Vehicle Detail
For sale is my 1988 Porsche 911 Targa, equipped with the highly desirable G50 transmission, and finished in Diamond Blue Metallic (which really looks like charcoal metallic with a slightly bluish cast). I am the third owner, and have owned the car for the last 6 and a half years, and have put approximately 7500 miles on the car in that time. The previous owner purchased the car in April 2000, and the original owner purchased the car new in 1987. I have almost all of the receipts from the last 12 years, and most of the records from the original owner. I will do my best to accurately describe the vehicle, and concentrate on its flaws in the interest of full disclosure, but it is a fine car, and I have enjoyed owning it very much. The reason for the sale is that we now have five cars, one of which is a 1989 911 coupe, and something has to go. I have become more of a coupe guy as I have gotten older, and the 3 women in the house don't like to get their hair messed up, so the targa drew the short straw. OK, the big stuff you will want to know about: 1) Exterior: The car has been repainted a long time ago (original owner had it done) in its original color. I don't have those records, but it appears that there was some right front quarter damage at some point. The paint has aged, and there are two or three small areas ( left front bumper, L cowl-area near the windshield pillar, and one spot on the rear deck where the clear coat has peeled slightly. The rear deck overall has a slightly lighter cast to it than the rest of the car, probably from the engine heat over time. There are many small stone chips on the front valance, bumper, and not as many on the hood, but a few are associated with very small dings. While we are on the subject of dings, there are several small ones elsewhere, most of which only show up on close inspection. There is one on the L front fender where the sheet metal is pushed out, probably from a strut replacement incident. It is small, but the clear coat over it looks slightly crazed. The overall appearance is very presentable, as the pictures show. It was very hard to show most of the flaws with my camera. The windshield has 2 old repairs in the center and to the R, which did not keep it from passing MD state inspection when I bought the car. The windshield is fairly well pitted at this point, noticeable when driving toward the sun. The original 16 inch Fuchs wheels show no curb damage, and the original silver anodizing is still beautiful, with just a few minor scratches and no streaks/milkiness. The black centers have been resprayed, and look fresh. The tires are older, but with less than 8500 miles on them, with most of the tread remaining, and no signs of cracking. They are Bridgestone RE 750's. The black trim is in great shape, but the windshield trim stands a bit proud of the rubber gasket. One of the rear rubber strips stands away from the bumper a bit, something I have seen on numerous cars. The only non original exterior item is an original Porsche chin spoiler, which is in great shape. The lights and lenses are fine, and the headlights are nice and clear. 2) Interior: very good-to-excellent, really. The front seat leather is in great shape, with minimal wear on the outside driver's seat bolster. There is a small tear in the outside front corner of the passenger's vinyl near the seat controls. No cracks in the dash. The shift knob and boot leather is fine. 3) Electrical: The original radio is still in the car. The radio works fine. I don't use the cassette deck. I installed an in-line iPod adapter in the glove box, which taps into the antenna feed, and is easily reversible. The AC blew cold for a few years, but I have not recharged it. It is the original R-12 system. The interior light does not come on when the doors are open, but still lights up (usually) when manually turned on. Starts easily if driven periodically. If you own one of these cars, you should use a battery maintainer if you plan on letting it sit for more than 2 weeks between drives. 4) Engine: Runs very strong, does not smoke, and does not consume very much oil- I change the oil once per year, and add very little, if any, in between. There is a minor oil leak near the rear on the car, which I usually see only in the winter. A drop or two here and there, so I have chosen to ignore it. I adjusted the valves, replaced the plugs, the distributor cap, and rotor about 2 years ago (in last 2000 miles). The exhaust covers have been updated to turbo valve covers by the PO. The clutch was done after about 60K miles. 5) Brakes and suspension: All fine. Just bled the brakes. The pads and rotors are good. I replaced all 4 shocks, and re-bushed the front suspension a few years ago. 6) The targa top is in great shape, and had been professionally reconditioned by the PO. I am including a Carbrella top, which is nice to keep in the car and pop on the top if you want to leave the targa top at home, which I often did. 7) Etc: Has original books, tool kit, pump, and jack. I have done my best to give an honest description of the car. It has been wonderful to own, but I can't have two. I would welcome a PPI, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
