Vehicle Detail
For your consideration, a 1980 International Scout with the Turbo Diesel, 4X4 manual. Lets start with the most important issue- this is a rust free Colorado car. You can find a lot of Scouts, but most are rust buckets. This is an extremely well maintained Colorado car and it has never been wrecked. Better yet, the drive train is completely rebuilt. Yes, it was woman owned and she didn't want to take a chance. It has 180K miles and these can go 300K plus, so she dropped some big bucks- like 20K and then realized there are better options than a 1980 Scout for a Biodiesel car. However, this is still a very cool rig. It's a 1 off car with the Turbodiesel, 1980 is about the only year with the turbo. The motor is a Japanese in line 6 with a Bosch type injector pump. She was running around Boulder using Blue Sun Biodiesel, which is very high quality fuel. There are several things to consider about this vehicle, the first being if you are into Diesel motors. If you are looking to make a rock crawler, this vehicle is too nice and it's all Original- there are plenty of rust buckets to chop up. This is a bit of a classic, best served by someone that likes it the way it is. It has not been modified. However, it is a perfect Veggie oil candidate. You need an older Diesel without electronic injection if you want to run non conventional fuels. Japan Pioneered diesel engines long before WW2 and the engine can handle high viscosity fuels. So when gas goes back up- it will- this could be a pretty economical car. I also have a lot of experience with Vegie oil cars and can help you do an economical secondary fuel system if you are interested. So if you need 4 wheel drive, like older vehicles and are into alternative fuels, keep reading. If you want a 4X4 beater this isn't what you want. I have a lot of experience with diesel cars- Cummins, Mercedes, VW, Ford, GM and even Nissan and I'm a big advocate of Diesel. The Nissan 6 is a small, simple engine- very robust, really built for small trucks. This won't set any speed records but you can get well over 20 MPG- not bad for a 4X4. It's built like a jeep so it is quite capable off road, but it will do highway speeds and is quite comfortable. It is a conversation piece being a Scout, but add in a Turbo Diesel and it is very rare, especially in this condition. The whole top will come off and there are lots of interesting versions of tops, a bikini, a fold down, a truck cab etc. A good analogy would be a long jeep. If the world ends, you could still get around on veggie oil or even used motor oil and not fight the road warriors for the leftover gasoline. You can also haul a lot more stuff than a jeep and go most anywhere you desire. It's comfortable enough, yet you can still get back to basics. If you are truly interested, this car is in Colorado and will drive home anywhere- even south America I suspect. It also has the American side steering wheel. Fly to Dia, drive home. I am a 100% seller and have sold lots of cars on Ebay. If the car is not as described you can back out. I am not a dealer, just a car Hobbyist that likes interesting vehicles. My specialty is rust free western cars and all of my buyers say the cars are better than advertised. I have no interest in misrepresenting the vehicle, but I also have to deal with scammers. So, here are the rules. First off, I'll do Canada but international never seems to work out. Second, you must have a Paypal deposit of $500.00. It's the only way I can verify you are legit. If you don't like Paypal, don't bid. Paypal protects you also as I am verified. I also can do partial transportation, but assume you will fly into DIA and drive it home. I am very confident it could go cross country, it is completely rebuilt and serviced. Also, I don't end auctions early. I know I'll get lots of offers but for me, half the fun is just seeing how the auction goes. Bid what it's worth to you, if you get outbid then it wasn't the car for you. Sometimes they don't hit reserve and I'll relist it. If you are in Denver, you are quite welcome to drive the car. In fact, I will post more photos and answer questions (via Ebay) as the auction proceeds. Since we had a snowstorm I need to clean it up and get it on a lift for undercarriage photos. Be advised, this is in very nice original condition. Obviously an older car but very well maintained and a top notch example. . I anticipate this car will sell for under 10K, You can't restore a rusty one for that price. The drive train is also rebuilt, as is the suspension. On Jan-06-13 at 17:58:38 PST, seller added the following information: lots of good questions. I photographed the body mounts. It should be apparent that they are excellent, you can see the rocker end still has the plug, this is the first place to go. The door sills, the cowl, the tailgate area- still there! Put this on a salted road and these rust away very fast. Hopefully it shows the big up side- the body is still solid, which is very unusual for an old 4X4, especially and international. Also, there is very little greasy buildup so no leaks. Pretty darn good survivor, you can see the body panels are straight. There are a couple of small dents, one on the nose and one on the side like a parking lot bump from a door. The drive train and suspension are tight, I can also get the number of the shop in Boulder that did the overhaul. It handles extremely well off road and mountain roads, nice tight steering. It is definitely designed for off road. But let's talk about the down sides. First, no AC. Then the rear seat is gone. It's a pretty basic seat but if you want to make the car 100% original, you will have to find one. There is a crack in a interior moulding piece too. It's a trim piece below the back window. I suspect if you find the seat that would probably be there too. Glass looks good, didn't find any cracks in the top. Now I went driving and the drive train is tight, like new. But, at 70 MPH it is at 3000 RPM. I had a Nissan truck with this engine and a 5 speed, no 4X4 and I could do 75 all day. Unfortunately this car is geared more for off road and around town. It will do 75, but I want to be very up front that you really do not want to drive long stretches above 3000 RPM. Driving across Kansas would have to be done with patience. You will definitely long for an overdrive if you drive it home. It also has a glow plug button, if you never owned a diesel you might want to talk to some diesel owners before you jump into this. This isn't a luxury SUV. These also are not fond of extreme cold. It has a 120 volt block heater, but below zero they can fail to start if you do not mix in kerosene with the diesel. Now just my own thoughts. If you are looking for an 80 Scout, this is about as good as they get. For comparison, I would compare this more to a Jeep than a truck. Very basic, sacrifices comfort for function. All the off road functionality of a jeep but a lot more room for stuff and more stable. Being a convertible fan, I personally would get a soft top for it from a company in Boulder that specializes in these. Jeeps are fun, but you could really have a blast with this on Colorado back roads with a soft top for that afternoon rain. I personally would add a secondary tank for Veggie oil, but even on Diesel this would get twice the mileage of a gas engine jeep and still have plenty of room for stuff. As for a long family highway vacation- forget it. Geared to low and too noisy. Not much sound insulation. I sold my Nissan diesel because it did not have a turbo, with a turbo you can drive this to the top of Pikes Peak with no problem, and the power brakes are also very good. dual master. This would be perfect for doing the san Juan trails or the Crystal jeep trails. On Jan-09-13 at 12:07:54 PST, seller added the following information: 1/9/2013 I tried to remove the reserve, so I lowered it to 5300. Don't have time to deal with it so it will sell, you are now bidding to buy. I may toss low rated bidders. The local prospective buyers do agree it's a solid vehicle and in very nice condition. I will try to get some better pan shots, but I can advise it is not repaired and is solid- no holes. The shifting is very tight, no fluids drooling- obviously re-sealed. Wish I had the rear seat but don't. Second opinions are that it is about as nice and original as they get, but missing a few original items like the stereo (upgraded stereo) wish it had AC too, but it is what it is!On Jan-09-13 at 21:35:34 PST, seller added the following information: I have had a lot of very valid questions about documentation. First off to the fellow that was upset, he thought I said the Japs invented the diesel. No, they pioneered their own line of engines but they did not invent the diesel. Another fellow said something to the effect that nobody cares about off roading. I want to thank you all for the entertainment, you might want to google Moab. Some people don't like diesels, some people don't like Scouts. Well, you can exclude engine types, brands, years etc on your search. Some people don't like alternative fuels and it is perfectly happy with pump diesel or you may want to buy one with a gas engine- just sayin... Half the fun of selling a vehicle are the crazy emails and I had to share that. But folks, this ain't a 5 figure car. I'm sorry but I really can't jump through hoops documenting a car at this price. I do know the history but I really can't put this level of effort into the documentation. If you win the auction you will get to speak with a mechanic intimately familiar with the vehicle. If it is misrepresented you can have a full deposit refund. I did find out the car was originally bought in Arizona before moving to Boulder but I may not be able to produce the service receipts. I'm not a dealer, this is a hobby and I have no interest in selling the car to someone that won't like it. Don't take my word for it but you don't get 100% ratings on over 200 feedbacks from too many sellers. If you really want a Scout this one won't disappoint you.
