Beautifully Restored Classic Volvo 122S - No Reserve Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 If you want see the car, I will have it parked on the street for viewing. Just email me first, and I will give you directions.I will also be happy to give you a test drive. More than $10,000 invested in vehicle and restoration, not to mention hundreds of hours of my labor. My restoration philosophy: I wanted to keep the car looking as original as possible, while at the same time upgrading performance and safety to modern standards. No Rust. Performance has been improved as a result of the electronic ignition and the larger diameter exhaust system. Equipped with standard 4 speed transmission (no overdrive) The car is equipped with the original B18 engine, but the radiator and exhaust manifold are B20 versions. The B20 exhaust manifold was needed in order to upgrade to a dual down pipe 2” exhaust system. The B20 radiator was installed in order to have an overflow tank (B18 engines normally don’t have one). A Weber 2 barrel carburetor kit was installed to replace the standard dual single barrel SU carburetors. This carburetor has a manual choke as did the original carburetors. This kit was installed in order to make tuning and maintenance simple. SU carburetors are difficult to deal with, most shops won’t touch them. Some claim that the Weber makes the engine more powerful, but I believe the power is about the same with either set up. It is just that the Weber is much easier to deal with. If you would prefer the original SU carburetors, I still have them attached to the original intake manifold. Just let me know at the end of the auction and I will let you have them at no extra charge. They worked fine before I removed them, but they have been sitting in my garage for 5 years, and would probably need to be cleaned up. The electric engine fan is much more efficient than the normal mechanical fan. The old mechanical fan ran the same speed no matter how hot or cold the engine was. The engine took a long time to warm up with that fan running all the time. The new electric fan only comes on when the engine is hot, and cools it very quickly. In cool weather it won’t come on at all unless you let it idle for a long time. This saves power. The Crane electronic ignition eliminates ever having to replace or maintain points.A modern style high output alternator was installed to replace the old fashioned wimpy generator. Also, alternators are less maintenance than the old generators. These cars normally came with very skinny tires (165-15) on skinny 4" rims. The original size tires are hard find now, and if you do find them, they are a bottom of the line cheap tire. I wanted to have wider rims and tires, but wanted to keep the original Volvo hubcap/chrome ring look. So I found a shop that specialized in making rims wider. They did this by cutting the center of the wheels off and welding them to new wider rims. The car now has 6" rims and 185-70-15 tires. The rims were painted with the same red paint as the rest of the car, resulting in a really nice appearance. This is one of first standard production cars to be equipped with disc brakes, and they work wonderfully. This car was also one of the first to have three point seat belts, instead of the usual lap belt. But they were not retractable and were always in the way and looked sloppy. I have replaced them with modern retractable ones that work great. As originally equipped, there are no seat belts in the rear seat. No oil leaks or any other leaks of any kind. The odometer actually says 16,482, but I am sure it has turned over. I have had the car about 10 years, but probably only put on about 2,000 miles during that time. Interior: New front seats with headrests. New upholstery. New carpet. New door panels. New retractable 3 point seat belts. New headliner. New radio / CD player. Trunk: New carpet. New spare tire cover. Automatic trunk light added. Exterior: Recent Clear Coat Paint. Bumpers and other misc. parts re-chromed. New windshield and seal.New rubber seals around each door and trunk.New window "fuzzies" on both roll down windows. New taillights. Original steel wheels widened to 6”, then painted to match exterior. New Pirelli 185-70-15 tires. Mechanical: Weber two barrel carburetor kit installed (manual choke). New Sport, 2 inch, exhaust system with B-20 dual downpipe manifold. Crane Electronic Ignition (no points to maintain).New alternator replaces old style generator. High Voltage coil. Electric engine fan – only operates when needed for cooling. New B-20 radiator with overflow tank. New fuse block with modern style fuses. Headlights rewired for brighter lamps. Negatives: Windshield wipers operate slowly. Interior heater fan seems to have two speeds – low & lower. Original temperature gauge inoperable – so I have installed a better, aftermarket one, under the dash. When turning left, the turn indicator does not automatically shut off, but on right turns it shuts off fine. I never got around to fixing this because it is so easy to just push the lever back. Speedometer works but says a much higher speed than you are actually going. When you are actually going 45 mph, the speedometer says 60. This is probably due to someone installing the wrong speedometer cable gear in the past. The cable gear is replaceable, but I haven’t bothered – I just allow for the difference. The trunk lid doesn’t stay up very easily. I keep a piece of PVC in the trunk to act as a support. To fix this you would need to make the trunk lid spring stronger – or replace it.There are two or three places where paint has chipped.Interior light works well, but part of the lens is broken.
