Vehicle Detail
1971 Plymouth Satellite GTX - EXTRA CLEAN - Air Grabber, Rebuilt drivetrain, New & Original interior - SHARP SHARP SHARP! ....tribute / clone / fake / wanna-be / bogus - whatever you want to call it, it's definitely a 'rubber neck' Driver. Visually exciting, mechanically rebuilt & reliable - would trust to drive anywhere any distance. This super clean '71 started life on the West coast as a Satellite Sebring in B5 Blue w/Blue bench interior. It has been a West coast car until Spring 2012. It was repainted in 2006 in a shade darker than B5. Drivetrain was pulled for paint, then engine/trans/rearend were rebuilt. I say rebuilt (and whenever I say something was done, I have ALL the receipts for all work completed and all done by professional shops), so it isn't the backyard guy claiming it's 'totally rebuilt' when it's had little more than plugs and oil changed. All noteable details will be listed below. Front suspension, rear suspension and front disc brake conversion also done in same time period (receipts also). The gentleman who owned her BEFORE the gentleman I purchased it from was really doing everything right to restore/refresh as a Satellite Sebring. All receipts are mainly from 2002-06 when he owned her. From 2006 on, it was owned by someone with little interest and she sat in a garage most of that time. In early 2012, I was LUCKY enough to purchase her. Unbelievably CLEAN and such a great start to a nice refresh or a great avenue to own a GTX look-alike. How many '71 GTXs do you see around?! I opted for the cosmetic GTX-like avenue and continue some of the refresh with GTX goodies. I am not among those who can afford to pay $60-80k for a real GTX, and as you will see in some of the photos, this is already my 3-yr old son's car and I had no plans of selling it out from under him (and still do not want to). Merry Christmas to a new owner....I am the typical case of being that the toy is the first thing on the chopping block, but this is NOT a 'fire-sale'. Will I sell it for the right price? - yes. Will I sell it for cheap because I'm hard up for cash? - no. Those who feel the need to talk down what I was doing with it (either 'ruining' a perfectly good clean Satellite, or the GTX purists who will spit on the screen that I dare even say 'GTX' anywhere in this auction), please keep your email insults/comments to yourself. Just FYI, anything I have done can be very easily 'undone' and it could be a Satellite again in an afternoon. I did include a side photo of her before I added goodies (except I added wheels and tires when I first got her). When I got her, as I said, the paint and drivetrain were done. It needed a new vinyl top and had just a few rips in the front bench seat. I installed the new vinyl top, and decided to freshen up the interior with new carpet and convert to buckets w/buddy seat and keeping the column shift. I obtained B-body buckets and bought the blue seat cover kit (front and rear), but the seat covers are not installed yet. (I laid the front seat covers over the buckets for a visual in the one pic). Blue interior?! Yes! It really really pops and is unique, I didn't just go the 'black works on everything' route. The rear bench cover was removed and foam and springs are in great shape and awaiting new cover to be installed (even the original cover was almost perfect (cloth inlay with vinyl trim). The black bench seat you see in photo is borrowed and is not included. The original front bench seat is included if wanted. I have the buddy seat for it (although it's not pictured) - it will need recovered or dyed, as it is green. I continued with making changes on the exterior....cut the opening for the AirGrabber in the hood. The AirGrabber is fiberglass scoop with seperate AirGrabber door from Stinger, I bought repro door hinge. So, it does function as far as grabbing air, but the door remains in open position (no vacuum/air can/cable/etc). I added chin spoilers and 'badged' it GTX with decklid decal, new repro quarter panel emblems and NOS grille emblem. I also added (incorrect) GTX emblem to the Satellite dash/vent insert, but I recently obtained an EXCELLENT condition OEM GTX dash/vent insert (see pic), and this will be included or installed. I struggled badging it with the 440 decals, but those decals over the fender sidemarker lights are just awesome-looking. The hoodpins are 3M, so they can be removed. I had the exhaust redone with 2.25" from exhaust manifold flange back, put Flowmaster 44 Super mufflers on and added the 'machine-gun' tips. (while most rear valance panels were flanged out to contour the tips, some still came with the machine gun tips even with the 'flat' rear valance, so I didn't change the valance). Finally, I added Brand New Weld Draglite wheels (15x8's and 15x7's) and Brand new Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's (255/70's & 215/70's). So, there you have it....like it or flip it off, but I can tell you that I get more looks, rubber-necking, conversations at gas stations & stoplights and compliments on her that it out numbers any possible 'nay-sayers' by atleast 10 to 1. It looks AWESOME, sounds GREAT, drive ANYWHERE (at pretty darn good gas mileage too!). I love it,and I am not alone there.... With all that said, here are some of the mechanical details, most exterior and interior details:..... Yes, it's just a 318.... But it's a true-blue turn-key car! The engine starts right up, idles great on all 3 stages of idle. Runs GREAT. So much money was spent on the small block drivetrain, I was in no hurry to convert to big block 440 any time soon. Very reliable drivetrain with good gas mileage, but sounds GREAT. The engine was gone through with rebuilt heads, new valve guides & seals, polished crankshaft w/oversized bearings, new connecting rods, new lifters, new pushrods, new rocker arms, new rocker shafts, new rings on stock pistons, new H/D oil pump, cam/rod/main bearings, freeze plugs, valve grind and finally a Comp Cam - (just a hair above stock for a subtle lope - even though she is no 440, with the tips & Flowmasters, the one-step up cam makes it sound like a stock big block from the rear). Comp Cam is a 252H Flat Tappet cam 252 duration, 206 @ 0.50, 425 valve lift / lobe lift 283. Rear end is a rebuilt 8.25 Tracloc Positraction w/271 gears, rebuilt by Randy's Ring & Pinion with pinion/carrier/axle bearings & seals/rebuilt diff. New rear springs & shackles. 904A trans rebuilt with seals, gaskets & a new converter, trans shifts GREAT. New motor mounts and transmission mount. New heater core. New front Stock-style front suspension kit with inner rods, idler arm, pittman arm, boot & clips. Master PowerBrakes Front Disc Brake Conversion kit with Lifetime rotors. New rear shoes. The paint as I said is a shade darker than the original B5 Blue. The paint code is a Honda code (Atomic Blue). The paint is driver-quality, the clearcoat gets thin on the lower bodyline (the rocker areas and valance panels could use 2 coats of clear). - However, the rockers still have the nubs for the original Satellite rocker trim, so I had planned on grinding those off and reshooting the rockers/valance panels anyway. I do have rocker trim from a Fury that looks extremely close to the GTX rocker trim panel and I will include that. The rest of the paint looks good, but for critics, would still would have to call it driver-quality. It was done by a shop, but the previous owner was fueding with that shop and that is just my opinion that the shop finished with a less than perfect finish. I have never had anyone say anything about the paint quality (or maybe they are too distracted with all the coolness of the car...lol). The body is very straight, there was no labor for any ding/dent/etc repair on the receipts for the repaint, just sand and shoot. All the brightwork/trim is in extremely good shape! Wheel lip mouldings are in good shape! The grille is perfect. The chrome bumpers have scratches and wear, but are presentable for a driver, they don't detract from the car's appearance. They are very straight, but the front passenger side has some scrapes on the edge (can be seen in pic). The interior is in great shape. The headliner and door panels are original and still look very very good. There is a dashcap on, the original had 2 cracks in it. The dash is still the 'sweptline' dash, but I have a Rallye dash that is included with choice of 120 or 150 mph speedometer and new uninstalled gauge face inlays. Everything works! Every button/switch/light/accessory! (all exterior lights/domelight/maplight/fender turn signals/door buzzer/radio/etc etc!) The only things missing are the wiper motor and arms (but I have the arms and a motor that was in middle of being rebuilt), she has RARE rear defrost (that works) - but is missing the ductwork under sailpanel. The inside hood release handle is missing also. All glass is in great shape and windows roll up and down with ease. Locks work, doors open and shut great. The body is super clean, the floorpans are in amazing (original) condition with original paint, the trunkpan is super clean and original. The underneath retains most of it's undercoating, no rust issues. One spot of rust on the inner panel on DR side qtr (trunk dropoff). The framerails have 2 of the holes spread a little from a transporter's hooks (not bad, but wanted to note it). I am sure there are things I am forgetting, but I have outlined a bunch of stuff. The pictures and thou$ands and thou$ands in stacks of receipts tell the story. She is currently in storage and I have included a photo of that also. I have the original manual and some original paperwork for it, as well as the '71 Service and Chassis manuals in GREAT condition (thick as phone books). I have alot of photos, but could only add 24 here. I will email what I have to serious BUYERS only, I won't email to 'shoppers' or those who are just curious or dreaming (have no means or intention to pay/buy). Please be serious with your questions, save lowball offers and trades for someone else. Please no requests for 'viewings' just because you live close and have nothing else to do or are just curious. No 'shoppers', no phone call requests without serious email communications first. Please be prepared to fund your purchase should you win the auction, your bid is a contract. No gameplayers or dreamers. Deposit due within 24 hrs via Paypal, full balance due within 3 days of auction end. Please see payment section for details. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time (mostly from coming to my senses and not selling it at all!) This is an As-Is sale, need I say there is no warranty on a 42-yr old car? I have done my best to describe the condition, but would take too long to inventory every imperfection from factory condition. I have never had anyone say anything but 'wow' or 'that's really clean/in great shape' when they see it. Only the enthusiast expecting a #1 restored car will be disappointed....chances are that enthusiast won't be looking past the word Satellite anyway and will be writing a check from a home equity line for $80k+ for the real thing, restored. If you are realistic, you will NOT be disappointed. Will work with transporters and exporters, no problem. Selling vehicle as you see it, with any extras mentioned....however, some things can be negotiated to leave out of the deal if needed (ex: wheels/tires, dash insert, etc). On Nov-29-12 at 21:59:46 PST, seller added the following information: Hello all! Thanks for looking and for all the positive comments about this B-body! Just a couple things to add - yes, seatbelts are all there and they are blue. The package tray and the c-pillar interior trim by package tray are a little worn, but no damage or anything. The dash clock is intermittent - you press the knob in (like to change time) and it works, but sometimes I find that it stopped. I noticed that I listed Disc Brake Conversion for the front - but in the fender tag codes, it came with the 10.5" Disc Brakes from the factory - but in the receipt for the front brakes it does say that a disc brake conversion kit was purchased. Thanks again for looking and Good Luck! If you are unsure about anything and you are a serious bidder, please feel free to email & I'll answer to the best of my ability.
