchase one in order to save tons of money. They are very fun to drive, whisper quiet, look cool, don't emit toxins into the air, and just cost maybe 50 cents to charge up. But if you calculate the cost of the vehicle, the cost of batteries, etc., you can probably save money by purchasing a 1998 Honda Civic for $1,000 and pay $3.75/gal for gas. . .assuming you like Honda Civics & gas. If you have any questions or would like to stop by to check it out and/or take it for a test drive, please give me a call at 619-403-4222, or email me through ebay.
