This is a nice grand prix to start with for a project car. It runs excellent and has very very little rust. With the exception of the wheels, I believe it is all original. These cars look great when restored and this is the rarer XF code 428 SJ version. It is very uncommon to see these for sale. This is the first one I've seen in nine years and I go to many car shows and read many different classifieds in the northwest regularly. Regular J model grand prix's are somewhat common but you just don't see SJ 428 cars that often. It is cool to go to a car show and see one of these within the gto's and firebirds. Here are all the specifics on the GP. Included below are links to more pictures and a couple videos. The build sheet is included but is in rough shape. You can see the engine code, rearend code, and various other things that do match the car on it, but it is not nice. I found it under the front carpet. I believe if you do PHS on it you'll get a new build sheet. Included in the link are some pics of restored grand prix's. PICTURE LINK: http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/ad267/tutheck5/1969%20grand%20prix/?start=al MECHANICAL The pontiac has the numbers matching XF code 370 horspower 428 big block. I have checked the VIN on the block myself to make sure. This is a factory 4-bolt main engine from what I've read. Many big block pontiacs had 4-bolt mains but no 4-bolt caps. This supposedly does from the factory, but I'm not sure on that. Some people say only the HO cars had the 4-bolt caps but other sites said this should too. The transmission is a turbo 400 that works great. Rear end is the 5F code 12 bolt posi with 3:23 ration. I don't know if the original gears are still in it. But it's most likely the original rear. I know it's a 12-bolt, is a posi, and has the original posi tag on it. Build sheet lists it as a 5f rearend. The motor runs excellent. No smoke at all. No blowby, no dripping leaks. It runs cool. No oil in water or water in oil. No knocks or ticks. It runs smooth. It has a minor exhaust leak but it's barely noticeable and goes away a little when warms so it's probably by the manifold somewhere. The transmission works as it should and doesn't slip. Rearend spins both wheels as it should. The car has Power steering, power brakes with front discs, tilt, power windows, power drivers seat, factory gauges. The windows all work but rear ones need lubed up. It's normal for them to appear weak but usually just need lubed and used. Front windows work fine. Power seat works. Tilt works but column has been changed or painted. It looks correct though. Fuel, oil, and temperature gauge work. I don't believe the speedo works. The car has good oil pressure as you can see in the video. Drops a little when warm but still gets to 50-60 with a little rpm increase. The A/C compressor is off the car BUT IS INCLUDED. Wheels/tires in the pictures are NOT included. It comes with oldsmobile rallys. Tires are just rollers. The car originally came with 14" pontiac rally's that are easy to find. There is also a company selling 17" chrome aftermarket pontiac rally's that would look sweet on this. This company also makes 17" honeycombs and snowflakes for transams and I can get you the contact info. Headlights and turnsignals work. Heater fan and radio sometimes work. Must be a fuse or something. The wiring looks all original so I don't think it's anything major. Wipers work. Brakes need bled but I may get to that. The car runs awesome but I'm sure new plugs/wires/lube/filters etc. wouldn't hurt it. Exhaust is dual and sounds nice. Overall, it needs next to nothing mechanically. VIDEO OF ENGINE RUNNING: http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/ad267/tutheck5/1969%20grand%20prix/?action=view¤t=SAM_5273.mp4 OIL GAUGE VIDEO: http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/ad267/tutheck5/1969%20grand%20prix/?action=view¤t=2012-12-27_14-35-24_409.mp4 BODY The body on this car is nearly rust free. It needs a trunkpan or trunkpan patches. Besides that, the only other rust is a small spot in the floorpan behind the passenger front seat. You can see it in the pics and I can patch it (proper butt weld) if you'd like. The frame, quarters, wheelhouses, trunk lid, hood, doors, jams, rockers, front floorpans, under the seats, roof, around rear window, rear deck, firewall, cowl, inner fenders, front fenders, header, etc. are rust free. This car is very dry. It came out of Idaho but probably came out of california/nevada/arizona or somewhere like that before it got up here. It has the original paint except where someone painted the hood and some areas under the hood yellow. It was painted to either cover sanding or just seal where the sun had faded the paint away. No bodywork has been done in these areas. Only one small spot on the car where the green has been spot painted and that's right behind the passenger door. It's nothing major. There's light filler there but a depth meter magnet sticks easily and the filler is not cracking. Just looks like a light dent was repaired years ago. No other signs of any repaint or bodywork ever. No overspray in jams or anything like that. There is a spot on the inner fender that was cut to get in and get a hood hinge bolt out. I can weld it back if you'd like or if you prefer, do it yourself. Thankfully, this car never had a vinyl top. The top, and area around the rear window are perfect. Bumpers are usable for a street car. Some lenses are broken. Doors don't drop when you open them and close properly, as does the hood and trunklid. It has a couple dents but for the most part very straight and great shape for a project. INTERIOR The interior appears all original with the exception that the steering column may have been changed. The steering column is tight though and won't need rebuilt. Horn works too! The interior needs full resto including new upholstery, dash is cracked, console is probably cracked, needs headliner, package tray, carpet, the whole deal. Many parts can be re-used but anything upholstered probably needs redone. Would be usable with carpet and front seat covers if you wanted to drive as-is. OVERALL It is a rare to see a 428 SJ project for sale and is in great restorable condition. Any bodyman will be pleased when they get this project, or it's an easy one for an amateur bodyman. I haven't had the pleasure of driving it on the highway yet due to the weather here, but I'm sure it's got plenty of power. There were only a handful of musclecars that made more horsepower in 1969 and that number is probably under 10 cars. The ones that made more power are the some of the elite of the musclecars ever made including the 427 vette, 375 horse nova/chevelle/camaro, 426 hemi, boss 429, w32 442's, and few others. An intake, headers, cam, and maybe an aftermarket ignition would probably really make it a screamer. Thanks for viewing and happy bidding. THIS CAR IS SOLD AS-IS. It is a project car. I take time to get all the details correct and my feedback reflects that, but there are a lot of variables with 40 year old cars and my interpretation of what I see may be different than yours. I am very experienced with these cars though, and you should expect no surprises. Thank you and please read the payment instructions well. Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool.
