Vehicle Detail
This little Gremlin came to our house in 2002 from an estate in Oklahoma. I bought it because it was low mileage, and optioned the way I wanted:. 6 cylinder engine, automatic AND air conditioning. It had 1978 tags and just over 50,000 miles on it then. The story was the original owner drove it for 5 years, bought a 79 AMC Ambassador (also in the estate), and parked it in indoor storage, wher it sat for well over 20 years. This was to be my daughter's first car, so I went over it as follows: Brakes:: all new pads, drums turned, all 4 new wheel cylinders, all new brake hoses, and new master cylinder. New tires and alignment.New windshield.New molded floor carpet, mats, and I recovered the rear seat back and rear floor area with matching carpet.Pioneer premium 4 speaker sound system w/ power antenna. ( A girl's gotta have tunes!) All new coolant system hoses, radiator tested and flushed, and new coolant.Serviced A/C and Auto Trans. Changed all filters.Full tune-up and carb kit.Replaced faulty gas guage sender.4 years later, the front seat vinyl developed a split, so I had it professionally recovered. She drove it to High School and the local college without incident until 2007. As she grew, the novelty of driving an antique wore off, and Mama decided she needed to have something with airbags and anti-lock brakes. So, at that time, a Chevy Aveo came to our driveway, and the Gremlin went on jack stands in my heated shop. Now, six years later, she is a married professional woman, living in an apartment building, and it has become obvious that the Gremlin will never be put back in service for her. So last month I lowered it to the ground, added fresh gas, a new battery and fuel filter, and it started on the 3rd crank. It isn't currently tagged, but we drove it on the local back roads for about 10 miles, and it runs fine. THE BAD: (see photos) Body: The Gremlin suffered through 5 years in the high school and college parking lot wars, and has accumulated various door dings and scratches. The old guy that had it before us scraped up both rear quarters, (it looks like on a garage door?) and bent the passenger-side end of the rear bumper a little. A new replacement bumper that I bought but never got around to installing is included with purchase. The right rear area also has quite a bit of paint chipping where red primer is showing. The driver's front fender above the headlight is not dented, but is bent down about half an inch, and the plastic headlight surround below it is split on that end. It looks to me like someone sat/stood on it. Interior: the bottom edge of the driver's door panel has a tear where the seatbelt hook hangs. Not big, but it's there. The molded headliner needs dyed/painted. It's not sagging or torn, but the blue finish is wearing off. Mechanical:I noticed that the upper front wheel strut and lower radius arm rubber doughnuts are starting to chunk apart. They need replaced and then wheels realigned. The A/C needs charged. It blows cool, but not cold like it was when I parked it. THE GOOD: EVERYTHING works! The BEST thing about this car is the INTERIOR: The new carpeting and the new front seat cover are really nice, and plusher than stock. The dash is not split or warped, Including the full-width plastic subdash/storage tray assembly that is part of the air conditioner option, The gauges, switches, blowers, and heater/ defrost/ A/C controls are all in perfect shape. (I especially like the air conditioner control panel that says " HOT-COLD -DESERT ONLY!" Man, you have to be scorched to use that last setting! Ha!) The custom Pioneer stereo Kicks Ear! POWER: AMC had a 304 V8 option in these cars, but after driving this one, I don't see why... In a light weight little car like this, that 232 (3.8 liter) six REALLY GOES when you mash the pedal! Power steering, but not power brakes.. NO RUST to speak of. All those years in storage have preserved the body..A little discoloration on the rocker panels, but that's about it. EXTRA PARTS: included are a new old-stock bumper, a chrome rear roof air spoiler, a set of chrome windshield trim, and a full set of 2 @ Gremlin icon-figures and Gremlin script that I never got around to putting on, a spare tire with original vinyl cover, lug wrench, jack, and a manual. I have made the effort to honestly and accurately describe the condition of this vehicle. To make an appointment to inspect the Gremlin, or if you have additional questions, please use the ebay form, or call me at 785/564-9076. TERMS: Pay in full, or minimum $500 down within a week of auction's end. Balance due upon pickup. Cash or Paypal only. I will store it indoors for free till the end of the year, then $1 per day thereafter.Pickup, or make your own shipping arrangements. I am willing to help you or your carrier load it. Located approximately 100 miles West of Kansas City. The Gremlin is roadworthy, but not tagged or insured. (Gremlin comes with clear Kansas title, no liens, all property taxes paid current) Of course, this sale is as-is, where-is. No warranty expressed or implied. SO... This is a car that is ready to enjoy as an inexpensive commuter as it is. Or with a little body clean-up and repaint, and some engine detailing, it would present nicely at local cruise nights and car shows. Gremlins are a piece of Americana. Nearly everybody loves them. Now's your chance to own a good one! Bid it up! Thanks for looking! On Nov-23-12 at 12:34:06 PST, seller added the following information: ***This is an afterthought to the question about driving the Gremlin 700 miles to get it home. Please read entire entry below. This car still has the original mechanical contact points type ignition system, and as most of us geezers know, that although running smoothly now, those points can deteriorate and start misfireing relatively quickly. I always used to, and I would advise anyone to carry a spare set and the correct feeler gauge on a long trip. They only cost about $10.
